Mount EVANS Colorado | #1 Thing to do in Denver
Mount Evans is the #1 thing to do in and around Denver, Colorado according to TripAdvisor. And for good reason, not only do you get there by way of North America's highest paved road but along the way, you will discover stunning Echo Lake along with many vistas, hikes, wildlife such as mountain goats, and countless photo-ops.
In our family vlog we are not only hiking up to the top of the infamous Colorado 14er mountain but are also going to find mountain goats and their kids and visit the Castle in the Sky which used to be the world's highest structure!
This is a great thing to do for the whole family as a summer day trip to escape the heat of The Foothills and to get to see a totally different side of Colorado. If you're out of town, make sure to give yourself a few days to get used to the general altitude of CO before endeavoring on this 14er. Also, make sure to bring and drink plenty of water!
The Meyer–Womble Observatory which used to be the highest optical/infrared observatory in the world until 2001, can be seen from the top. It is run by the University of Denver but is currently being decommissioned due to a lack of funding and interest.

Scary! 14260 feet Mt Evans Colorado Drive 9 of 17 DOWN Compare with Pikes Peak
Highest auto road in the USA - Mount Evans Colorado. Prettier than Pikes Peak and NO DUST to spoil the tundra. However, most people will find that it is scarier to drive.
Neighboring towns: Georgetown, Silver Plume, Idaho Springs, Golden, Brookvale, Highland Park, Evergreen, Conifer
One of the three fourteeners visible from Denver, Mount Evans dominates the mountainous horizon west of the city. Its great sculpted eastern face greets the dawn each day, capturing the morning light. Much of the wilderness lies above timberline, and place names such as Sawtooth, Frozen Lake, and Abyss Lake offer a hint of the rugged glacial terrain that characterizes the area.
Crawling up into the wilderness, but outside the circuitous boundary, a paved road runs to the top of Mount Evans, the highest paved road in America. Abyss Lake, surrounded by fabulous scenery, rests in a rock-rimmed gorge at 12,550 feet in the heart of the wilderness. You can reach it by hiking seven strenuous miles (one way) up a glacier-carved valley.
The area's 14,000 foot peaks and proximity to Denver combine with the summit road to draw large numbers of visitors. Nevertheless, the Mount Evans Wilderness contains notable biological features, harboring not only alpine tundra, but arctic tundra as well. This is one of the few places south of the Arctic Circle, where such tundra is found. It differs from alpine tundra by virtue of its moisture, as it contains countless small pools of water. In contrast, most tundra in Colorado is dry and brittle once uncovered by snow. The Mount Goliath Natural area contains another of the region's unusual features - a prime stand of bristlecone pine. These gnarled elders of the forest often live 1,500 to 2,000 years, growing at infinitesimal rates. The trees' twisted and contorted trunks offer stark evidence of their bitter fight for survival against the elements.
Two species of animals less frequently observed elsewhere have become popular attractions here. A herd of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep live around Mount Evans, and mountain goats are frequently seen from the summit road. The vast expanses of tundra offer visitors numerous opportunities to spy more common critters, including ptarmigan and yellow-bellied marmots.
Mount Evans Scenic Byway Colorado Driving Up
Recorded on July 5th 2018 .
A Drive Up Mount Evans in Colorado
Mount Evans Road (CO-5), 60 miles west of Denver, is said to be the highest paved road in North America. It climbs 7,000 feet in just 28 miles, reaching an altitude of 14,130 feet. Driving this narrow road without guard rails in a gusty wind was a bit scary – and exhilarating! The view from up there was breathtaking and worth the occasional sweaty palm and white knuckle.

Mount Evans is a mountain in the Front Range region of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado. It is one of 54 fourteeners (mountains with peaks over 14,000 feet (4,300 m)) in Colorado, and the closest fourteener to Denver. It is often compared to Pikes Peak - another Front Range fourteener - which it exceeds in elevation by 154 ft (50 m).
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline and can be seen as far south as Monument Hill at the Douglas-El Paso county line (79 miles (127 km) south) and as far north as Boulder (44 miles (71 km) north), and points east of Strasburg (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.

Mount Evans Colorado
After getting into Denver and seeing Golden, our first big site seeing adventure was Mount Evans, one of the big 14's! This is a spectacular drive up to the top, then a short hiking trail to the peak. We really loved seeing this spot and would do it again.

Mount Evans is the road into the sky. Drive from 8,700 feet at Idaho Spring where you turn off Interstate 70 to 14,240 feet to the summit, and you will pass through 3 life zones, passing ancient trees, lakes and forest to the land above timberline. At the turn of the last century, Colorado Springs and Denver were in a race for the hearts and minds (not to mention dollars) of the eastern tourist. In 1888, the Cascade and Pikes Peak Toll Road Company completed a 16-mile road up the north side of Pikes Peak. This became a major tourist attraction, drawing tourists away from Denver Area. Not to be outdone, Denver's Mayor Peer proposed that a road be constructed to the top of Mount Evans. In 1917, he procured state funds to build the road. It was completed in 1927.
During the summers of 1941 and 1942, Denver Mountain Parks built the Crest House (also known as Summit House). It quickly became a favorite destination of Coloradans and tourists. Containing both a restaurant and a gift shop, one could enjoy superb food and buy Mount Evans souvenirs while enjoying a panoramic view of Denver and the eastern plains. Unfortunately, it burned on September 1, 1979 and was not rebuilt, but the rock foundation and wall remain as an observation platform and a windbreak for mountain travelers.
Mount Evans Scenic Byway Thrill Drive: Highest Paved Road in North America
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway in Colorado. At an altitude of 14,240 feet (4340 meters), it is one of the highest peaks in the Rocky Mountain range. It is currently the highest paved road in North America. The temperature is dramatically reduced at the top. It can be 80 °F at the bottom and 40 °F at the top. So make sure you pack proper gears to keep you warm. It's too windy at the top and hence windchill can go below 30 °F. The top 5 miles are open from May to Sept season only. You'll see mountain goats, crazy cyclists and runners on the way :)

Description
Mt Evans Colorado, Annual Gold Aspen Drive
Today was the 19th year in a row that I have driven this amazing route at the base of Mt. Evans, Colorado, to enjoy the changing colors of the aspen trees. I'm listening to a recording of David Foster's Symphony Sessions, which you can hear on my car stereo. You may want to turn up the volume to get a better feel for how perfect the music is for this drive. I am so fortunate to live in such a beautiful state!

Mount Evans is the highest summit of the Chicago Peaks in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains of North America. The prominent 14,271-foot (4350 m) fourteener is located in the Mount Evans Wilderness, 13.4 miles (21.6 km) southwest by south (bearing 214°) of the City of Idaho Springs in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States, on the drainage divide between Arapaho National Forest and Pike National Forest.
The peak is one of the characteristic Front Range peaks, dominating the western skyline of the Great Plains along with Pikes Peak, Longs Peak, and nearby Mount Bierstadt. Mount Evans can be seen from over 100 miles away to the east, and many miles in other directions. Mount Evans dominates the Denver Metropolitan Area skyline, rising over 9,000 feet (2,700 m) above the area. Mount Evans can be seen from points south of Castle Rock, up to (65 miles (105 km) south) and as far north as Fort Collins (95 miles (153 km) north), and from areas near Limon (105 miles (169 km) east). In the early days of Colorado tourism, Mount Evans and Denver were often in competition with Pikes Peak and Colorado Springs.
Echo Lake Park is a park located along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway about 33.5 mi (54 km) west of Denver, Colorado. The park provides a stone shelter with picnic tables and barbecue grills on one end of the lake, and the 1926 Echo Lake Lodge (gift shop and restaurant service only) and an Arapaho National Forest campground are found at the other. Access to backpacking trails, including the Chicago Lakes trail and Lincoln Lakes trail, can be found adjacent to the lake. The park is part of the Denver Mountain Parks system.
