Murdoch’s Bathhouse, MMVlog #41
Murdoch's Bathhouse is one of Galveston's most historic locations. Originally built in the late 1800's, the wood structure was constructed directly on the sand. Without the protection of a Seawall , the 1900 storm destroyed the bathhouse.
Although the structure was rebuilt in 1901, the storms of 1909, 1915, and 2008 were so violent, that reconstruction was required after each.
Bathhouses such as Murdoch's, which were located on the shore, rented bathing suits and provided showers for the Island visitors. When Murdoch's reopened in 1910, it had 542 rooms, 251 for women and 291 for men. The cost at the time to rent the bathroom services were .25c.
In 1910, Mr. William J. Guyette Sr. opened Guyette Gift Shop inside Murdoch's. He knew that with so many visitors coming to Galveston Island, a shop that offered these visitors souvenirs, shells and trinkets, would be a great idea.
That same year, Gaido's Seafood restaurant was also opened inside Murdoch's Bathhouse. Both establishments are still thriving today and are considered Galveston institutions.
Mr. Guyette's son, William J. Guyette Jr. , took over operations of the gift shop after serving five years in the U.S. Army during World War II. With Mr. Guyette Sr. living just across the street at the Moody House, the 2nd generation would continue the daily operations of Guyette Gift Shop.
In 1961, Hurricane Carla destroyed the bath house yet again. Reconstruction this time replaced the grander bathhouse with the two oblong wood structures, built several steps above the seawall and carried out over the Gulf of Mexico on wood pilings.
In 1974, Mr. William J. Guyette Jr.'s son-in-law, James W. Little, took over operations of Guyette Gift Shops. Although Mr. Guyette still remained active in the shops, Mr. James Little, the 3rd generation, had now begun to take charge.
In 1983, Hurricane Alicia hit Galveston Island. This storm required the pier to have minor repairs.
In 2005, the family connected the existing piers with a breezeway and porch overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Since the State of Texas, will not allow anymore piers to be built, it stands on some of the original piling that once held Murdoch's Bathhouse.
In 2008, Hurricane Ike destroyed Murdochs, and in 2009, miraculously, a brand new, sparkling Murdochs returned in its place.
Pleasure Pier, Galveston TX. Aereal View
Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier is a pleasure pier in Galveston, Texas, United States. Opened in Summer 2012, it has 1 roller coaster, 15 rides, carnival games and souvenir shops.
The new Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier was built 1,130 feet (340 m) out over the Gulf of Mexico waters. It had its soft opening on May 25, 2012.
The new pier complex is located where the original Pleasure Pier stood from 1943 until 1961, when it was destroyed by Hurricane Carla. The original Pleasure Pier featured rides, an arcade, an aquarium, concessions, a large ball room, named the Marine Ballroom, and fishing at the end of the pier. It was also the site of the USS Flagship Hotel, an over-the-water hotel built in 1965 that was demolished after Hurricane Ike in 2008.
Before the renovation there had been almost no maintenance in over 70 years, resulting in the pier having exposed reinforcing steel with accelerated corrosion and concrete spalling at piles, beams, joists, and reflective overhead flat plates. Because of this, extensive structural concrete restoration was needed. Repairs were eventually completed using shotcrete struck and finished in alignment with pre-existing materials making up the pier.

Galveston Island is Booming!
Hurricane Ike broadsided Galveston Island on September 13, 2008. Damage was extensive. Six years later, Galveston is booming. Businesses have re-built and new businesses have arrived. People are excited about the entertainment, food and fun offered on the Island. There are the well known tourist haunts such as Moody Gardens and Bishop's Palace, but how about learning some new island venues. The Lone Star Flight Museum is a thrill. I never knew it was there until Justine and I decided to video Galveston.Once we were there, she couldn't get me to leave! The Grand 1984 Opera House will take your breath away. I've had the privilege of visiting opera houses throughout the world. This one ranks among the top five. You might think, why would I want to see old railroad cars? But, trust me, visit The Galveston Railroad Museum. You'll have a blast walking in and out of the cars and locomotives. The model railroads are spectacular.
The Hotel Galvez, whether you stay there or not, is a step back into a time of luxury and grace. In the basement is a museum of the history of the Hotel Galvez as well as Galveston Island.
Stop in at La Kings on The Strand and watch them make salt water taffy while you lick on a hand dipped ice cream cone. Stroll around Murdochs Pier for souvenirs and relax watching the waves crash onto the beach.
There is so much to do on the island and everyone will give you a warm welcome.

Texas A&M Class Ring Lost at Pirates Beach in Galveston, Texas
Texas A&M Class Ring Lost at Pirates Beach in Galveston, Texas
I was contacted by Kathleen a resident of Bryan, Texas who was looking for someone to help her find her lost Texas A&M Class Ring…
Kathleen reported she had been vacationing on Pirates Beach in Galveston, Texas when she had the mis-fortune of losing her prized possession, her Texas A&M Class Ring in the Gulf of Mexico.
Kathleen reported she had been throwing a football with friends when her ring flew off her finger and landed in knee deep water.
Kathleen reported she searched for her lost in the water but had no success at finding her ring…
Kathleen said upon returning home to Bryan, Texas she searched the internet to see if anyone could possibly go back and search for her lost ring…Kathleen said her search took her to Houston Metal Detecting Services – The Ring Finders (Houston, Texas)
Kathleen said, it was at that moment she felt like their might be some hope!
Kathleen was able to send some photographs with some very specific land marks to get us back to the location the beach where she lost her ring, always the deciding factor in pursing recoveries on the beach.
Based on the location and recovery details, I knew this would again be a two-man effort minimal…I reached out to a good friend Carl Sedita and laid out the details.
After looking over all of the details, we made the trip down to Pirates Beach, to take back Kathleen’s lost ring!
