Chipmunk Eats Buds in Muir Woods National Monument, Mill Valley, California
Chipmunks are fast little striped squirrels. All are found in America with the exception of the Siberian chipmunk. In this example the chipmunk is feeding on low-hanging plant buds. The chipmunk is an omnivore.

Short video of Muir Woods and Mount Tamalpais State Park.
Muir Woods National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service in Marin County, California, 12 miles north of San Francisco and part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The Monument is an old-growth coastal redwood forest. Due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the forest is regularly shrouded in coastal fogs, contributing to a wet environment that encourages vigorous plant growth.
Mount Tamalpais State Park is a California state park, located in Marin County, California. The primary feature of the park is the 2,571 foot Mount Tamalpais. The park contains mostly redwood and oak forests. The mountain itself covers around 25,000 acres. There are about 60 miles of hiking trails, which are connected to a larger, 200 mile network of trails in neighboring public lands. Muir Woods National Monument is surrounded by the state park. From the peak of the mountain, visitors can see up to 25 miles, in a view that encompasses San Francisco, most of the North and East Bay, and the Farallon Islands. Occasionally, the Sierra Nevadas are visible, 125 miles away.

Giant Redwoods at Muir Woods National Monument
Muir Woods National Monument in Mill Valley California
a small part of this monument is old growth redwoods of which there are very few in the San Francisco Bay Area.
To give you an idea where we are, the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco are just a couple miles south (left) and west of us as we cross the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge in the start of the video. SF is a few miles south of Muir Woods.
These are Coastal Redwoods, not Giant Sequoias. While these trees can be grown in many environments, the Sequoias are only found naturally on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Coastal Redwoods are found along the Northern California coast and slightly into Oregon. The Redwoods grow even taller than the Sequoias but are not quite as thick and massive, and there are differences in the bark and needles as well. Redwoods live to nearly 2000 years, Sequoias live to 3,500!
Muir Woods is a wonderful escape from the City but you do have to prepare for crowds. The Park Service has begun restricting parking along the road and is running a shuttle service during the summer. The shuttle is convenient but not free. Entry is also $7 per person, we use an annual pass. If you arrive before 8 am or close to closing time (sunset) entry is free. There are many other trails and parklands in the area from Mt Tamalpais forest trails to grassy hills and also the coast a few miles west...

Muir Woods National Monument is part of California’s Golden Gate National Recreation Area, north of San Francisco. It’s known for its towering old-growth redwood trees. Trails wind among the trees to Cathedral Grove and Bohemian Grove, and along Redwood Creek. The Ben Johnson and Dipsea trails climb a hillside for views of the treetops, the Pacific Ocean and Mount Tamalpais in adjacent Mount Tamalpais State Park.

Muir Woods California Redwood Trees
Muir Woods National Monument
Mill Valley, California, 94941-2696
When John Muir learned that William and Elizabeth Kent were naming a redwood forest near San Francisco in his honor, he declared, This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world. The couple had purchased the land to preserve its beauty and restful wilderness; and in 1908, they donated it to the federal governent to protect it from destruction.
