Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam
Nieuwmarkt (New Market) is a square in the centre of Amsterdam, Netherlands. There are over 20 cafés and coffeeshops facing the square. There is a daily market on the square, as well as an organic food market on Saturdays and a market for antiques and books on Sundays in the summer months.
The Nieuwmarkt is dominated by a building known as the Waag, originally a gate in the Medieval city walls but converted into a weighing house after the walls were demolished in the 17th century.

Waterlooplein Nieuwmarkt Jordaan & Canals Amsterdam (10.5.13 - Day 1192)
A nice long walk through downtown historic Amsterdam, starting out at Waterlooplein or Waterloo Square, criss-crossing through the tiny streets in the neighborhood to eventually reach Nieuwmarkt and continuing into the Red Light District a.k.a. De Wallen.
From Oudekerksplein we head onto Dam Square with it's Royal Palace, then criss-cross towards the West into the Jordaan - both the lower and the upper neighborhoods within that city district, but not before checking a few of the Negen Straatjes or Nine Streets.
In the end I'm having dinner at Japanese Pancake World and finish my walk through the Jordaan at night.

Nieuwmarkt Amsterdam
The Nieuwmarkt (new market) itself is a square in Amsterdam’s Chinatown, next to the Red Light District. The area was once an open canal, but the waterways were filled in in 1614 to create the marketplace which gives the square its name. A daily market is still held here, and the square is also home to an organic market every Saturday. Many lively cafés, bars, restaurants and interesting shops surround the square, making it the perfect place to spend a few hours browsing and people-watching.

The Weigh Station (De Waag) on Nieuwmarkt is the most magnificent of the city's remaining medieval gates. Built in 1488, St. Anthony's Gate (Sint Anthonispoort) eventually became an official weigh station for merchants, its original purpose as a defensive structure having become obsolete. A number of local guilds also moved into the building and each one had its own entrance. One of the halls was occupied by the Surgeons' Guild that occasionally dissected a freshly executed criminal, a popular event that was open to the public. Weigh stations and guilds also fell out of fashion over time and the building was used for several different purposes over the years, but since 1996 it has housed a swanky Dutch restaurant with a great summer terrace on the Nieuwmarkt.

Wie erbij is, weet hoe leuk het is om je een weekend lang onder te dompelen in de kunst in de Nieuwmarkt buurt. Filmmaakster Lidewij Meijer keek een weekend lang rond en maakte deze prachtige impressie. Na een spetterende opening op vrijdagavond 9 november in de Zuiderkerk, met de bezielde speech van Hanneke Groenteman, kwamen in het weekend 1705 mensen naar de Zuiderkerk en er waren 10,500 bezoeken aan de ateliers in de buurt.
‘Like’ en deel de film graag, zodat zoveel mogelijk mensen ervan kunnen genieten.

Open Ateliers Nieuwmarkt
One weekend a year, artists of the Nieuwmarkt area open up their studios to the public in the annual Open Ateliers Nieuwmarkt. Artists welcome you to view their artwork and discuss concepts, techniques and their work methods. Visiting local artists in their studios is an interesting experience and original way to see one of the oldest parts of the city and take a special souvenir back home. The central exhibition features an overview of all participating artists. The next Open Ateliers Nieuwmarkt is in 2020.

Tijdens dit evenement ontvangen zij u persoonlijk in hun atelier en tonen daar hun kunst, hun werkruimte en werkwijze. Een unieke kans om op een andere manier kennis te maken met de oude binnenstad van Amsterdam en de kunstenaars die er wonen en werken. Behalve de ateliers kunt u ook de centrale overzichtstentoonstelling bezoeken. De volgende Open Ateliers Nieuwmarkt is in 2020.

The Waag is a 15th-century building on Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam. It was originally a city gate and part of the walls of Amsterdam. The building has also served as a guildhall, museum, fire station and anatomical theatre, among others.
