Point Lay, Alaska and the Walrus
Since 2007, walrus have been hauling out on shore near the Native Village of Point Lay. Point Lay is located in Northwestern Alaska on the shore of the Chukchi Sea. Media and public interest heightens when walruses haul out. Walrus are easily disturbed when on shore and stampede into the water, killing small, young animals.
The Native Village of Point Lay works to protect walrus from human-caused disturbance. Tribal Council President Leo Ferreira III asks the reporters, filmmakers, photographers, and other interested parties to respect the Native Village of Point Lay. He asks that we consider the impact visitors have on the village and the walrus.
Youth at Point Lay Kali School contributed images to this short film.

Pride. Strength, Courage, and Diversity in the National Park Service in Alaska - Part 3
Part 3 of a series of 3 videos created by the Alaska National Park Service.
During specific months of the year, our Nation recognizes, celebrates, and honors the rich diversity of our people. Denali National Park Ranger, Timothy Rains, proposed an idea to celebrate the June observance of Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Americans. He was inspired by the It Gets Better project video in which LGBT DOI employees support and reassure LGBT youth by providing stories of their own early struggles and encouragement that it does indeed get better. Tim wanted to produce a video where he'd share the story about his experience working for the National Park Service and how it helped him make peace with his identity, as well as provide an opportunity for fellow LGBT employees to share their stories as well.
Tim described the response to his project idea as quick and supportive from both his supervisor, Ingrid Nixon, Chief Interpretation and Superintendent, Paul Anderson. From that point, the Regional Office took this small flicker of an idea and gave it what it needed to flourish. For the first time in Alaska, ...they provided a way for those of us working in the remote areas of the state an opportunity to connect and create that strong sense of community through a shared goal...
In discussions with the Alaska Regional Office, ...they quickly realized this project was larger than the story I wanted to tell... Tim said. Within just a couple of days of the project announcement, Tim received 13 volunteers from several parks across the state. During pre- and post-production dialogues, several of the employees expressed what it meant to participate in the project. Their narrations are positive, encouraging and hopeful, yet some admit feelings of caution.

Alaska Dalton Highway Storm 3/19/2016
High winds, low visibility. This video was taken between Coldfoot Alaska and Yukon Crossing. Dangerous driving conditions. I wouldn't normally film while driving, but we were barely at a crawl. I got stranded on the road several hours after this video was taken, and wasn't able to get moving again until the plows made it to me at around 8:30am the next day. Luckily I had warm gear and brought extra fuel. I had a range of 20 miles when the plow got to me. I could barely keep the car running because the blowing snow had gotten packed into all areas under my car and in the engine compartment, including my air intake. I had multiple electrical faults, and my transmission cooling lines were crushed. It was very much like when water freezes in a crack in a rock, and breaks it apart. My serpentine belt was making a lot of noise because it was close to snapping. Walked away from the whole thing with a rough running car and a little frost nip on my fingers and toes. Happy to have made it. If you travel the dalton highway in winter, make sure you have plenty of warm gear, extra fuel, and a CB radio to communicate with other drivers. Always yield to trucks, and communicate with them when necessary. They know the road, and if they give you advice, it's probably in your best interest to follow it.
