Japan Solo Trip - Episode 3
Gifu & Cormorant Fishing at Nagara River
Third day of my Japan solo trip and I am going to Gifu. Gifu is the interchanging station from Nagoya to Takayama. Therefore, instead of transiting right away, I decided to stay a night at Gifu town and see what it has to offer.
In the afternoon, I visited the Mt. Kinka Rope-way, loacted at the North side of the Gifu town. You need to take a local bus from the town center to go to rope-way entrance. On top of the Mt. Kinka, there is a Kinka Castle which is very similar to the Nagoya Castle. Besides that, the panorama view on top of the mountain is absolutely amazing.
At night, I went to Nagara River (also reachable by bus). Over there, I witnessed the traditional way of catching fish, called the cormorant fishing.

Cormorant Fishing- Ukai Traditional Japanese Fishing
Courtesy of Wikipedia
Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method in which fishermen use trained cormorants to fish in rivers. Historically, cormorant fishing has taken place in Japan, China and Korea. It is described as a method used by the ancient Japanese in the Book of Sui, the official history of the Sui Dynasty of China, completed in 636 AD. This technique has also been used in other countries but is currently under threat in China.
To control the birds, the fishermen tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat. This prevents the birds from swallowing larger fish, which are held in their throat, but the birds can swallow smaller fish. When a cormorant has caught a fish in its throat, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat and has the bird spit the fish up. Though cormorant fishing once was a successful industry, its primary use today is to serve the tourism industry.
The types of cormorants used differ based on the location. In Gifu, Japan, the Japanese cormorant (P. capillatus) is used; Chinese fishermen often employ great cormorants (P. carbo). Darters (anhinga), which are very close relatives of cormorants, are also used for this fishing technique on occasion.
We had the privilege of witnessing this traditional fishing this summer on the Nishiki River by the Kintaikyo Bridge.
We highly recommend you check this out while you visit! You won't be disappointed

(tibs)お出かけマイク昔ながらの日本家屋が軒を連ねる岐阜市川原町Kawahara-cho, Gifu-shi, where old-fashioned Japanese houses stand

The townscape of Minatocho, Tamai Town, Motohama Town which continues west from the Umu Fisherman's boat trip north of the Nagarabashi bridge is still the old townscape with the famous Kawahara-machi and nice trellises.
This neighborhood where old-fashioned Japanese houses with long depths at narrow frontage flourished as a river port that used water transport of the Nagaragawa River in the past, was crowded with many shops. Even now, shops that manufacture and sell traditional crafts Gifu chuchu and Japanese sweets shops known for Gifu Confection Ayaki are open with a retro atmosphere.
In addition, modern eating and drinking stations that used town shops have appeared in recent years and new attractiveness has also been added. Because it is just around the corner of the Ukai viewing boat, it is also recommended for walking before Ukai viewing.
