Turin - Italy
Turin is a major city as well as a business and cultural centre in northern Italy, capital of the Piedmont region, located mainly on the left bank of the Po River surrounded by the Alpine arch. The population of the city proper is 909,193 (November 2008) while the population of the urban area is estimated by Eurostat to be 1.7 million inhabitants; the Turin metropolitan area is estimated by OECD to have a population of 2.2 million.
Turin is a flourishing, industrious and cosmopolitan European city, which enjoys state-of-the-art technology and architectural developments. The city boasts a rich culture and history, and is known for its numerous art galleries, restaurants, churches, palaces, operahouses, piazzas, parks, gardens, theatres, libraries, museums and other venues. Turin is well-known for its baroque, rococo and neo-classical architecture. Much of the city's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant palazzi (such as Palazzo Madama), were built by Sicilian architect Filippo Juvarra, who modeled these buildings on the Baroque and classical style of Versailles. Examples of these French-themed edifices include the Royal Palace of Turin, the Palazzina di caccia of Stupinigi and the Basilica di Superga. Turin is sometimes called the cradle of Italian liberty, due to its having been the birthplace and home of notable politicians and people who contributed to the Risorgimento, such as Cavour. The city currently hosts some of Italy's best universities, colleges, academies, lycea and gymnasia, such as the Polytechnic University of Turin. Prestigious and important museums, such as the Museo Egizio[7] and the Mole Antonelliana are also found in the city. Turin's several monuments and sights make it one of the world's top 250 tourist destinations, and the tenth most visited city in Italy in 2008.
Turin used to be a major European political centre, being Italy's first capital city in 1861 and being home to the House of Savoy, Italy's royal family. Even though much of its political significance and importance had been lost by World War II, it became a major European crossroad for industry, commerce and trade, and currently is one of Italy's main industrial centres, being part of the famous industrial triangle, along with Milan and Genoa. Turin is ranked third, after Rome and Milan, for economic strength. With a GDP of $58 billion, Turin is the world's 78th richest city by purchasing power, and even though the city was unable to become a world city, unlike Milan or Rome, it was ranked by GaWC as economically efficient, along with Jerusalem, Genoa, Macau, Marseille, Liverpool, Strasbourg, Salt Lake City, Seville and Tijuana, to name a few.Turin is also home to much of the Italian automotive industry.
Turin is well known as the home of the Shroud of Turin, the football teams Juventus F.C. and Torino F.C., the headquarters of automobile manufacturers Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, and as host of the 2006 Winter Olympics. Several International Space Station modules, such as Harmony and Columbus, were also manufactured in Turin. It was the capital of the Duchy of Savoy from 1563, then of the Kingdom of Sardinia ruled by the Royal House of Savoy and finally the first capital of a unified Italy.
It is often referred to as the Capital of the Alps. Turin is also known as the Automobile Capital of Italy or the Detroit of Italy; in Italy it is also called [La] capitale Sabauda.

All the beauties of Piedmont are summarized and celebrated in its regional capital. Roman (the Porte Palatine remind its origins), then Romanesque, Baroque and up to modern days architecture. There aremore than 40museums hosting precious things, which are often unique specimens in Italy and abroad. The EgyptianMuseumis the second most important museum in the world after the one in Cairo. The Museo Nazionale del Cinema [NationalMuseumof Cinema] is one of a kind, with a vertical structure (3,200 sq. metres on 5 floors) in themagical setting of theMole Antonelliana that, with its audacious 167-metre height, is the symbol of this city in the world.
Turin is the European capital of Baroque, which marked the city's cultural flourishing (Palazzo Carignano, Piazza San Carlo - the city'smeeting point, the San Lorenzo and San Filippo churches) and characterizes its surroundings (the Royal Residences, the Reggia di Venaria, the Castello di Rivoli...); but the city is also Art Nouveau, the floral style that embellishes the city's elegant districts the villas under the hills and, above all, the cafés where the high life has been enjoyed since the 1800s. It was the capital of Italy, and today it is the city of contemporary art and design, where themost important architects in the world create cutting edge urban projects.
The Savoy monarchy was mainly warlike, but the use ofweaponswas alwaysmatched by a passion for art, theatre, music, parks and gardens. The court hosted architects, painters and people of letters; it organized superb parties and hunting events: exclusive leisure activities that became a point of reference for European aristocrats. There are 15 Savoy Residences -UNESCO WorldHeritage Sites - and they represent an important cultural route: five of themare in the city (Palazzo Reale, PalazzoMadama, Palazzo Carignano, Castello del Valentino and Villa della Regina), the others are in the surroundings, (e.g., the StupinigiHunting Lodge, the castles of Rivoli - hosting the importantMuseumof Contemporary Art, Moncalieri, Agliè and, of course, the Reggia di Venaria). The residences were completed around themiddle 18th Century and are also known as the delightful crown as they surround Turin like a ring.
There aremany facets that are the ingredients of its charm. Turin means museums, music, cinema, culture, art and spirit; but also antiques, bibliophily, and shopping. But Turin is also sweet - with its chocolate, pastries andmany other unique delicacies such as bicerin, cakes and candies - as well as savoury, with the traditional aperitif rite and typical recipes. The local cuisine has become a worldwide famous feature. The research for often unique ingredients, always natural, the creativity and ability of cooks, confectioners and chocolate makers are the basis of the local culture and passion for good food, which is represented by the many trattorias as well as luxury restaurants.

Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Museo Nazionale del Cinema
The National Museum of Cinema located in Turin, is an Italian motion picture museum, fitted out inside the Mole Antonelliana tower. It is operated by the Maria Adriana Prolo Foundation, and the core of its collection is the result of the work of the historian and collector Maria Adriana Prolo (it). It was housed in the Palazzo Chiablese. In 2008, with 532,196 visitors, it reached the thirteenth place among the most visited Italian museums.
The museum houses pre-cinematographic optical devices such as magic lanterns, earlier and current film technologies, stage items from early Italian movies and other memorabilia. Along the exhibition path of about 35.000 square feet (3.200 m2) on five levels, it is possible to visit some areas devoted to the different kinds of film crew, and in the main hall, fitted in the temple hall of the Mole (which was a building originally intended as a synagogue), a series of chapels representing several film genres.
The museum keeps a huge and growing collection of film posters, stocks, and a library: at present it includes 20,000 devices, paintings and printed artworks, more than 80,000 pictures, over 300,000 film posters, 12,000 movie reels and 26,000 books (as of February 2006). A movie screen located in the Massimo multiplex, near to the museum, is reserved to retrospectives and other museum initiatives. The museum hosts several film festivals, the major and most prestigious of them being the Torino Film Festival.
Inside the museum there is also a panoramic elevator (opened in 2000) with transparent glass walls, that cover its 75 meters ride in 59 seconds, in the single open space span of the building, without middle floors, up to the small temple which gives a 360 degrees panoramic view of the city. It is the museum with the biggest vertical extension of the world.
( Turin - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Turin . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Turin - Italy

Museo Automobile Torino
Vasileios Papaidis 2015 © All Rights Reserved
The Automobile Museum was set up in 1932 based on the idea of two pioneers of Italian motoring,Cesare Goria Gatti and Roberto Biscaretti di Ruffia (the first President of the Turin Automobile Club and one of the founders of the Fiat company), and is one of the oldest Automobile Museums in the world.
It was Carlo Biscaretti di Ruffia(Roberto’s son), a Turin aristocrat born in 1879, who attached his name permanently to the National Automobile Museum, since he was the one who conceived it, gathered together the initial collection, strove to bring it into being and worked his whole life to give it decent headquarters. Carlo Biscaretti was also its first President and on his death in September 1959, the Board of Directors passed a resolution to name the Museum after him; it was then formally opened on 3 November 1960.
This is the only National Museum of this kind in Italy, housed in the premises designed by the architect Amedeo Albertini, on the left bank of the Po river and a short distance from the Lingotto; it is one of the few buildings specially constructed to house a museum collection, and is also a rare example of modern architecture.
The Museum has one of the rarest and most interesting collections of its kind, with almost 200 original cars dating from the mid-19th century to the present day, and over eighty different makes of vehicle, from Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, Holland, Spain, Poland and the United States. In 2002 the Museum directors started to think about works to renew the structure and contents. Forty years had passed, and the Museum had by now become dated and obsolete, so that change was needed to make it more appealing.
The work of the examining board for the international competition to renew the Museum was concluded in summer 2005. Around fifty world-level architecture studios took part, and the winner was the group composed of the architect Cino Zucchi, the Recchi Engineering Srl company and the Proger SpA firm.
The winning design (which complied with the requirements as advertised, using a coherent approach that could reorganise the existing building and create new spaces to relate to the city), included the relationship between the quick visual perception from Corso Unità d’Italia and the defining of a more enclosed pedestrian area at the point where it joins Via Richelmy.
In common with many contemporary European examples, the strictly display functions will be supplemented by a set of complementary activities to make the Automobile Museum come alive at all times of day and evening, and become an element to lead the way in the urban renewal of the city’s southern quadrant.
Zucchi’s design will be enhanced with the displays by the Franco-Swiss set-designer Francois Confino.
The experience acquired by Francois Confino in other, similar projects (he designed the interior fittings for the Turin Cinema Museum), played a useful role in devising a brand-new concept that will place the Turin Museum at the cutting-edge in the field of the art of exhibiting motor cars. The guiding principle will be “the car observed as a creation of genius and of the human imagination”, to make people aware of, and appreciate the immense pool of talent, creativity, craftsmanship and entrepreneurial abilities that exist in Turin and in Piedmont.
In the new Museum, we will tell the story of the motor car, its transformation from a means of transport to an object of worship, from its origins right up to the contemporary evolution of creative thought. Through the evolution of the car, we will narrate the epoch-making times that society has experienced.
