Kaštela - touristic promo film (ENG)
The town of Kaštela is located on the coast of the Bay of Kaštela. It has over 40 000 inhabitants, and it is the second largest town in the Split and Dalmatia County. It stretches over the length of 17 kilometers.
Our town is specific because of the fact that it developed around 7 settlements (Kaštel Štafilić, Kaštel Novi, Kaštel Stari, Kaštel Lukšić, Kaštel Kambelovac, Kaštel Gomilica and Kaštel Sućurac) or around castles. Each village has its own particularity merged into character of this part of Mediterranean. Radun and Rudine emerge in recent years as the two new smaller centers.
The eastern part of the city is a little industrial center. Cement factories, a steel mill and many shopping malls are situated there. Agriculture based on crops traditional for this region is developed in the Field of Kaštela an on the slopes of Kozjak. Growing of olives, grapes and cherries flourish in the recent times.
The western part of the town is more tourism- oriented. This is the area with most accommodation capacities: tourist apartments, rooms, camps and hotels.
There is a newly built Marina Kaštela in Kaštel Gomilica capable to accommodate large number of private and charter boats.
Kaštela is of the places with the best traffic infrastructure. We have an international airport Split – Kaštela, a railway station at Kaštel Stari, and access to Split – Zagreb highway at Prgomet and Vučevica.
There are many organizations and institutions which enrich cultural life of the town throughout the year.
The Museum of the town of Kaštela found its place in the Vitturi castle, and an exhibition room in onetime bishop’s summer residence in Kaštel Sućurac .
In February, traditional carnival festivities are held in Kaštel Sućurac, Kaštel Kambelovac and especially in Lower Kaštela (Štafilić, Novi, Stari) with tradition over 150 years long.
Every year from July 1 – August 31 the”Kaštela Cultural Summer” takes place. There are over 60 exhibitions, theatre shows, pop and classical music concerts, folklore, sport events and festivities (fishermen’s, hunters’, mountaineers’). Events are held at the most attractive places at the historic centers, castles and by the sea.
We especially highlight the “Evenings of Dalmatian Songs” held every July in Kaštel Kambelovac. Traditional a cappella singing arranged in modern or traditional manner is cherished there.

The one-thousand-year-old olive tree in Kaštel Štafilić is yet another sight that, by its age, beauty and splendor, testifies to the rich history, cultural and natural heritage of the town of Kaštela. This olive tree was supposedly brought from the far south of the Mediterranean, Greece or Southern Italy. It is 10 meters tall with a crown that has a radius of 22 meters. The girth of the trunk is 6 meters. Instead of main roots, it has a whole system of roots that are equally important for its survival that has developed in an area of 100 meters. The central part of the tree is dead. Its nutritive fluids flow along the outer part of the bark that also protects the inner support.
It is an oleiferous variety of small fruit producing extra virgin olive oil. Regardless of its age, it still yields fruit, and small bottles of this oil are on sale as a souvenir at the Museum of the Town of Kaštela. Its former owners donated the oil to the church where it was used for services.
Of exceptional beauty, size and age, the olive tree was proclaimed nature monument in 1990 and its application for UNESCO's World Heritage List is being considered. Healthy growth and vitality of the olive tree, i.e. its condition of yielding fruit, demands biological protection and treatment that is provided and carried out following the initiative of the Society for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage Bijaći in cooperation with the Institute for Adriatic Crops and Karst Reclamation. A project for the recovery and revitalization of the olive tree has also been made.
To all citizens of Kaštela this tree is much more than just an olive tree. It’s a symbol of a girl in her old age, it’s a theme of many songs, it’s a wonderful symbol of beauty and eternity, and it is our duty to preserve the heritage of our ancestors for future generations and to do our best to preserve this rarity in all its beauty.

Creative History Balkans Tour / Petrovaradin Fortress, Novi Sad
Creative History Balkans Tour (CHBT) is a project that aims to develop and promote the tour based on four historical fortresses in four Balkans’ countries: Petrovaradin Fortress in Novi Sad, Serbia; Citadela Fortress Old City of Budva, Montenegro; Kastel Fortress in Banja Luka, Bosnia and Herzegovina; and Skadar Fortress in Rozefa, Albania.
The significance of all these proposed locations and fortifications is that they each symbolise periods, type of architecture and design, and occasions for their built or creation. Balkan has been known as a turbulent region and for this reason cultural heritage, which is very rich, is important as it helps learning about each other and building bridges between people and communities, as well as between past and future.
The project CHBT is realised by Foundation Exit, it is provided by the RCC Tourism Development and Promotion Project’s Grant Programme and it is funded by European Union. This project will encourage and support increased youth mobility through the region, fostering close social interaction with host populations, which will contribute towards “tourism for peace” value.

The rock of Petrovaradin and its vicinity – the space occupied by Petrovaradin Fortress – had perfect conditions to be home to the earliest human settlements. The archaeological research conducted in 21stcentury showed that the plateau featured a series of twelve settlement, most of them having been fortified. Archaeologists are convinced that there are more prehistoric and more recent settlements still not discovered.
From the old mediaeval fortress, via the Austrian military fortification done in two phases to the home of cultural and educational institutions nowadays (the City Museum of Novi Sad, the Academy of Arts, the planetarium, the observatory, Atelier 61, numerous ateliers of masters in fine- and applied arts.), The Petrovaradin Fortress had a turbulent history, but it was always an important place of interest.
In XXI century, Petrovaradin Fortress became the centre of the largest open-air music (EXIT festival) and theatre festivals and it has been receiving a long-overdue detailed makeover in the years leading to its being elected the European Capital of Culture.
There are many legends about this place. Rumour has it that in the tunnels under Petrovaradin Fortress, which allegedly connects it with Novi Sad under the Danube River, there is a place with a thousand cats, hidden libraries and cursed treasure. But there is a sleeping monster there as well, as a young couple saw for themselves.
