10th July 1940: The Vichy government established in France
France declared war against Germany on 3 September, two days after the Nazi invasion of Poland. Despite being at war, however, the two countries only experienced minor skirmishes in early September.
This period of little military action, which became known as the Phoney War, was followed 8 months later by a full-scale German invasion of France that began on 10 May. The French were overwhelmed by the Nazi war machine, and were soon forced to decide whether to continue to fight while the government relocated to North Africa, or remain in France and seek an armistice.
Eventually the Cabinet agreed to seek an armistice, which was signed on 22 June in Compiègne Forest. This had been the location for the November 1918 armistice that Germany had signed to end the Great War, and was specifically chosen by Hitler as a form of revenge. The railway carriage in which the 1918 ceasefire had been agreed was even brought from a museum to host the discussions.
The French decision to sign an armistice led to the resignation of Prime Minister Paul Reynaud, who was replaced by First World War hero Marshal Philippe Pétain. Two-fifths of France had been designated ‘unoccupied’ under the terms of the armistice, and its administrative centre lay in the city of Vichy. However, the government nominally ruled the German-occupied areas as well.
The French State officially collaborated with Nazi Germany from 30 October, when Pétain announced the policy in a radio broadcast. The new Provisional Government of the French Republic was established on 3 June 1944 following the Allied liberation.

Vichy is a city in central France. It’s known for its spas and eclectic architecture. The Eglise Saint-Blaise church connects to the Notre-Dame-des-Malades, an art deco church featuring frescoes and stained glass. Recitals and ballets are held at the art nouveau–style Vichy Opera House. The Musée Surréaliste François Boucheix showcases the work of this surrealist artist. Trails cross the riverside Napoleon III Park.

A Walk Around Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation, Paris
The Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation (English: Memorial to the Martyrs of the Deportation) is a memorial to the 200,000 people who were deported from Vichy France to the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. It is located in Paris, France on the site of a former morgue, underground behind Notre Dame on Île de la Cité. It was designed by French modernist architect Georges-Henri Pingusson and was inaugurated by Charles de Gaulle in 1962.
Mémorial des Martyrs de la Déportation, located in Paris, France, is a memorial to the more than 200,000 people who were deported from Vichy France to the Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Designed by French architect, writer, teacher, and town planner Georges-Henri Pingusson (1894–1978), the memorial was inaugurated by then-President Charles de Gaulle on April 12, 1962. In the year of its opening, a brochure produced by the French survivors' group Reseau de souvenir described the memorial as a crypt, hollowed out of the sacred isle, the cradle of our nation, which incarnates the soul of France -- a place where its spirit dwells.
The memorial is shaped like a ship's prow; the crypt is accessible by two staircases and a lowered square protected by a metal portcullis. The crypt leads to a hexagonal rotunda that includes two chapels containing earth and bones from concentration camps. The walls display literary excerpts. Pingusson intended that its long and narrow subterranean space convey a feeling of claustrophobia. The memorial's entrance is narrow, marked by two concrete blocks. Inside is the tomb of an unknown deportee who was killed at the camp in Neustadt. Along both walls of the narrow, dimly lit chamber are 200,000 glass crystals with light shining through, meant to symbolize each of the deportees who died in the concentration camps; at the end of the tunnel is a single bright light. Ashes from the camps, contained within urns, are positioned at both lateral ends. Both ends of the chamber have small rooms that seem to depict prison cells. Opposite the entrance is a stark iron gate overlooking the Seine at the tip of the Île de la Cité.
The memorial is open daily from 10am to 5pm from October through March, and from 10am to 7pm from April through September. According to Time Out Paris, an annual Day of Remembrance ceremony is hosted at the memorial on the last Sunday of April.

In this open day lecture, Julian Jackson, Head of History at Queen Mary, University of London explores the French occupation by the Nazis and the choices they were faced with; Resistance or collaboration? Key areas covered are: la Resistance, Vichy France, General de Gaulle , Marechal Petain, and their link to modern day France.
L'Opéra de Vichy : un lieu chargé d'histoire
L'Opéra de Vichy voit le jour sous la forme du Grand Casino de Vichy en 1865. De style Art Nouveau, il est lœuvre de l'architecte Charles Badger, et décoré par le peintre polonais Léon Rudnicki. Doté d'une capacité de 1482 sièges, la voûte de la coupole du dôme est ornée de visages d'artistes : Sarah Bernhardt, Réjane, Coquelin, Cléo de Mérode, Mounet-Sully. Les ferronneries, les trois portes, balustrades et rampes, sont d'Émile Robert. Il fut le théâtre le 10 juillet 1940, de la révolte de 80 parlementaires qui refusèrent les pleins pouvoirs au Maréchal Pétain.
Accompagnés de Fabien Noble, Directeur du Musée de l'Opéra de Vichy, nos jeunes reporters des Balkans découvrent ce lieu chargé d'histoire.

In the play, men are rounded up into a detention center to be inspected for jewish background. Those who are undesired according to Nazism are sent to the concentration camps by trains. The play ended off with Von Berg giving Leduc the pass so he can escape. This video follows what we believe happens after.

The battle of France is very often misunderstood, be it intentionally or through many myths through the years. France endured quite a bit, and it was a variety of reasons for their defeat. Primarily tactically rather than by morale or poor skill in fighting. Often times the fighting forces of France during WW2 are heavily disrespected. Which is a shame. As well as what she went through during the war.
This video serves to give that respect, and pay that respect it so deserved. It was, after all, the bravery of the French military which provided security for the Dunkirk evacuation to hold the Germans. If not done, then the entire annihilation of the French and British forces would have occurred.
