Vienna Neue Burg
The Neue Burg was built in 1881-1913 as a new wing of the imperial palace and as such symbolizes the last convulsions of the Habsburg Empire. Today it is home to a number of interesting museums.
In the mid-nineteenth century Emperor Franz-Joseph II decided to expand the Hofburg, the imperial palace of the Habsburg rulers. In 1866 a competition was organized to determine the design. Several of Austria's foremost architects including Heinrich von Ferstel, Moritz Löhr, Theophil von Hansen and Carl von Hasenauer all submitted designs but none of the proposals were deemed satisfactory by the emperor.
He appointed Gottfried Semper, an accomplished German architect, who came up with a general plan based on a proposal by Carl von Hasenauer. The ambitious plan, which was called Kaiserforum, included the construction of two identical museum buildings (Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches Museum) and two new palace wings (Neue Hofburg), all connected by triumphal arches across the Ringstraße. This resulted in the creation of two new squares: Maria-Theresien-Platz and Heldenplatz.
Construction of the Neue Hofburg, which consisted of two mirroring semicircular wings arranged around Heldenplatz, started in 1881. Due to political and financial difficulties work continued at a snail's pace. The first wing was finally completed in 1913 but the outbreak of the First World War and subsequent collapse of the empire halted further construction. As a result the planned north-west wing and the triumphal arches were never built.
The building we see today is a bombastic structure in neo-Baroque style. Its curving facade, which seems to embrace Heldenplatz, consists of a monumental arch with a colonnade on either side. The equestrian statue in front of the Neue Burg shows the Austrian hero Eugène of Savoy, who crushed the Turkish invaders in the seventeenth century.
Museums
The completed south-east wing, now known as the 'Neue Burg', was never actually used as a palace. Today it houses the main reading room of the national library and it is home to no less than four museums.
The Hofjagd- und Rüstkammer (Imperial Hunting Museum and Armory) boasts one of the largest collections of arms and armor in the world. The collection includes weaponry from all across Europe, including Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Flanders. Some of the most beautiful items date from the Renaissance era, when German and Italian artists created fabulous custom-made armor for the Habsburg royals. There's also a selection of Ottoman weapons that were taken as spoils during the wars with the Turks in the seventeenth century.
Ephesos-Museum
At the end of the nineteenth century Austrian archaeologists brought antiquities they had discovered in Turkey and Greece to Vienna. Most of the items were excavated in the ancient city of Ephesus in Asia Minor. Ephesus was one of the most important cities of the ancient world. In Roman times it had more than 200,000 inhabitants.
The star attraction is the forty meter-long Parthian Monument from the second century AD, which is magnificently sculpted with figures in high relief. Another highlight is the sculpture of an Amazon from the Temple of Artemis and a bronze statue of an athlete. The museum also displays some finds from the Greek island Samothrace.
Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente
Historic Musical Instruments in the Neue Burg, Vienna
Musical instruments
The Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente (Collection of Historic Musical Instruments) in the Neue Burg boasts one of the world's most important collections of musical instruments from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Quite fitting for a city that is so closely associated with famous composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Strauss.
Vienna, Austria - Hofburg Palace HD (2013)
Hofburg Palace is a palace located in Vienna, Austria, that has housed some of the most powerful people in European and Austrian history, including the Habsburg dynasty, rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It currently serves as the official residence of the President of Austria. It was the Habsburgs' principal winter residence, as the Schönbrunn Palace was their preferred summer residence.
The Hofburg area has been the documented seat of government since 1279 for various empires and republics. The Hofburg has been expanded over the centuries to include various residences (with the Amalienburg), the Imperial Chapel (Hofkapelle or Burgkapelle), the Naturhistorisches Museum and Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Austrian National Library (Hofbibliothek), the Imperial Treasury (Schatzkammer), the Burgtheater, the Spanish Riding School (Hofreitschule), the Imperial Horse Stables (Stallburg and Hofstallungen), and the Hofburg Congress Center.
The Hofburg faces the Heldenplatz ordered under the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, as part of what was to become a Kaiserforum that was never completed.
Numerous architects have executed work at the Hofburg as it expanded, notably the Italian architect-engineer Filiberto Luchese (the Leopoldischiner Trakt), Lodovico Burnacini and Martino and Domenico Carlone, the Baroque architects Lukas von Hildebrandt and Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach (the Reichschancelry Wing and the Winter Riding School), Johann Fischer von Erlach (the library), and the architects of the grandiose Neue Burg built between 1881 and 1913.

The Hofburg imperial palace, Michealerplatz, Vienna, Austria
The Hofburg, the former imperial palace of the Hapsburgs, occupies a good portion of the Innere Stadt (the Inner City), the 1st District of Vienna. Here we see the facade of the Michael Wing of the palace, situated on Michaelerplatz.
In the center of the circular Michaelerplatz, just below ground level, one can view excavated Roman ruins, part of the Roman settlement of Vindobona.
Video & photos shot from in front of Michaelskirche, across Michaelersplatz from the Hofburg.
Neue Burg Vienna Hyperlapse (Wien Hyperlapse)
The name translates as Castle of the Court, which denotes its origins when initially constructed during the Middle Ages. Initially planned in the 13th century as the seat of the Dukes of Austria, the palace expanded over the centuries, as they became increasingly powerful. From 1438 to 1583, and again from 1612 to 1806, it was the seat of the Habsburg kings and emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, and thereafter until 1918 the seat of the Emperors of Austria. Since then the palace has continued in its role as the seat of the head of state and is today used by the Austrian Federal President.

HOFBURG PALACE AND IMPERIAL TREASURY: MUST-SEES IN VIENNA!
Hofburg Palace is the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria and it features several museums and royal apartments. It's history dates back to the 13th century when it was an imperial palace. It was the winter residence of the monarchs of the Hapsburg Dynasty. It's beautiful front exterior features several statues, including statues of Hercules. Inside we took a tour of the Imperial Treasury and saw some amazing jewels and artifacts, including Imperial crowns, coronation robes, and ceremonial swords. The southwest portion of the palace is called the New Castle (Neue Burg) and this is where Adolph Hitler gave a speech from the balcony, annexing Austria. If you visit Vienna, Hofburg Palace and it's Imperial Treasury should be high on your list of things to see.

Vienna In Your Pocket - Hofburg
Vienna In Your Pocket's Stefan Bauer tours the Hofburg, one of Vienna's main sites. Home to the Habsburg monarchy for more than six centuries, the ten major buildings comprising the Hofburg complex represent the splendour and influence of what was once the mightiest empire in Europe. While this has been the site of countless decisive historical events, the sweeping arcaded façade of the Neue Burg earned worldwide notoriety in April of 1938, when Adolf Hitler spoke to a crowd of 200,000 people from its central balcony. Nearly every Austrian monarch has left his (or her) fingerprint on the layout of this palace, resulting in a stylistic mishmash and a wide array of museums. Nearly every Austrian monarch has left his (or her) fingerprint on the layout of this palace, resulting in a stylistic mishmash and a wide array of museums. Maps in several languages are posted in the courtyards throughout the complex, but here are the highlights: the Schatzkammer (Imperial Treasury) houses the crown jewels, as well as the nail supposed to have pierced Christ's right hand and the so-called Spear of Destiny. If you're into impressive baroque interiors, the reading room of the Nationalbibliothek (National Library) is a highlight. For those with a fascination for sordid dynastic family histories, a ticket to the Kaiserappartements (Emperor's Apartments) includes the Silberkammer (Silver Vault) and Sisimuseum (Sisi Museum), lending an intimate insight into the private lives of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Elizabeth of Bavaria (better known locally as Sisi). The dancing white Lippizaner horses of the Spanische Hofreitschule (Spanish Riding School) perform here, as well as the boy sopranos and altos of the Wiener Sängerknaben (Vienna Boys' Choir). But even if you don't have time for a museum trip, a stroll through the Hofburg complex is a definite must.

Today I'm showing you the top things you can do in the beautiful capital of Austria, Vienna. With its cultural and intellectual heritage, Vienna is one of the most refined cities in Europe.
This can make some think it stuffy resulting in this atmospheric Austrian capital being excluded from many travel journeys. This is a mistake because Vienna is in truth a warm, friendly and charming destination with much to offer any visitor.
We are exploring the whole top things to do in Vienna, Austria, as we visited and enjoy the beautiful place, watch this full video and see the top things to do in Vienna, Austria.
First exploring St Stephen’s Cathedral. This monolithic structure stands proud in the Stephensplatz and has been the most important church in Vienna and Austria since its construction.
The beauty of this building is undeniable and its huge tower dominates the Vienna skyline and stands as the tallest church tower in Austria.
Everything about St Stephen’s Cathedral oozes opulence from the Romanesque and Gothic design of the exterior to the dominating pointed tower, and the intricately decorated main roof complete with hundreds of colored tiles forming an intriguing pattern.
Prater Amusement Park. What could be a more enjoyable way to experience Vienna than having a fun-packed day at the Prater Amusement Park?
The Wiener Prater Park was once a hunting ground that developed into a public space for food stands and small amusement stalls, it now hosts the impressive Amusement Park and is free to enter.
Inside the park is a multitude of rides and stalls including a huge Ferris wheel, bumper cars, carousels, and hair-raising rollercoasters. There are also such things as shooting ranges, a waxworks display and a light gauge railway to keep you entertained.
If rides and thrills are not your kinds of thing, there are several restaurants and cafes in the park to sit back and enjoy the scenery in.
Exploring the Schönbrunn Palace standing since the 1600s and holding a major role of cultural importance in Austria, the Schonbrunn Palace is a colossal 1441 room structure and complex that is the main tourist attraction in Vienna.
The Habsburgs have held residence here for many years and indeed emperors of Austria have been born in the palace too. The palace itself is an immense building and designed in a Baroque style with an asymmetrical main building that has hundreds of windows and statues on the rooftop.
Inside the palace are an assortment of rooms all fully furnished and decorated in the original style you can enjoy a tour through the rooms and admire the sumptuous furnishings and see how Austrian royalty lived.
The Hofburg Palace is another huge palatial complex that pays tribute to the power and influence of the Habsburg dynasty and served as the main winter palace for the rulers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire for hundreds of years.
Today the complex is home to offices of the president of Austria and serves as a presidential base. The buildings have undergone many additions since their creation in the 13th century and the most impressive of which is the fabulous semi-circular Neue Burg.
Visitors can admire the beauty and style of the baroque architecture, take a tour through the imperial apartments or visit one of the detailed museums in the complex.
Another exceptional part to the Schonbrunn Palace Complex and worthy of a separate visit in its own right, the gardens at Schonbrunn are simply magical.
The grounds of the park extend from the Palace for over a kilometer and you could spend hours walking through the various sections and displays.
