Nila Gumbad : Delhi’s oldest Mughal-era ruin
Its beauty lies in its tiled dome, rare in Delhi. Situated behind Humayun’s Tomb, Nila Gumbad, or blue dome, was on the banks of Yamuna, the course of which shifted down the centuries. Now it faces the platform number one of Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station.
Built-in 1625 by Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khana, a noble in Akbar’s court, the Gumbad is Delhi’s oldest Mughal-era ruin. Though it is the tomb of Khan-i-Khana’s attendant Fahim Khan, The Delhi Walla saw no grave inside.
A single-structure monument, the visitor has to concentrate only on a few essentials. The building – standing on a 32.9 sq. m platform – is shaped like an octagon from outside and is a square within. The dome retains most of its original blue tiles. The wall facing the south too has to hold on to most of its blue, green and yellow tiles. You don’t find such a dazzling display of colours in any other monument in the city. The tomb’s all four sides have recessed arches enclosing a doorway.

Nila Gumbad New Delhi
Birds flying over the Nila Gumbad in New Delhi outside the Humayun Tomb complex. Nila Gumbad or Blue Dome was previously known as Nila Burj because it carries striking blue glazed tiles. It was built by Abdul Rahim Khan-I-Khana, son of Bairam Khan also a courtier in Mughal Emperor, Akbar's court, for his servant Miyan Fahim. Fahim, who not only grew up with his son,but later also died alongside one of Rahim's own sons, Feroze khan, while fighting against the rebellion of Mughal general Mahabat Khan in 1625/26, during the reign of Jahangir. This structure is octagonal on the outside while square with its ceiling is decorated with painted and incised plaster, it has a high neck dome and shows a conspicuous absence of a double dome feature, common to tombs of the period.

Nila Gumbad Arcade and Park in Nizamuddin East, Delhi
Nila Gumbad is possibly the earliest Mughal era building in Delhi, even pre-dating Humayun's Tomb. It originally stood on a river island and could only be accessed through Humayun's Tomb complex. Land surrounding Nila Gumbad is partly owned by the ASI while the land adjoining the railway tracks belongs to Northern Railways and is used to store construction material. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the ASI and Northern Railways in 2004 to suitably develop Nila Gumbad environs. Proposals for the landscape development of Nila Gumbad parkland were submitted to the Railways for approval in 2007. The plan includes the implementation of a sensitively designed landscape scheme and relocation of the existing road bifurcating Humayun's Tomb- Nila Gumbad sites. The proposal to re-site the existing road along the eastern edge of the park would facilitate access for visitors from Humayun's Tomb to Nila Gumbad, and allow vehicular access to Nizamuddin Railway Station while ensuring an adequate green buffer zone around the World Heritage Site.
The monument is a single-structure monument, located outside the eastern enclosure wall, which is locally known as Nila Gumbad, due to the blue coloured dome. The tomb's all four sides have recessed arches enclosing a doorway. The building -- standing on a 32.9 sq. m platform -- is shaped like an octagon from outside and is a square within. It is believed to contain the remains of one Fahim Khan, the attendant of Abdur Rahim Khan, who lived during the reign of Jahangir who died in 1626 A.D.

This is a human right of mobility which is being curbed and violated by urban planners who make a city entirely automobile dependent. I should have options about how I get from point A to point B. I should be able to walk, cycle, use a car, car pool, or use public transport. But if my city doesn't have any public transport, or is totally automobile dependent then my options of mobility are being reduced and my right to mobility is being violated.
4. Mid shot girls from Critical Mass Lahore cycling
5. Close up feet pedalling
6. SOUNDBITE: (English), Rafay Alam, group organiser, Critical Mass Lahore
Over half of Pakistan's import bill is on petroleum products and 55% of our petroleum imports go to the automobile and the transport sector. So if we can reduce our automobile dependence we can reduce our import bill as well.
7. Wide shot of Critical Mass group with Zeenath Khalid in foreground
8. SOUNDBITE: (English), Zeenath Khalid, member, Critical Mass Lahore
Well I actually do cycle, I used to come from Defence (Lahore suburb) with a colleague so as long as there is another person with me, I'm happy to do it. If I was on my own I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it. I wouldn't feel comfortable because I wouldn't feel safe, you know? People nudging you, pushing you, passing odd remarks. But the fact that you're in a group over here makes it easier and more acceptable somehow, to cycle, being a woman.

This is a Sohrab (Pakistani brand) cycle and this is a Chinese cycle. Most Pakistanis buy Sohrabs because quality and material-wise they are the sturdiest. This Chinese make is bought more for it's prettiness, but you can't carry a lot of weight on it, it's no good. Most people who buy the Sohrab are people like milkmen, fruit vendors. They buy it mostly because it doesn't give them any problems. This one (Chinese-make) is for going to the office or going to school, it's mostly children that take this one.
27. Various close up Sohrab lettering on bicycle frames
28. Mid pan of bicycles
29. Mid shot of man cycling away from the shop
LEAD IN:
A campaign is underway in Pakistan to get people to give up their cars and scooters and start pedalling.
The Critical Mass bicycle club in Lahore says the city's polluted and crowded streets are becoming no-go areas for cyclists and their rights to travel and live in a cleaner environment are being violated.
STORYLINE
Each day cycles, scooters and cars jostle for space on these hot and dusty roads that line Lahore.
Bicycling is still the most favoured method of transport for Pakistan's working classes, although on some roads it might not seem that way.
But the city has made no concessions to the cyclists, or other types of travel.
