Assurta a simbolo della città, la torre faceva parte di un castello fatto edificare nel 1072 dal Gran Conte Ruggero per garantire la protezione della valle del Simeto dalle incursioni islamiche. Attorno al castello e al piccolo borgo la popolazione iniziò a crescere grazie ai numerosi mercenari al seguito dei conquistatori normanni e all'arrivo di coloni provenienti dall'Italia settentrionale attirati dai privilegi a loro concessi. Il primo nucleo del maniero fu ben presto ampliato e dalle primigenie funzioni prettamente militari fu utilizzato per usi civili, divenendo la sede signorile della Contea di Paternò che Enrico VI di Svevia assegnò nel 1195 al nobile di origine normanna Bartolomeo de Luci[2][3] consanguineo del sovrano svevo. Il Castello negli anni seguenti ospitò re e regine, tra i quali Federico II di Svevia, la regina Eleonora d'Angiò e la regina Bianca di Navarra. E per concessione di Federico II passò a Galvano Lancia. Il castello di Paternò e i territori sottoposti, infatti, furono inseriti nella cosiddetta Camera Reginale che venne costituita da Federico III d'Aragona come dono di nozze alla consorte Eleonora d'Angiò e che poi venne ereditata dalle Regine che si susseguirono, sino alla sua abolizione. Dopo il 1431 appartenne alla famiglia Speciale e dal 1456 fino alla fine del feudalesimo fu proprietà della famiglia vicereale dei Moncada. Utilizzato come carcere nel XVIII secolo iniziò il processo di degrado e abbandono, ma dalla fine dell'Ottocento ha visto diverse campagne di restauro che gli hanno restituito l'antica possenza.

The castle was assigned to the daughter of Ruggero, Flandrina, wife of the ceramic expert Enrico di Lombardia. Around the castle and the small village the population began to grow thanks to the numerous mercenaries following the Norman conquerors and the arrival of settlers from northern Italy attracted by the privileges granted to them. The first nucleus of the manor was soon enlarged and from the primitive military functions it was used for civil uses, becoming the noble seat of the County of Paternò that Henry VI of Swabia assigned in 1195 to the noble of Norman origin Bartolomeo de Luci [3] ] consanguineous of the Swabian ruler. The Castle in the following years hosted kings and queens, including Frederick II of Swabia, Queen Eleanor of Anjou and Queen Bianca of Navarre. And by concession of Federico II it passed to Galvano Lancia. The castle of Paternò and the subjected territories, in fact, were inserted in the so-called Regal Chamber which was formed by Frederick III of Aragon as a wedding gift to his wife Eleonora d'Angiò and which was then inherited by the Queens that followed one another, until its abolition . It has narrow vertical openings in a fortification through which an archer can launch arrows or a crossbowmen can launch bolts.
Castello Normanno is one of the beautiful places in Sicily.

This documentary podcast takes a look at the Norman conquest of Sicily, which took place in the 11th century.
After 250 years of Arab control, Sicily was inhabited by a mix of Christians, Arab Muslims, and Muslim converts at the time of its conquest by the Normans. Arab Sicily had a thriving trade network with the Mediterranean world, and was known in the Arab world as a luxurious & decadent place. It had originally been under the rule of the Aghlabids and then the Fatimids, but in 948 the Kalbids wrested control of the island and held it until 1053. During the 1010s and 1020s, a series of succession crises paved the way for interference by the Zirids of Ifriqiya. Sicily was racked by turmoil as petty fiefdoms battled each other for supremacy. Into this, the Normans under Robert Guiscard and his younger brother Roger Bosso came intending to conquer; the pope had conferred on Robert the title of Duke of Sicily, encouraging him to seize Sicily from the Saracens.
Robert and Roger first invaded Sicily in May 1061, crossing from Reggio di Calabria and besieging Messina for control of the strategically vital Strait of Messina. Roger crossed the strait first, landing unseen overnight and surprising the Saracen army in the morning. When Robert's troops landed later that day, they found themselves unopposed and Messina abandoned. Robert immediately fortified the city and allied himself with the emir, Ibn at-Timnah, against his rival Ibn al-Hawas. Robert, Roger, and at-Timnah then marched into the centre of the island by way of Rometta, which had remained loyal to at-Timnah. They passed through Frazzanò and the Pianura di Maniace (Plain of Maniakes), encountering resistance to their assault of Centuripe. Paternò fell quickly, and Robert brought his army to Castrogiovanni (modern Enna, the strongest fortress in central Sicily). Although the garrison was defeated the citadel did not fall, and with winter approaching Robert returned to Apulia. Before leaving, he built a fortress at San Marco d'Alunzio (the first Norman castle in Sicily).

Bellissimo giro in mountain bike in compagnia degli amici bikers nella valle del Simeto alla scoperta della storia. Abbiamo prima visitato il borgo di Carcaci. Il borgo venne realizzato con pianta regolare e con gusto barocco spagnoleggiante: venne realizzato un monumentale ingresso, una chiesa, dedicata a santa Domenica, ormai in stato di abbandono, un castello. Nel 1819 il comune di Carcaci, che all'epoca contava 150 abitanti, venne posto, assieme a Catenanuova e Regalbuto, nel neo istituito circondario di Centuripe. Successivamente ci siamo diretti verso Il ponte dei Saraceni.
Il Ponte dei saraceni è un ponte in pietra risalente al IX secolo sul fiume Simeto. Collega il territorio di Adrano prov. di CT con quello di Centuripe prov. di EN, presso il passo del Pecoraio, e benché sia denominato Ponte dei Saraceni sembra essere stato costruito in epoca medievale normanna.

Beautiful mountain bike ride with friends bikers in the Simeto valley to discover the history. We first visited the village of Carcaci. The village was made a regular plan with a Spanish Baroque style: he was made an impressive entrance hall, a church, dedicated to St Sunday, now abandoned, a castle. In 1819 the town of Carcaci, which at the time had 150 inhabitants, was put together in Catenanuova and Regalbuto, in the newly created district of Centuripe. We then headed towards the bridge of the Saracens.
The Bridge of the Saracens is a stone bridge dating from the ninth century on the river Simeto. Connect the territory of Adranos prov. CT with that of Centuripe prov. of IT at the pace of Pecoraio, and although it is called the Bridge of the Saracens seems to have been built during the medieval Norman.

Adrano is a town and comune in the province of Catania on the east coast of Sicily.It is situated around 41 km northwest of Catania, which is also the capital of the province to which Adrano belongs. It lies near the foot of Mount Etna, at the confluence of the Simeto and Salso rivers. .The founding of the town and the pre-Christian .The settlement was founded by Dionysius the Elder around 400 BC, intending to strengthen Syracusan power in the region. He named the town Adranon in honour of Adranus a deity of Phoenician origin.In 344 BC the troops of Timoleon fought the forces of the Syracusan commander Iketas of Leontini near Adrano. During the following years, Adrano was frequently harried by Campanian mercenaries, called the Mamertinians.The Romans conquered the growing township in 263 BC and declared it a civitas stipendiaria, obliging it to pay a costly tribute to Romem. Only through the reign of Theodoric the Great (495-526), the conditions improved due to the administration by Cassiodorus. In the mid-6th century it was conquered by the Eastern Roman Empire.Around 950, the Arab Musa occupied the city of Centuripe and its vicinity, and thenceforth Adrano became part of the emirate of Sicily. . Several of their buildings and structures, like the Ponte dei Saraceni (Bridge of the Saracenes) can still be visited around the region.The Arabs reigned the region until in 1075 the Normans, led by Hugo of Yersey, succeeded in conquering the region against the resistance of Caid Albucazar. Adrano became part of the Diocese of Catania, administered by the monk Ansgerius. The citizens of the prospering township continued the successful agricultural and economic work the Arabs had initiated. Therefore, the Norman era was enormously influenced by winegrowing, leather work and silk manufacturing. Since the beginning of the 18th century and until around 1820, Adrano suffered from enduring riots and changes taking place in Italy and particularly Sicily, as was the Risorgimento. Adrano became the main administrative town of the vicinity in 1819 and hosted the local court.Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Sicily in 1860 and many reforms took place. On July 1, 1860, a town council was installed in Adrano, and don Lorenzo Ciancio was made chairman. The famous Teatro Bellini (Bellini theatre) dates from that time and testifies to the various diversifications the city underwent in that very period. A hospital was instituted as well, and meanwhile Adrano was considered the wealthiest town in the region. The Romans changed the name of the township into Hadranum; during the occupation by the Arabs it was called Adarnu or sometimes Adarna, while the Normans referred to it as Adernio and Adriano. Until 1929 its official name was Adernò, until eventually it was changed into Adrano. Several elder inhabitants of the town still call it Adernò.
