Arkansas Receives Land For New State Veterans Cemetery
LITTLE ROCK -- Governor Mike Beebe today received the deed for 99 acres of land in Cross County at Birdeye that will become the fifth veterans' cemetery in Arkansas, and the second operated by the State.
This cemetery has long been needed for our veterans in East Arkansas,
Beebe said. This will make it easier for families and friends to pay their respects when we bestow the final honor upon those who have served our country.
We strive not just to provide services to our veterans, but to do so in the most convenient way possible for them, Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs Director David Fletcher said. East Arkansas needs this facility, especially with the advancing age of our vets.
The land was sold to the State by the family of Maurice Smith, a veteran and former director of the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, for $150,000. The cemetery will be established and operated by the State, but primary funding, including more than five-million dollars in construction costs, will still come from the federal government. The effort to obtain that funding as quickly as possible will be led by U.S. Representative Marion Berry and Arkansas's congressional delegation.
The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs will oversee a committee to select the design for the new cemetery and the United States Veterans Administration will have final approval. Depending on when federal funding is approved, the East Arkansas cemetery is anticipated to open in 2011. The site is expected to accommodate between 125 and 150 years of burials.
Currently, there are national veterans' cemeteries in Little Rock, Fort Smith and Fayetteville and a state veterans' cemetery in North Little Rock. Little Rock National Cemetery is full and no longer accepts burials.

these grounds date back as far as 1910 treating tuberculosis sufferers (smaller building located on the east wing area of grounds) but the Human Development Center began operating in the early 1960's.
The Human Development Center closed its doors due to series of failed safety inspections, the loss of its Medicaid certification, and with patient rape allegations on top of all that the facility officially had been shut down in 2011.

Confederates in the Cemetery: Federal Benefits & Stewardship
The federal government established the first national cemeteries during and immediately after the Civil War to provide honorable final resting places for soldiers who died in defense of the Union. However, it was also responsible for the burial of Confederate soldiers who died while being held as prisoners of war (POW). In some cases Confederate POWs were buried in designated sections of what would become national cemeteries, such as Finn’s Point, NJ, and Woodlawn NY; elsewhere, grounds were created specifically solely for Confederates, as at Rock Island and Camp Chase Confederate cemeteries.
Today the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, National Cemetery Administration (NCA), oversees nine Confederate cemeteries associated with POW camps, in addition to burials strewn throughout more than two dozen national cemeteries. Three national cemeteries—all located in states that ceded from the Union—contain the graves of Confederate soldiers who died during the war but not as prisoners, and Confederate veterans who died as recently as the 1940s.
More than thirty monuments associated with Southern sacrifice are located in these national and Confederate cemeteries. Some, erected by the federal government in the first half of the twentieth century, function as “group” grave markers; other memorial monuments were erected by Confederate heritage groups.
Federal policies that led to the acquisition, marking and care of these Confederate burial places reflect a spirit of national healing that was fueled, in part, by the common experience of the Spanish-American War (1898-99). Government stewardship of Confederate burials and cemeteries began in earnest at the end of the nineteenth century with the reburial of Confederate remains scattered throughout Arlington National Cemetery into a single section, with each grave marked by a new headstone designed with a pointed or peaked top. New legislation enacted early in the twentieth century established the Commission for Marking Graves of Confederate Dead, which from 1906 to 1916 operated to document all burials of Confederate POWs in states that remained loyal to the Union and marked the graves with the “Arlington-style” headstone. The passage of time between the war’s end and the commission’s charter resulted in the loss of information about many burials, so a group memorial was erected at some cemeteries. Several sites are marked by monumental obelisk memorials, such as those at cemeteries in Alton, IL, and Point Lookout, MD. Legislation passed in 1914 and 1929 authorized the government to furnish headstones for Confederate graves in all national cemeteries and in “city, town, and village cemeteries.”
In 1973, eighty-two national cemeteries and thirty-two soldiers’ lots—including Confederate sites—were transferred from the U.S. Army to what became NCA. NCA also took responsibility for providing “government headstones or markers at the expense of the United States for the unmarked graves of…Soldiers of the Union and Confederate Armies of the Civil War (38 USC § 2306)” who are buried worldwide. Ceremonial activities associated with recognizing the Confederacy is very limited; for example, the use of Confederate flags in memorial programs are confined to NCA cemeteries where Confederates are interred.
The Confederate legacy can be a contentious subject, and renewed interest in memorialization continues to challenge NCA with its limited authority to provide federal burial benefits for those who served the Confederacy in the Civil War.
This presentation is based on an ongoing study initiated by NCA and undertaken by Cultural Resource Associates Inc. of eighteen NCA cemeteries that contain significant numbers of Confederate interments and monuments. NCA is slated to publish the study, and will be installing interpretive wayside signage at all its Confederate sites to tell the varied stories of these places. Today NCA manages more than 131 national cemeteries and thirty-three soldiers’ lots.

In this video we show you were to park and how to find glory hole falls. This is a sweet waterfall in the Ozark National Forest in North Central Arkansas. You hike down an old road until you hit a stream. From there you can follow the stream down and find many smaller waterfalls along the way. Then you hit Glory Hole Falls . It is truly a sight to see.

The Woodlands Cemetery was founded in 1840 on 96 acres of William Hamilton's estate, known as The Woodlands. Today, the cemetery, mansion and landscape all form The Woodlands National Historic Landmark District, a site where Neoclassical and Victorian ideals coexist to crate a visual, living history of Philadelphia and the United States.
Kent Shreeve Memorial
Kent Evans Shreeve, 81, died at home on December 23, 2018. Born on February 17, 1937 in Jonesboro, AR, he moved to West Helena as a child, and the town and people in it remained a dear part of his life until he died.
He was predeceased by his parents Victor and Helen Burns Shreeve and sister, Kay. He is survived by his wife, Anna; daughters, KayRee Shreeve (Griselda) of Gilroy, CA; Jane Lea Smith (Jim) of Del Mar, CA; stepdaughters, Kristy Townsend (Chad) of Bentonville; Robin Wing (Jim) of Conway; Bridget Pitonyak (Eddie) of Little Rock; son, Michael Shreeve of Hot Springs; stepsons, George Waddell (Shannan) of Little Rock; Kim Waddell (Linda) of Carlisle, LaVaughn Waddell (Dee) of Houston, TX and many other family members and friends.
He enjoyed his grandpa role and delighted in the accomplishments of all his grandchildren. Often that million dollar smile was on display when Emma Smith; Stella, Sterling Grace, and Louis Waddell; Hayden, Maddox and Anna Marie Townsend; Ethan Rhoades (Brittany); Colton and Dustin Pitonyak (Deni); Kimberly Schalchin; and Brandon Waddell (Beth) came to visit.
Kent attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville where he served as president of Sigma Chi, Theta Tau, and Ta Beta Pi, earning both Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Civil Engineering. He was privileged to have served as a civil engineer lieutenant on active duty for three years in the US Air Force preceded by 4 years in the Army Reserve. He began his civilian engineering career at Shell Oil Company in Ventura, CA, followed by Humble Oil and Refining Co. in Baton Rouge, La. and later AFCO Steel in Little Rock. In 1972, he began Shreeve Engineering, Inc. His primary professional interests were industrial plants and forensic engineering. He was active in the Arkansas Academy of Civil Engineering where contributing to scholarships for civil engineering students was a primary pleasure, Structural Engineers Association of Arkansas and Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. His church home was St. James United Methodist and was a member of the Forum Sunday School Class.
He liked to hunt but was not a meat hunter. Carrying a gun to the woods with a few bullets, a cigar and a Butterfinger candy bar with a coffee thermos was good enough. Observing and interacting with wildlife, especially wild turkeys, were his primary objectives. Playing the piano was a special talent and he marked off a bucket list item by playing piano concerts of jazz ballads at the South Arkansas Art Center in El Dorado and St. John's Episcopal Church in Helena. Collecting classic books and selectively reading parts of them was a passion. Although he would not call himself an intellectual, his drive for learning never ended. He committed himself to the Obedient Life taught by Jesus Christ in the Sermon on the Mount and by Bill W. and Dr. Bob in the 12 steps and was committed to sharing this life with others. On July 5, he would have celebrated 37 years of sobriety. His ending to every note, letter or card was always Peace and Love.
Visitation will be at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home on December 27 from 5-7 pm and memorial service will be at St. James United Methodist Church at 10 am on December 28 with private burial in Mount Holly Cemetery, Little Rock.

Ozark National Forest | Richland Creek Wilderness Camping | Hiking to Twin Falls
This camping trip began with us leaving Little Rock, Arkansas and driving to Richland Creek Recreation wilderness in the Ozark National Forest. We set up camping outside of Richland Creek Recreation Area next to the Richland Creek Wilderness boundary line. After setting up camp we made black bean, mushroom, and spinach quesadillas. That even we went for a swim down Richland Creek further into the Ozark National Forest.
The next morning we woke up and made eggs with pastries. We then showed one of our DOME LIFE shirts, which can be picked up at . When you purchase any product, a portion of your purchase goes to clean up events on trail systems, campgrounds, and waterways in our national lands. After that we hiked deep into Richland Creek Wilderness to Twin Falls. After hanging out there for a while we worked our way back where we showed other swimming holes and some amazing fossils.
When we got back to camp, we cleaned off in the creek. While doing so we got to see our first wild Arkansas ferret. For dinner we made pasta and went to bed. The next morning we drove back to Little Rock, Arkansas.

Hiking to the TALLEST WATERFALL in ARKANSAS
Today we are going to hike on the Centerpoint trail to the hemmed in hollow waterfall. This waterfall is the tallest waterfall in the Midwest, rising above 209 feet. Ponca Arkansas is my favorite place to hike in Arkansas because their is so many hidden gems. The total mileage for the hike that we did was around 11 miles. If you take the Centerpoint route you will cross an old hand built cabin. Built in the early 1900s and was the last homestead occupied in the buffalo river before it was turned into a national river in the 1970's.
