North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Pickering - Grosmont - Whitby.
A day on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway on 22/03/2016, the 2nd day of the 2016 timetable (as opposed to the Flying Scotsman visit). The 11:00 service from Pickering to Grosmont was in the hands of 37264. We then changed at Grosmont and waited for the following service to Whitby hauled by BR standard 4MT 2-6-0 76079. This train is first of seen pulling through the tunnel at Grosmont, and then seen at a sunny Whitby as it runs round its' train. Finally, we see the return service on it's arrival at Pickering as again it runs around its' train, and then sets off with the last train of the day back to Grosmont.

'The Pickering Paxman' and the Red Timetable on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway 15/7/17
Saturday 15th July 2017 marked the first time a High Speed Train set visited the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. 'The Pickering Paxman' was the name of the one-off railtour in support of The Railway Children charity.
Upon arrival on the Moors it looked as if it was going to be a very wet and miserable day, however, after getting soaked through at Moorgates and Beck Hole, the weather started to improve.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is a heritage railway in North Yorkshire, England running through the North York Moors National Park. First opened in 1836 as the Whitby and Pickering Railway, the railway was planned in 1831 by George Stephenson as a means of opening up trade routes inland from the then important seaport of Whitby. The line closed in 1965 and was reopened in 1973 by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd. The preserved line is now a significant tourist attraction and has been awarded many industry accolades.
The 18-mile (29 km) railway is the third-longest standard gauge heritage line in the United Kingdom, after the West Somerset Railway (22.75 miles (36.61 km)) and the Wensleydale Railway (22 miles (35 km)), and runs across the North York Moors from Pickering via Levisham, Newton Dale, Goathland and terminating at Grosmont. Some heritage rail operations continue along Network Rail tracks to Whitby. The railway is formed from the middle section of the former Whitby, Pickering and Malton Line which was closed in 1965 as part of the Beeching cuts.
The NYMR is owned by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd (a Charitable Trust and Accredited Museum) and is operated by its wholly owned subsidiary North Yorkshire Moors Railway Enterprises Plc. It is mostly operated and staffed by volunteers.
The North Yorkshire Moors Railway was first opened in 1836 as the Whitby and Pickering Railway. The railway was planned in 1831 by George Stephenson as a means of opening up trade routes inland from the then important seaport of Whitby. The initial railway was designed and built to be used by horse-drawn carriages. Construction was carried out by navvies and coordinated by top engineers. Their three main achievements were cutting a 120-yard tunnel through rock at Grosmont, constructing a rope-worked incline system at Beck Hole and traversing the marshy and deep Fen Bog using a bed of timber and sheep fleeces.
Pickering railway station is the current terminus of the railway and serves the busy market town of Pickering. The station has been restored to its 1937 condition with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Levisham railway station is a small countryside station set in the scenic Newton Dale valley. Farwath railway station was a small railway halt located between both Pickering and Levisham. Newton Dale Halt is a remote walkers' request stop. There are excellent walks and beautiful scenery within easy reach. Goathland railway station is another typical countryside station, almost unchanged since its construction in 1865. Grosmont railway station was the railway's permanent northern terminus until 2007, when trains began operating into Whitby on a regular basis. Whitby railway station is, on many operating days, the railway's northern terminus.

Part Two 'The Scarborough Spa Express with 35018'...
For the sixth year in the last seven we headed off to the North Yorkshire coast for a week in a caravan at The Blue Dolphin caravan park, in a party of five with my wife, our 21 month old son, my wife's Mum and her Nan. This gave the opportunity to film some of the steam trains running in this part of the world, unfortunately all with a degree of diesel assistance due to the lack of rainfall this summer!
For part one it is 'The North Yorkshire Moors Railway', the line runs from Pickering to Whitby through the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. We visited on Monday 16th July alongside a day trip to the market at Pickering and a trip to Goathland village, otherwise know as 'Aidensfield' from Heartbeat! The NYMR was running its Red timetable six trains running with steam assisted by diesel on the rear on the southbound services and diesel with steam dragged on the rear on the northbound services. Std 4 no.76079, J27 no.65894 and B1 no.1264 were the steam locos, Diesel's no.D7628 'Sybilla', Class 26 no.26038 'Tom Clift' and Class 20 no.20189 the respective supporting diesels.
First its Pickering and whilst the others enjoyed market day I watched Std 4 no.76079 arrive with the 11.40am from Whitby, take water in platform 2 before attaching back to the rear of train and get dragged out at 12pm by D7628 on the Whitby service.
Next its Moorgate, Goathland and we see B1 no.1264 climb out of Goathland heading the 1:50pm Whitby to Pickeing service with 20189 assisting at the rear.
Finally its Goathland station and whilst the others enjoy tea in the cafe I popped down to the station to see 76079 arrive with the 2:50pm Whitby to Pickering (with D7628 at the rear), 26038 arrive and depart with the 2:50pm Pickeing to Whitby (with 65894 at the rear) and finally 76079 depart for Pickering. A very nice couple of hours watching the trains pass by in glorious scenery! Many thanks to the NYMR for keeping steam running despite the dry conditions!

A quick visit to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Pickering station September 2017
We couldn't come to Pickering without a visit to the station,we were very lucky to see two steam loco's.
We had planned to visit the Yorkshire Wolds railway,Cedar Barn and the Orchard Farm Railway,sadly this didn't run due to the rain so it looks like another long trip out to that one again next year.
North Yorkshire Moors Railway Great Steam Train Journey Pickering to Whitby
Late April 2018 and the weather looks good for my first trip on the NYMR. I'm accompanied by long time buddy John, who's relatively local to the area and of course we have cameras at the ready!
However, a massive thanks to John McLay for supplying audio clips when I had issues with my mic connection.
So after an essential morning coffee, we board the 9.30am train from Pickering to Whitby. We're hauled by a powerful BR Class 4 2.60 Loco and the chugging up the 1-49 gradient is a brilliant sound! We stop at a few stations enroute including Goathland, which has been the location for several TV and films over the years.
Once at Whitby, we head off for lunch, foregoing Fish & Chips this time round, then it's a quick wander around and up to the Abbey. The Abbey, made more famous by Bram Stoker in Dracula. All too soon it's back to the station for our return trip to Pickering.
We leave our train at Grosmont station, head to the cafeteria and consume more cake and coffee. Then it's off to the loco shed/works to view some of the repairs and restoration going on.
From Grosmont our schedule means a diesel trip, but I'm able to shoot some time-lapse enroute. All in all, a brilliant day out and many, many thanks to all the volunteers who make this possible!

A day on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. A gem among the UK's many heritage railways, this line runs through one of the most rural areas of England. It is also one of the oldest railway lines in England, and therefore in the world. The line was planned in 1831 by George Stephenson, a pioneer in railway engineering. The line saw its first traffic in 1836 when horse-drawn carriages started to haul freight to the then important seaport at Whitby. In 1845, the line was re-engineered to allow the use of steam locomotives. The railway fell victim to the Beeching cuts in 1965 and was reopened by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust Ltd. The preserved line is now a significant tourist attraction and may be the busiest heritage railway in the world.

Steam at dusk. The 1710 Whitby to Pickering train, filmed on consecutive days in late October 2019. Owls hooting, pheasants spluttering, roe deer by the river. Lengthy tracks, limited editing - a bit of indulgence for me - the essence of 'Landscape Moments'.
The landscape dominates, wildlife makes its presence known, and the steam locomotive barks its way into the distance. There were no other spectators - and it could so easily have been the 1960s.
Doubtless there will be some viewers who turn off quickly, or maybe fall asleep - because I've not edited out everything but the close-up shots. Each sequence was priceless to me, in its own way........it was the last major intrusion of noise into the sleeping Esk Valley before nightfall took hold. What a privilege to witness!

Dog's are very welcome at NYMR. It's a great day out for the family, plenty to see, including the heartbeat TV show location and where they filmed parts for Harry potter.
