MEKONG DELTA VIETNAM - Saigon Day Trip
We experienced local life along the Mekong Delta Vietnam for our last day in Saigon. We show you the best Saigon day trip that Vietnam has to offer, traveling by boat down the Mekong Delta and exploring a local Vietnam village along the way.
Our trip to the Mekong Delta Vietnam started with a 2 hour luxury van ride to a town called My Tho. Although we don’t normally take public tours, we arranged a small 6 person group tour with Vietnam Adventure Tours. Once we arrived in My Tho, we boarded a private boat to set sail down the Mekong Delta River. The 15 minute boat ride took us across the Mekong river to unicorn island where we explored a tourist area set up to mimic a traditional Vietnam Village. The activities on this island include: Bee Farm and Honey Tasting, Snake Holding, Coconut Candy Production, Chocolate Production, Snake Wine, and a Fruit Farm with traditional Mekong Delta music.
Next we got back on the Vietnam boat tour down the Mekong Delta to visit the area of Ben Tre. This is where we got to see a side of a more authentic Vietnam by boating down the river in a small sampan boat. This is one of the best things to do in Vietnam because you get to experience a world away from all development. We wish this part of the Mekong river tour was longer, as the small sampan boat ride was only 15 minutes long.
Next up on the Mekong Delta Tour was lunch which was included in our tour and very delicious. We were served a variety of Vietnamese food including fish, spring rolls, soup, rice, morning glory and prawns. The Vietnamese lunch was absolutely delicious!
When visiting Saigon Vietnam, we highly recommend you put a Mekong Delta Tour on your list of must do activities. Out of all the things to do in Saigon, this was one of our favorites! A quick 2 hour Saigon day trip away seems like a completely separate world apart from the hustle of Ho Chi Minh City.

We head out on a 4 hour private street food tour with Ben from 'The Street Food Man'. Walking around districts 3 and 10 we sample a huge variety of food and drinks from Bahn Xeo (sizzling pancake) and Bo La Lot to sugarcane juice and rice wine before ending up in a Seafood restaurant where Lorna tries crab & clams for the first time.

When I was in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), along with eating as much Vietnamese food as I could, one of my goals was to film a travel video about some of the best things to do in Saigon. After putting together a complete list, it turned out to be 23, and I hope this list of attractions will help and inspire you to visit Vietnam’s largest and most exciting city.
1. Binh Tay Market - Binh Tay Market is one of the largest wholesale distribution markets, and a perfect place to go if you’re looking to go shopping in Ho Chi Minh City.
2. Thien Hau Temple (Pagoda) - Located in Chinatown, in District 5, the temple is dedicated to Thien Hau and I really loved the sculptures and the elaborate design of the temple.
3. Museum of Ho Chi Minh City - This museum offers a glimpse into the history and development of the city and Vietnam.
4. Bitexco Financial Tower - This is the tallest building in Saigon, and you can either go to the Skydeck or a cafe at the top for a view of the city.
5. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace) - Probably one of the most well known tourism things to do in Saigon is to visit the Independence Palace, the the former home of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War.
6. Saigon Cathedral of Notre Dame - With the French influence in Vietnam, the Notre Dame cathedral is a beautiful Catholic church. Attend a service or just visit.
7. Central Post Office - Designed by Gustave Eiffel, the Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh City is an attraction mainly for its design and architecture. It’s a beautiful building.
8. War Remnants Museum - Although this is not one of the happiest attractions in Saigon, it’s a place to remember and honor the horrible events that are a result of a war.
9. Opera House - Right in Dong Khoi area, and there are still opera shows available.
10. Dong Khoi Street - This is the height of high end shopping in Saigon.
11. Saigon Zoo and Botanical Gardens - The zoo itself is not too great, but the beauty of the Saigon zoo is the botanical gardens, and the lush gardens, and taking a break from the city.
12. FITO Museum (Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine) - I was quite impressed by the Vietnamese medicine private museum - very interactive and educational.
13. San Art Laboratory – If you love modern art, the San Art Laboratory is a great place to see and visit in Saigon.
14. Turtle Lake at Night - If you’re looking for some things to do at night in Saigon, head to Turtle Lake to chill out, relax, hang out with friends, and eat snacks.
15. Ben Thanh Market - One of the most famous things to do in Saigon District 1 is visit the Ben Thanh Market, one of the major central landmarks of the city.
16. Phu My Hung and Starlight Bridge - Located outside of central Ho Chi Minh City, Phu My Hung is a modern development, and a great place to walk around.
17. Water Puppet Show - Though originally from the north of Vietnam, water puppet shows are popular also in Saigon. I went to the Golden Dragon Water Puppet theater.
18. Museum of Vietnamese History - Probably one of the most extensive and important museum showing the history of Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City.
19. Rooftop Bar - Seeing Saigon from above offers a great perspective.
20. Fine Arts Museum - This was my favorite of all the museums in Saigon. The museum is housed in a well preserved building, and the art is amazing - located right in District 1 across the roundabout from Ben Thanh Market.
21. Jade Emperor Pagoda - Dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the pagoda has a real ancient feel to it, and it’s worth seeing when you visit.
22. Local Wet Market - One of my favorite things to do is visit a local fresh wet market, which you’ll find all over the city. The ingredients, food, and culture, all stand out at fresh markets.
23. Vietnamese Street Food - By my ultimate favorite activity in Saigon is eating street food, and there are an abundance of delicious Vietnamese street foods to sample.

Phu My Ho Chi Minh City Cruise Terminal Port Tour & Info (4K)
Take a look at the cruise port of Phu My, the gateway into Ho Chi Minh City, aka Saigon, Vietnam. We were there in March 2018 as part of our 14 Day Asia cruise aboard the Princess Cruises Majestic Princess (aka 盛世公主号) cruise ship. Also take a look at the process of docking by cruise ship at the port.
The Phy My port terminal area is an industrial port as you can see in the video. We are American citizens, and a Vietnam Visa was required at a cost of $58 USD per person. We did not have to apply for the visa ourselves- the cruise line automatically does this and charges the cost to each guest's onboard account.
Getting off the ship required the ship key card and a Landing Card that was also prepared by the cruise line. Once ashore, the buses for the ship ordered excursions into Saigon are parked the closest. If you are on a third party tour like we were, you have to walk a little further to board the bus.
At the port a local Vietnamese merchants setup makeshift shops in case you wanted to purchase souvenir and goods. The drive from Phu My to Saigon was about 1.5 hours.

We are on the Reunification Express overnight sleeper train from Hanoi to Hue. We organized the first class carriage for everyone and this was our experience.

Ho Chi Minh City On Your Own (Saigon), Vietnam - What to do on Your Day in Port
This is a tour we purchased while onboard the Majestic Princess. We were on the 21 day Silk Road Journey maiden voyage. This was an 'On Your Own' tour where you get on a bus and they drop you in a city to wander on your own for a few hours. We paid $80 US each. We boarded a bus at the port city of Phu My, Vietnam and drove for about an hour and a half (each way) to Ho Chi Minh City, which used to be called Saigon. They dropped us of at the Bitexco Financial Tower. We met back there 3 1/2 hours later. We caught a cab to Ngoc Hoang Pagoda, which is widely known as the Jade Emperor Palace. After walking around there for a while we caught another cab to Chợ Bến Thành aka: Ben Thanh Market. It is a large shopping mall full of individual vendors selling everything. The cab rides were $6 and $5 respectively. The vietnamese currency is the Dong. It is about $1 US = 23,000 Dong.
After the market we strolled towards the Bitexco Financial Tower. Walking in town is an exciting experience. Pedestrians don't seem to have the right of way. On the way to the Tower we detoured down a street with a Farmer's Market going on. They had all kinds of fresh food there, including live crabs and snails.
Once we got to the tower we found out that the bar on the 52nd floor had a happy hour, and great views of the city. The observation deck, on the 49th floor, is $9 US p/p. We had a pitcher of the local beer, Tiger, and some garlic bread for about $6 US.
When we got ready to re-board the buses there was a little confusion. There were so many buses it took some time to find ours. Plus, it started pouring rain as we waited.
Ho Chi Minh City is is bustling town and very exciting to visit.

Why Ninh Binh (Vietnam) should be on the TOP of your travel bucket list
We decided to skip busy Ha Long Bay to explore Ninh Binh instead which has been described as Ha Long Bay on land. We have to say we have zero regrets. Ninh Binh turned out to be one of the most memorable parts of our Vietnam trip.
We start this vlog off with a tour of our accommodation. Located right at the bottom of the Mua Caves we stayed at Hang Mua Ecolodge.

With a tranquil view of the limestone caves to one side and rice fields on the other it made for an excellent accommodation in Ninh Binh for 5 days.
Once we were settled in it was time to climb the peak of the Hang Mua mountain where we could get a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
The next day we were picked up by our Ninh Binh private tour operator - Tommy’s Travel Service. Tommy is a Ninh Binh local unlike many of the other Ninh Binh tour operators and he organized an awesome schedule for us. If you're planning a visit to Ninh Binh Vietnam, we highly recommend Tommy's Travel Service. He's a real nice guy too!
Firstly we visited Trang An for a boat tour. This is also the former set for the Skull Island scenes from the King Kong Movie (which have since been removed, so we were lucky to have seen it). We were rowed through various caves and canals and saw amazing scenery unique to Ninh Binh. From the surrounding limestone caves to the complex water systems that ran between, we left with the most wonderful impression of Ninh Binh.

We start off this morning's Princess cruise vlog with a picturesque look at Phu My cruise port in Vietnam. Phu My is not a tender port, so we just hopped right of the ship and headed for the exit gate. In Phu My, however, just walking out the exit is not an option. You have to take a bus to the exit. So we waited in very short line, and ultimately made our way out. After a quick trip out the gate, we met our guide, hopped on a very comfortable mini bus, and started our journey to the Rex hotel. At the Rex hotel we drank fantastic Vietnamese coffee, listened to the informative talk of our guide Tu, and took in the beautiful views around the hotel. The next stop on our tour was a fascinating temple where we were guided through burning incense, and entertained with discussions about the culture and history of the area. Afterward we embarked on probably one of the craziest things we've done on an excursion. We traveled around the busy streets of Ho Chi Mini City Vietnam by rickshaw. Now, to clarify, being on a rickshaw was not the crazy part. The crazy part was the Ho Chi Minh City traffic, and feeling so close to it. It was a super fun adventure, and we highly recommend it. Next up was a stop for Pho lunch at the delectable Pho 2000 restaurant. The food was terrific. The restaurant was wonderfully chaotic, and certainly a must try experience. After lunch we took a quick trip to the market. Our guide told us we shouldn't bother trying to buy anything, because the haggling is commonplace. Other brief stops included Vietnams version of Notre Dame, and a famed post office. Following those brief stops, we headed off to the War museum. The war museum is a good stop for anyone interested in this dark period, and the historical significance of these events. We decided the images and other related items were too disturbing for our young son, and spent the majority of this stop in a nearby coffee shop. The final stop on our adventure was a Lacquer factory where we were treated to a thorough explanation of the process involved in creating these beautiful pieces of art. After the explanation we were allowed to spend some time shopping for souvenirs. We close out the video with a look at Phu My port. This was a quite day on our Diamond Princess cruise adventure. It was varied, exhilarating, and educational all wrapped up in one package. From the fun conversations with our guide, to the mouth watering Pho at Pho 2000, and the up close interaction with Ho Chi Minh City traffic, it was another memorable day on our Princess Cruises voyage to Asia. Overnight Train from Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) to Hanoi
What better way to see the Vietnam life than traveling to coastline from Ho Chi Minh to Hanoi via this narrow gage rail line. Two nights (33 hours) on the train in a sleeper berth with a full day of watching the world go by was a great journey.
Fields of Dragon Fruit fascinated us as they light up the landscape at night. Pretty ocean views and very green rice patties were abundant. Not sure we'd do it again (the narrow gauge rail was very rough), but it was fun and we're happy that we did it at least once.

MEKONG DELTA Tour VIETNAM: Mekong RIVER CRUISE day trip video
The Mekong Delta Vietnam is famous for its floating markets. There are lots of ways to see the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, usually they start with a cruise along the Mekong River from Can Tho on a river cruise boat which can be of various sizes depending on your tour group size and if you want to share your Mekong Delta River Cruise with others.
I chose to take a private 1 day Mekong Delta Tour 1, but you could also take a 1/2 day tour from Can Tho if you are pushed for time. I think to see the Mekong Delta properly it would be wise to overnight in the Mekong Delta, you can stay at a Mekong Delta Homestay such as the homestay I visit for lunch in this Vietnam Travel Vlog.
