Mary Elizabeth Beth Scobie
You are watching an interview of Mary Elizabeth “Beth” Scobie, who was born in 1907 in Sharpes, Florida. M.E. Scobie was born to Frederick Scobie, the son of George W. Scobie, who began Brevard’s commercial fishing industry in Titusville, Florida. M.E. Scobie discusses her family’s prominence in the fishing industry as well as their venture into starting a cooperage, where barrels were made for shipping their seafood to distant communities, even across state lines. M.E. Scobie also discusses her maternal grandfather, Dr. George W. Holmes, who came to Titusville in 1874 to serve as a doctor and surgeon. She describes her grandfather’s dedication to his practice and his frequent travels to assist those in need of medical attention using boat, rail, or whatever means necessary to reach them.
Much of this interview focuses on M.E. Scobie’s personal memories of growing up in Brevard County and the types of people she worked with and came to know. This focus on community life centers primarily in the Titusville area and includes mentions of local spots such as the movie theater and Denham’s Dry Goods, her school days writing compositions and performing pageants, street dances on the corner of Julia Street and Washington Avenue, as well as other festivities and activities. M.E. Scobie’s career life is also discussed in detail, from her start working as clerk or bookkeeper at various local establishments to working at the courthouse and dealing with the Futch Act at the tax collector’s office. Various periods of change in the community are also mentioned including life during Prohibition and World War II, as well as changes in land value and the introduction of the “Long Range Proving Ground,” alongside the development of the space program.
M.E. Scobie passed away on February 17, 2003 at the age of 95.

The Florida city of Palm Bay is located in Brevard County, on the east Central Florida coast. The city is situated just 10 miles southwest of Melbourne, about 65 miles southeast of Orlando, and 180 miles north of Miami. Major highways near the city include Interstate I-95 and U.S. Route 192.
Palm Bay's modern history traces back to 1959, when the Mackle brothers from Miami purchased land for a local residential project. Although the project had its stops and starts, it spurred the growth of industry and population in the area, leading to the incorporation of the city of Palm Bay in 1960.
The city's first major industrial corporation, Radiation, Inc., later evolved into the Harris Corporation. Other industry soon followed, and the 1970's saw construction and expansion in the city. Palm Bay experienced enormous growth in the ensuing two decades, including the completion of a new municipal complex housing the city hall and police station. The city today continues to grow largely due to its proximity to the ocean and to other major areas of central and coastal Florida.
Things to See and Do in the Palm Bay Area
Palm Bay and the Brevard County area offer a choice of many sites for recreation, entertainment, and culture. The Wildlife Turkey Creek Sanctuary is home to many rare and endangered plants and animals. The Florida Tech Botanical Garden offers a 30-acre landscape of picturesque palms in numerous varieties. Anglers can find plenty of fishing at the Sebastian Inlet State Park, 20 minutes south of Palm Bay, where sport fishing can be done from private boats or on one of numerous charter fleets.
A lively arts community thrives in Brevard County, home to an abundance of talented artists, musicians and actors. The Maxwell C. King Center for the Performing Arts plays host to a variety of performing arts, including Broadway musicals, symphonies, opera, jazz, ballet, and comedy. Other area theatres include the Phoenix Theatre and the Melbourne Civic Theatre.
The Brevard Museum of Art & Science offers interactive children's exhibits as well as art classes throughout the year. Also located in the Brevard County area are the Margaret Homes Nature Center, the Titusville Historic Museum, the Brevard Museum of History and Natural Science, and the Air Force Space Museum. Fifty miles to the north is the Kennedy Space Center and Astronaut Hall of Fame, and 65 miles to the northwest is the city of Orlando, home to world class attractions such as Disney World, Universal Studios, and Sea World.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding

- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! Learn about the National Historic Landmark locations I shot:
1 - The Maitland Art Center (formerly known as The Research Studio)
A historic site in Maitland, Florida. It was founded and designed by architect and artist J. Andre Smith (1880-1959) in 1937 as an artist colony, dedicated to experimental art.
2 - Fort King (also known as Camp King or Cantonment King)
A United States military fort in north central Florida. It was named after Colonel William King, commander of Florida's Fourth Infantry and the first governor of the provisional West Florida region.
The fort was built in 1827, during United States tensions with the Seminole in Florida, a tribe of mostly Creek people who formed in the early nineteenth century. Originally established to serve as a buffer between new settlers and the Seminole, the fort became an important base in the 1830s for the United States Army during removal of the Seminole and the Seminole Wars. It later served as a courthouse in 1844 after the organization of Marion County, but was eventually abandoned altogether.
3 - Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park
A Florida State Park and historic site located on the former homestead of Florida author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (August 8, 1896 – December 14, 1953). She was an American author who lived in rural Florida and wrote novels with rural themes and settings. Her best known work, The Yearling, about a boy who adopts an orphaned fawn, won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939[2] and was later made into a movie of the same name. The book was written long before the concept of young adult fiction, but is now commonly included in teen-reading lists.
4 - The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light
A lighthouse and museum located at Ponce de León Inlet in Central Florida was erected on the south side of Mosquito Inlet in 1835. At 175 feet (53 m) in height, it is the tallest lighthouse in the state and one of the tallest in the United States.
5 - The Windover Archeological Site
An Early Archaic (6000 to 5000 BC) archaeological site found in Brevard County near Titusville, Florida, USA, on the central east coast of the state. Windover is a muck pond where skeletal remains of 168 individuals were found buried in the peat at the bottom of the pond. The skeletons were well preserved because of the characteristics of peat. In addition, remarkably well-preserved brain tissue has been recovered from many skulls from the site. DNA from the brain tissue has been sequenced. The collection of human skeletal remains and artifacts recovered from Windover Pond represent among the largest finds of each type from the Archaic Period.
