Myakka River State Park - Wildlife - Hiking - Geocaching - Canopy Tower - Sarasota Florida
ALL DAY at Myakka River State Park. First was the bridge, then the nature trail and Canopy Tower Walk. You can see for miles up there. There was a large alligator at the wier that seemed to go towards any movement. During all of this we were geocaching. After lunch we hiked about 4 miles starting at Fox's High Road, then coming back on part of the Myakka Trail, which is more of a footpath through the landscape. This was an eventful day. This took place on 7/11/15 - The snake sighting did not happen that day, but was right next to my truck when I got back from a hike 7/22/15, gotta watch where your stepping.

Myakka River State Park.
I shot this video at Myakka River State Park with my Sony PMW-EX1 and Letus Ultimate this Park is one of Florida's oldest and largest state parks. The Florida Wild and Scenic Myakka River flows through 57 square miles of wetlands, prairies and woodlands. Myakka is popular for hiking, fishing, camping, and wildlife observation. I shot this short with the Sony PMW-EX1 and Letus Ultimate with Nikon manual 35mm film lenses to create the cinelook. I used mainly these lenses Nikon 300mm f2.8 tele with 2 x converter, 50mm f1.4, and the 24mm f2.0 wide angle. I shot most of this film in 720 24p in over crank mode (60 frames per second). A few of the shots were shot at 24p.

9. The Skunk Ape
The infamous Skunk Ape has been called; - the Swamp Cabbage man, Swamp ape, Stink ape, Florida Bigfoot, Louisiana Bigfoot, Myakka ape, and Swampsquatch, It is reputed to be, a hominid cryptic that inhabits the U.S. states of Florida, North Carolina, and even Arkansas. It is named for its appearance and the rather unpleasant odour that accompanies it.
It was in the 1970s that this strange creature from desolate areas in Florida hit the front pages, In 1974 a large, foul-smelling, hairy, ape-like creature, which ran upright on two legs was seen in the suburban of Dade County, Florida. It was then when Mythical creature investigators began dusting off their binoculars, donning their deer caps and heading for the forests of Florida.
In 1976 a chap called Mike Falconer found his heart pounding as he pulled over to see something roaming around in Myakka River State Park in Sarasota County. What he saw has given him endless sleepless nights. With trembling hands he managed to take the picture of a large figure but when he got to where it had stood all that remained was the overwhelming stench of rotting flesh.
8. Thunderbird
It’s a bird; no it’s a plane; no it’s Thunderbird soaring over the plains of Arizona!
It was in April 1890 when two cowboys in Arizona were astounded to see a giant birdlike creature with an enormous wingspan., a smooth skin, featherless wings like a bat and a face like an alligator. This creature was injured and these men were able to follow and killed it. They managed to drag the carcass back to town, where it was pinned with wings the length of an entire barn.
The Sioux Nation still talks about the “Wakinyan Tanka,” or the “Great Thunderbird.”
Small farmers in Arizona, Illinois, and Texas still claim that sheep often disappear with no resulting tracks . The only way is from the air and the only creature able to do this is the Thunderbird!
In 1977 in Logan County a 10 year old boy, while playing in his backyard, suddenly found huge claws clamping around his shoulders. He was lifted over 60cm (2ft.) into the air and carried for some distance before being released and finding himself crashing into the hard ground. The scars on his shoulders bore evidence to this frightening attack from, what many believe as the claws of the Thunderbird.
7. The Jersey Devil
The year was 1735 and the place Pine Barrens, Southern New Jersey when the Jersey Devil came into existence. This creature is described as having the body of a kangaroo, the head of a dog, the face of a horse, the wings of a bat, the horns of a ram, the arms of a Tyrannosaurus Rex, as well as the cloven hooves and tail of the devil himself! It moves quickly and as emits a blood-curdling scream” that will turn your blood cold!.
According to folklore, the Jersey Devil originated with a local resident called Mother Leeds who had 12 children, -[there wasn’t much to do in Pine Barrens in the 17 hundreds] and, after finding out that she was pregnant for the 13th time, cursed the child , crying that this must be the work of the.- In August 1735 Mother Leeds found herself in labour on a stormy night. The baby born appeared normal. It then changed, suddenly this same cute infant began growing at an incredible rate. It sprouted horns from the top of its head and talon-like claws tore through the tips of its fingers. Leathery bat-like wings unfurled from its back. It then savagely attacked its own mother, her. It then flew at the horrified onlookers , clawing and biting, voicing unearthly shrieks. Some say that this child’s real father was none other than the himself!
It then made its escape into the darkness and desolation of the Pine Barrens, where it has lived ever since and terrorizes any who has the audacity to encounter it.
In 1909 when there was a sudden Jersey Devil frenzy. Hundreds of sightings were reported from all over the state. It became so frenetic that even The Philadelphia Zoo posted a $10 000 reward for the creature.
He was never seen again until 1972 when he was spotted on the deserted Greentree road late one winter’s night. The large hideous figure with the torso of a man and the face of the devil was spotted on a dark and stormy night. The driver was so terrified that he slept the rest of the night in the locked car, Never again has he dared drive on Greentree Road, day or night, because he knows this is where the Jersey Devil rules supreme.

Sun n Fun - Sarasota, FL
The Stuck's spent a long weekend at Sun n Fun RV resort in Sarasota, FL.
We had a blast!
There are so many family friendly activites in the summer, so it is a great get away!
Some activities require a wrist band ... it is $20 for you weekend or week long stay. There are other options for those camping longer. It was definitely worth it though for the kiddos.
The park attractions are open to the public as daily visitors (admission required).
We took a day trip to the University Commons Mall that is close by (on a rainy day) as well as Lido Key Beach.
The campground in conveniently located.
It is a huge place, and has many park models and vacation homes as well. Staff is very friendly and accomodating.
For our size RV, we recommend the deluxe pull thru sites in the Queens section.
We will 100% return!
