Museum of the Rockies | Montana Dinosaur Trail
Museum of the Rockies is a Smithsonian Affiliate and recognized as one of the world’s finest research and history museums. The museum houses the most T. rex specimen anywhere in the world. Notable exhibits include the growth series of Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus rex, the Montana’s T. rex skeleton, the “Big Al” Allosaurus specimen, and many other one-of-a-kind dinosaur finds. Museum of the Rockies also delights visitors with changing exhibits from around the world, permanent indoor and outdoor regional history exhibits, planetarium shows, and a museum store.
Amy Atwater, the paleontology collections manager at Museum of the Rockies (MOR) in Bozeman, gives visitors an inside look at the museum.
At the forefront of the MOR team is Dr. John Scannella, the curator, who is an expert in the growth and development of triceratops. The team also includes Scott Williams, the lab and field specialist. Williams is incredible at figuring out all sorts of problems including how to get a fossil out of the rock and from one place to another. Williams also studies an assortment of creatures from the Cretaceous time period. Amy Atwater represents the mammal lovers and is interested in the time period following the dinosaur extinction. Finally, Ellen-Therese Lamm specializes in histology.

The Museum of the Rockies houses the largest collection of dinosaur remains in the United States, possessing the largest Tyrannosaurus skull ever discovered, as well as the thigh bone of a Tyrannosaurus rex that contains soft-tissue remains.[1] The museum is part of the Montana Dinosaur Trail and is Montana's official repository for paleontological specimens.
The museum's collections focus on the physical and cultural history of the Rocky Mountains and the people and animals who have lived there, and date back more than 500 million years. Permanent exhibits include: Enduring Peoples, which chronicles the life of American Indians on the Northern Plains and near the Rocky Mountains; History of the Northern Rocky Mountain Region, whose inhabitants included Native Americans, fur traders, gold seekers, and white settlers from frontier days through World War II; Living History Farm, which includes the Tinsley House, where costumed interpreters demonstrate life in a turn-of-the-century home; and the Taylor Planetarium, a 40 ft (12 m), 104-seat domed theaterThe Museum of the Rockies preserves and tells the stories of Montana and the Northern Rockies; educating visitors about the region's rich history, which includes its paleontological roots.[2] The museum was founded in 1957, funded in part by a gift from Caroline M. McGill. The museum's collections have grown to include 300,000 objects that cover more than 500,000,000 years of history. In 1980, the museum acquired over 10,000 photographs and negatives from the heirs of Albert, Alfred and Chris Schlechten (now known as the Schlechten collection). These photographs chronicle the Bozeman and Yellowstone National Park areas over two generations (from about 1905 until the late 1970s),More Info

HISTORY
Dr. Caroline McGill, a doctor from Butte, Montana, founded Museum of the Rockies in 1957. McGill worked in partnership with MSU’s President, Dr. Roland R. Renne, and with Dr. Merrill Burlingame, head of the history department, to establish the Museum. She also served as the Museum's first curator. Her gifts included an extraordinary collection of Montana historical objects that were first housed in three Quonset huts on the MSU campus. The Museum was originally named the McGill Museum.
A volunteer corps of around 30 townspeople helped organize the collection in these Quonset huts for the first few years. The Museum was officially incorporated in 1965 as the Museum of the Rockies. By 1970, MOR hired its first full-time director, Less Drew. He brought professionalism to MOR and oversaw the design and construction of the first two Museum buildings.
Mick Hager became the director in 1982 and had the vision to expand MOR. He hired Jack Horner as the curator of paleontology. In his nearly 34-year career at MOR, Mr. Horner established a world-class paleontology research facility and expanded the focus of the Museum to include one of the most important dinosaur fossil collections in the world.
Sheldon McKamey became the Executive Director in 2003. Presently, MOR continues to focus on Paleontology, Native American History, and Montana History, while also having expanded to include Changing Exhibits from around the world, the Living History Farm, the Taylor Planetarium, the Martin Children's Discovery Center and educational programs for all ages.
