A Visit to Rotterdam's Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
Known for its modern and experimental architecture, a highlight of the Rotterdam's arts scene is the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France, but retained British citizenship. He was the most consistent of the Impressionists in his dedication to painting landscape en plein air (i.e., outdoors). He deviated into figure painting only rarely and, unlike Renoir and Pissarro, found that Impressionism fulfilled his artistic needs.
Sisley was born in Paris to affluent British parents. His father, William Sisley, was in the silk business, and his mother, Felicia Sell, was a cultivated music connoisseur.
In 1857, at the age of 18, Sisley was sent to London to study for a career in business, but he abandoned it after four years and returned to Paris in 1861. From 1862, he studied at the Paris École des Beaux-Arts within the atelier of Swiss artist Marc-Charles-Gabriel Gleyre, where he became acquainted with Frédéric Bazille, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Together they would paint landscapes en plein air rather than in the studio, in order to capture the transient effects of sunlight realistically. This approach, innovative at the time, resulted in paintings more colourful and more broadly painted than the public was accustomed to seeing. Consequently, Sisley and his friends initially had few opportunities to exhibit or sell their work. Their works were usually rejected by the jury of the most important art exhibition in France, the annual Salon. During the 1860s, though, Sisley was in a better financial position than some of his fellow artists, as he received an allowance from his father.
In 1866, Sisley began a relationship with Eugénie Lesouezec (1834–1898; also known as Marie Lescouezec), a Breton living in Paris. The couple had two children: son Pierre (born 1867) and daughter Jeanne (1869). At the time, Sisley lived not far from Avenue de Clichy and the Café Guerbois, the gathering-place of many Parisian painters.
In 1868, his paintings were accepted at the Salon, but the exhibition did not bring him financial or critical success; nor did subsequent exhibitions.
In 1870, the Franco-Prussian War began; as a result, Sisley's father's business failed, and the painter's sole means of support became the sale of his works. For the remainder of his life he would live in poverty, as his paintings did not rise significantly in monetary value until after his death. Occasionally, however, Sisley would be backed by patrons, and this allowed him, among other things, to make a few brief trips to Britain.
The first of these occurred in 1874, after the first independent Impressionist exhibition. The result of a few months spent near London was a series of nearly twenty paintings of the Upper Thames near Molesey, which was later described by art historian Kenneth Clark as a perfect moment of Impressionism.
Until 1880, Sisley lived and worked in the country west of Paris; then he and his family moved to a small village near Moret-sur-Loing, close to the forest of Fontainebleau, where the painters of the Barbizon school had worked earlier in the century. Here, as art historian Anne Poulet has said, the gentle landscapes with their constantly changing atmosphere were perfectly attuned to his talents. Unlike Monet, he never sought the drama of the rampaging ocean or the brilliantly colored scenery of the Côte d'Azur.
In 1881, Sisley made a second brief voyage to Great Britain.
He died on 29 January 1899 of throat cancer in Moret-sur-Loing at the age of 59, a few months after the death of his wife. His body was buried at Moret-sur-Loing Cemetery.

Starting out at the Rotterdam train station, which is where you would probably be arriving when you come to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands. There's an excellent Tourist Information counter here where you can get a lot of good advice about the main sites you want to see in your visit.
The tram station out front is quite active with eight different tramlines running through it. You'll quickly reach anywhere in town from the central station.
There are very modern buildings in Rotterdam, and they are well planned with apartments in the downtown area and some parks and you've got the idyllic waterfront with the boat traffic and the apartments around it.
There is a culture history museum. There's an excellent art museum. And that's where we are heading soon in the program, show you a couple of fine museums.
First we walk along Westersingel canal, with parks along the banks of the canal, you've got some ducks quacking by and also it's an outdoor sculpture garden with fountains and benches and a wide promenade that makes for very easy and pleasant walking.
Then we visit a great museum, Boymans van Beuningen, which is one of the major art museums in the Netherlands, an amazing collection that spans from the Renaissance and earlier right up through modern design.
Then, the museum we are heading for next is all about people and culture history called the World Museum and English, or in Dutch, the name is Wereldmuseum.
The city population is 640,000 making it second largest after Amsterdam, but if you include the greater metropolitan area extending to the Hague, population totals 2.5 million. Rotterdam has got 38 skyscrapers and 352 high-rises with many more skyscrapers coming up soon.
There are nine different tramlines operating in Rotterdam, making this a very convenient way to get around, and they are thoroughly modernized. Although, in their beginnings, they were founded in 1878 as horse-drawn trams. In 1904 the first electric trams began service and gradually the horse wagons were phased out. By 1906 there was already five electric tramlines operating and then four more lines began in the next four years. The last horse cars stopped running by 1925. The maximum extent of Rotterdam's tramway network was 25 lines, which was reached in 1930.
Throughout the main cities of Europe, there has been a similar history of trams developing from horse to electric, and then declining, and in recent years, a resurgence in popularity of the system. Currently 40 different Dutch cities have operating tram systems, but only two have metros, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is druk bezig met de plannen voor het nieuwe publiek toegankelijke kunstdepot, naast het museum. Architectenbureau MVRDV ontwierp hiervoor een spiegelende kom die het groen van het Museumpark laat schitteren. 3D Capacity plaatste het ontwerp vast in 3D op de toekomstige locatie en zoomt vanaf de verschillende straten in op het gebouw.
Speciale rondleiding Boijmans voor dementerenden
Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam is begonnen met het geven van rondleidingen aan mensen met beginnende dementie. Dinsdag was een groep uit Oud-Beijerland te gast.Medewerkers van het museum willen deze bezoekers op een speciale manier kennis laten maken met het museum. ''Tijdens de groepsrondleiding Onvergetelijk Boijmans bekijken deelnemers kunstwerken in het museum in een ontspannen en positieve sfeer. Ze gaan met elkaar in gesprek over wat ze zien en laten zich inspireren middels creatieve opdrachten'', aldus het museum.De rondleidingen worden alleen op aanvraag gegeven door Boijmans van Beuningen.

Eerste spiegels geplaatst op depotgebouw Boijmans
De eerste spiegelpanelen op het museumdepot van Boijmans van Beuningen zijn aangebracht. Het gebouw, in de vorm van een reusachtige soepkom, wordt rondom helemaal van spiegelglas. In totaal moeten de komende maanden 1700 panelen worden bevestigd.Architect Winny Maas is tevreden over het effect: "Het wordt heel mooi. Ik kan me goed voorstellen hoe dat er straks uitziet als je hier in een ligstoel in het park ligt met een biertje in je hand en de hele stad zich in het depot weerspiegelt."Aan de kant van het Erasmus MC, waar de afdeling psychiatrie zit, komen speciale filters over de spiegels, op nadrukkelijke wens van het ziekenhuis zelf. "Dan zie je niet de spiegeling, maar een soort wolk," legt museumdirecteur Sjarel Ex uit.Een voorbijgangster reageert minder enthousiast: "Het zijn wel heel veel spiegels. Ik ben benieuwd hoe dat er straks uitziet. Het is nogal een gebouw." 'Levenslang' naar het museumDe spiegelplaten kunnen ook 'geadopteerd' worden, voor 1000 euro per stuk. In ruil daarvoor kun je heel je leven lang gratis naar het museum. 700 van de 1700 spiegels zijn inmiddels 'verkocht'. Het depot gaat in totaal 85 miljoen euro kosten, grotendeels betaald door particuliere geldschieters. In het gebouw, dat volledig toegankelijk wordt voor het publiek, wordt de complete collectie van Boijmans bewaard. Ook zijn er restauratieateliers en tentoonstellingsruimten. Bovenop het gebouw komt een 'bos' en een restaurant. Het depot moet in 2021 klaar zijn. Volgens Ex wordt het overigens geen dependance van het museum Boijmans van Beuningen, dat voor zeven jaar gesloten is vanwege een ingrijpende renovatie. "De topcollectie van Boijmans zal over de wereld gaan reizen. Misschien dat we af en toe werken tentoonstellen in het depot, maar dat is niet het uitgangspunt."

Op zaterdag 19 december opende Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen haar deuren speciaal voor deelnemers van de BankGiro Loterij.
Voor Wendy uit 's-Gravenhage was de avondopenstelling extra speciaal. Samen met een vriendin mocht zij in het museum overnachten, inclusief rondleiding na sluitingstijd én ontbijt.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam toont de hoogtepunten van 200 jaar vormgeving (tussen 1815 en 2015) in Nederland en België. De tentoonstelling presenteert de vijfhonderd objecten in chronologische volgorde, parallel aan elkaar. Ontdek zelf de verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen de twee buurlanden.
