Dad Norfolk and #3 (DT) - Evicted
JANUARY 2015 UPDATE: Dad Norfolk and DT The Missus have relocated to private property where they've built a nest and will no longer be harassed by the gov't. The nest is still in their territory but its exact location is not being revealed for obvious reasons. Eagle Nation is hoping for bobbleheads this spring.

EVICTED
These majestic birds are on the verge of being evicted from the Norfolk Botanical Garden. The Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries, the US Dept of Fish & Wildlife Services, the Federal Aviation Administration, the USDA Wildlife Services all agree that Dad Norfolk and his mate, Female #3 (DT) pose a risk to planes and passengers at the nearby Norfolk International Airport.
They've sent a letter to Marcus Jones, the Norfolk City Manager which states: We strongly recommend that the city of Norfolk move forward by requesting the appropriate permit to enable the removal of the bald eagle nest at the Norfolk Botanical Garden as outlined in the airport's wildlife hazard management plan and requested by the airport in correspondence to the Garden, November 2011. The continued presence of the nest there is a liability and poses a significant risk to public safety and to the safety of the eagles.
If the TPTB have their way, the eagles' nest will be destroyed and they will be continually harassed with paint balls and pyrotechnics in an effort to discourage them from rebuilding their nest in the Norfolk Botanical Garden.

Female eagle stages a coup at nest
There's a new partner in the pair of nesting bald eagles at Norfolk Botanical Garden.

NORFOLK - — The intruder has become the resident.
A young, adult female bald eagle stormed the nest of a breeding eagle pair at Norfolk Botanical Garden and apparently has flushed the long-time resident female out of the tree — perhaps out of the garden altogether.
We've not seen the resident female in 2 1/2 days, said Reese Lukei, a research associate with the Center for Conservation Biology at the College of William and Mary.
The eagle pair has been a popular attraction at the botanical garden and via an online eagle cam for several years now. But the flourishing eagle population in Virginia, which likely caused them to nest in such a public place, is also bringing competitors for suitable habitat.
The squabble over the nesting space and breeding partner fits with the behavior pattern of eagles, said Bryan Watts, director of the Center for Conservation Biology. But the triumph of the young female — probably a 4-year-old making her first breeding attempt — over the 12-year-old bird surprised Watts. Eagles can live 25 years.
Eagles can be incredibly aggressive around the nest surface, said Watts. That would typically not be tolerated.
Watts said the chance to observe this competition is incredibly rare. We've never had an opportunity to see this up close.
Lukei said the transfer of power might be distressing to the many birdwatchers who followed the established pair at the garden or online. But, he noted, the incident is a sign of a healthy population.
Watts said he and other biologists have been expecting for years now to see more of this type of behavior. Virginia's eagle population has grown from 33 pairs in 1977 to more than 500 last year, when the bird was de-listed as an endangered species.
The population is probably reaching some kind of upper limit. I think we're going to see this more and more, Watts said.
The established pair's three eggs, laid in early February, were almost certainly lost during this upheaval. The eggs went long periods of time without any incubation, and Lukei even observed the new, young female shooshing the male away from the nest when he tried to sit on it Saturday night.
Watts is trying to get the necessary state and federal permits to remove the eggs, so the new pair might breed this winter. The eggs will be studied at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science for embryo development, signs of the birds' diet and any levels of contaminants.
