Orang Asli Craft Museum Kuala Lumpur Malaysia | Tourism Malaysia
Orang Asli Craft Museum in Kuala Lumpur showcases the arts and handicrafts of the Orang Asli people, the aboriginal communities who dwell mostly in rural areas across the Malaysian Peninsula.
The museum explains how there are 18 different tribes of Orang Asli divided into 3 main groups, the Negrito, the Senai and the Proto Malay.
The Orang Asli are famed for their handicrafts, particularly the wood carving skills by the Mah Meri and Jah Hut tribes who like to carve masks and figures and these are highly valued by collectors.
In addition to statues and masks there are small Sepili figures used in the traditional medicine system of the Jah Hut, blowpipes and ornate bamboo containers for holding blowpipe darts, hunting and fishing traps, musical instruments, native clothing, pouches and containers made from screw pine, rattan baskets and trays, palm leaf ornaments and spiritual decorations and even coffins made from bamboo.
This is a small but very interesting museum with material that you won’t see elsewhere except perhaps in the other Orang Asli museum in Gombak. The quality of the carvings is very high.

The museum is situated in close proximity to the Perdana Lake Gardens and it provides an overview of Malaysian history and culture. Its facade comprises elements of traditional Malay and modern features. It was opened on 31 August 1963,[1] and it serves as a repository of Malaysia's rich cultural and historical heritage.
The National Museum is a three-storey structure 109.7 metres (359 ft 11 in) long and 15.1 metres (49 ft 6 in) wide, which is 37.6 metres (123 ft 4 in) high at the central point. The museum houses four main galleries allotted to ethnology and natural history. The displays range from free-standing tableaux showing cultural events like weddings, festivals and costumes; to traditional weapons, musical instruments, arts and crafts, ceramics, and flora and fauna.
The National Museum was established on the site of the former Selangor Museum.[1] It was built by the British and Selangor governments in 1898 following the formation of the Federated Malay States in 1896. On 10 March 1945, during the end of World War II, the right wing of the museum was bombed and destroyed by the US B-29 bomber, from the Allied Forces.[2] The museum's collection was then moved to the Perak Museum in Taiping.
After World War II, the left wing of Selangor Museum was still in use as a historical site. On the brink of the independence of the Federation of Malaya, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman conceived the idea to build a museum to house national historical and cultural treasures as well as specimens of flora and fauna. The old museum structure was completely demolished to make way for a new museum.
Construction began in 1959 and was complete in 1963. The National Museum was officially opened on 31 August 1963 by Tuanku Syed Putra Ibni al-Marhum Syed Hassan Jamalullal, the 3rd Yang di-Pertuan Agong.[3]
On 4 April 1996 the building was gazetted under the Antiquities Act 169/1976 as an ancient monument and historical site.

SUMMARY
=======
The Malay world or Malay realm (Malay: Dunia Melayu or Alam Melayu, Jawi: دنيا ملايو or عالم ملايو), is a concept or an expression that has been utilised by different authors and groups over time to denote several different notions, derived from varied interpretations of Malayness, either as a racial category, as a linguistic group or as a political-cultural group. The use of the term 'Malay' in much of the conceptualisation is largely based on the prevalent Malay cultural influence, manifested in particular through the spread of Malay language in Southeast Asia as observed by different colonial powers during the Age of Discovery.The concept in its broadest territorial stretch may apply to a region synonymous with Austronesia, homeland to the Austronesian peoples, that extends from Easter Island in the east to Madagascar in the west. Such description has its origin in the introduction of the term Malay race in the late 18th century that has been popularised by the orientalists to describe the Austronesian peoples. In a narrower sense, the Malay world has been used as a synonym for Malay sprachraum, referring to the Malay-speaking countries and territories of Southeast Asia, where different standards of Malay are the national languages or a variety of it is an important minority language. The term in this sense encompasses Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Southern Thailand, and is sometimes used interchangeably with the concepts of 'Malay Archipelago' and 'Nusantara'.Alternatively, modern scholars correct these extended notions of the Malay world, defining it as a political and cultural area instead. In this context, the Malay world is reduced to a region that is homeland to the Malay people, historically ruled by different Malay sultanates, where various Malay dialects and cultural values are predominant. This area includes the Malay Peninsula, the coastal areas of Sumatra and Borneo and the smaller islands in between.The most notable use of the concept was in the early 20th century, embraced in an irredentist fashion, by the Malay nationalists in the form of 'Greater Malaya' (Melayu Raya), as an aspiration for the natural or desired borders of a modern nation for the Malay race.
Malay culture has also had an impact on cultures outside of the traditional Malay world most notably in Sri Lanka and on the cuisine of Thailand. In Sri Lanka, Malay cultural influences from the Malay Peninsula and Indonesia have had a deep impact on many aspects of modern Sri Lankan culture. Malay culture has deeply influenced Sri Lankan cuisine with many dishes like sambal, dodol and kaha buth having their origins in the Malay archipelago. The Sri Lankan sarong, the Raban, the practice of making batik as well as the traditional use of the outrigger canoe among other things were introduced to Sri Lanka through Malay and Indonesian contact. In Thailand, the country's cuisine has absorbed Malay and Indonesian influences with Indonesian-origin dishes like satay being ubiquitous in the country.
