TROMSO, NORWAY 2017. Part Three - Whale watching in the Fjord’s.
Part three of Tim & Julies trip to the Arctic Circle in January 2017.
We stayed in Tromso for one week but the highlight of our visit was the day we spent on a whale watching trip in the nearby Fjord's.
I had to heavily edit ninety minutes of footage but finally reached the point were I wasn't prepared to remove anymore images, so here is the end result ( at just under twelve minutes ).
If you have enjoyed this or any other of my little films, I would welcome any comments.
Thank you and I hope I have managed to convey some of the magic and the spectacular sights of Wild Norway
???????? NORWAY TRIP - TROMSØ, THE NORTHERN LIGHT HUNT
When you and your Canarian friend went on a weekend trip to the north of Norway.
When this weekend at the North Pole becomes the most unlikely weekend.
When you get up in the morning and it is already sunset from the polar night.
When you rent a car and they give to you a Jaguar Sport.
When you come out of a Sauna to throw yourself in the snow at the edge of the Arctic Ocean. When you go on the northern roads and stop on an icy beach.
And finally when, lying on the ground of this beach, you look at the sky, and you see that green glow waving in the sky like a snake, and you understand that you are observing an northern light. At this moment, you understand that you have just experienced one of the most beautiful experiences of your life. ????
Thank’s to you my friend, Yannick Meunier, it’s was unbelievable ! The first one of a longs series ... See you soon for or next adventure.

North Norway, Aurora Borealis & Whales
The adventure begins in Tromsø, the “Paris of the North.” Here you can experience an area rich with Norse and Sámi history, after which you’ll embark on your whale-watching voyage in the early evening.
We’ll follow two potential courses for this voyage: one heads south around the island of Senja (mainly used from mid-January to March), while the other moves north to the Kvaenangen fjord (visited in November to mid-January).
Both routes depend on weather conditions, the amount of daylight during the voyage, and the expected location of the whales.
Assuming you make the first voyage, you’ll typically start by sailing clockwise or counter-clockwise around the island of Senja. You’ll spend several days along the north coasts of this island as well as Andfjorden, where we’ve had success spotting whales. We’ll keep a sharp lookout for sperm whales and other species here.
Near the island of Andenes, located along the edge of the continental shelf, whales dive especially deep to feed on giant squid. You may also see white-tailed eagles hunting herring in this area. These are some of the largest birds of prey in Europe.
We’ll port for the night in one of the many scenic fishing villages nearby, such as Skrolsvik, Andenes, Gryllefjorden, Hamn, or Sommarøy. After sunset, we’ll make short hikes along the coast or in the villages, all the while keeping our eyes open for the enchanting glow of the auroras.
We’ll then continue our circumnavigation of Senja, followed by a voyage to the small island of Sommarøy. Here there are good opportunities to see the northern lights, embark on pleasant hikes, and take in the island’s small bays and white beaches.
On the seventh day of the expedition, we’ll sail back to Tromsø with time enough for you to shop for souvenirs, visit a museum, or take a walk in the fresh winter air. We’ll disembark the next day, taking home a wealth of memories and pictures.
A few things to keep in mind about these voyages:
Because of the seasonal occurrence of herring and whales in Northern Norway’s fjords, the whale safari cruises take place in winter, when the Northern Norway days are short and the nights long.
Whale watching (orcas and humpbacks) is highly dependent on the variable herring stocks in the area, and this is ultimately unpredictable. Other whales (i.e., sperm whales) are not dependent on herring, which is why we have a good chance of seeing them in specific areas, such as along the south route near Andenes.
Our chances of seeing orcas are minimal, while the odds of encountering other species (for instance, humpbacks) are higher. The expedition leader will adapt the sailing plan to maximize your chances of seeing whales.
Additional note: The coasts and fjords of Norway are renowned for their beauty.
In the far north of the country, about 350 km (217 miles) north of the Arctic Circle, lie the islands of Kvaløya and Senja. Enormous schools of herring gather in the fjords around these islands to live out the winter.
This abundance of food creates one of the largest concentrations of biomass on Earth, which in turn attracts large numbers of whales. It is these giants of the sea that this voyage is dedicated to finding.
During winter the daylight is limited, but the nighttime hours are far from wasted: North Norway is one of the best areas in the world to see the northern lights, a magical phenomenon that can only be fully appreciated when the sky is clear and dark, with minimal light pollution.
This voyage offers ample opportunities to admire the auroras from the remote bays and fishing villages where you’ll spend the night.

Tromsø-Senja-Lofoten Northern Lights Tour - January 2019
NORWAY january 2019
What an incredible trip! This time we went through a new route Tromsø - Senja - Lofoten islands that became our favourite! We explored the Northern Norway for 6 days and once we were close to be stuck in Lofoten islands because of enormous amount of snow (watch proofs in the video). However, our awesome driver and tour leader Riccardo did his best to don’t let anything (even nature) interfere with our trip and Alberto as always captured these beautiful memories in his own style ????
Many thanks to our wonderful participants:
- Donna Pangan
- Krassa Diakova
- Anuj
- Bascar Sami
Without you this trip wouldn’t be so charged of good energy. Hope to meet you again one day!
P.S. this time we didn't see so much Aurora on the land. But we watched it from the airplane ✈️ Check in our instagram:
Whale Watching Tromso Arctic Norway I
January 16th, 2016 I follow out on the fjords with my colleague Marcus, in for his whale watching tour. We started the tour out from Lauklines Kystferie, in Kattfjord, and sailed out to Håja (the model for the Arctic Cathedral), and then towards Sommarøy.
Pity, but I forgot my zoom and had only with me the Aurora lens, 14-24 mm, so I decided me for quit the pictures and do filming instead with my Nikon D7000, and it went it to a great success.
It was a crazy day out on the fjords together with the humpback whales. Just loved it..;)

What a place to get away. Jeff Allen is a longtime sea kayaker who guides expeditions to his favorite place on Earth: northern Norway. The expedition starts in sea kayaks, paddling while surrounded by orcas and whales distracted by the herring rich waters; then moves to land, on sleds pulled by energetic dogs. It's a pleasure for Allen, since he knows that what the expeditioners will see will truly blow their minds. Filmed by Greg Dennis and with music by Chris Davey, this short documentary was shot during the blue time—the stretch of winter when the sun doesn't rise above the horizon.

Aubrey was a Speech-Language Pathologist, Donnie was graphic designer, but we both had a dream to travel the world and experience cultures. After three years of being married and dreaming about if something like this great adventure would be possible, we decided to quit the rat race and take on the world. We sold everything we had, quit our jobs, and took off! We don't know how long we will get to do this, and we do have a goal of getting jobs in the UK eventually, but we are going to live it to the fullest while we can!

Amazing Views and Northern Lights over the City of Tromso - Best Day Ever!
Had such a fun day today in Tromso, Norway.
We first went for a hike on the outskirts of the City to get a nice viewpoint overlooking the City as the sun was setting. Once again the light was absolutely beautiful so it made for some nice landscape photography.
Later that evening we then went up Tromso's cable car to watch the Northern Lights over the entire City. It was really incredible and such a fun day!
Oh and I fall over...... a lot!

Tromsّ is a city in the very northernmost part of Norway. It is almost 350 km north of the Arctic Circle and is one of the best places to view the spectacular Northern Lights in winter.
Tromsّ is a surprise to most visitors: Here you find art, history, sophistication, good food and an infamous nightlife in a bustling, tiny city. All of it, though, is surrounded by spectacular scenery that is visible from everywhere in town. The city is home to the world's northernmost university, as well as research institutes and satellite based industry. The population is therefore highly skilled, but retains the straightforwardness and sense of humour that the North is known for.

===================
Tromsّ's most visited attractions include Polaria, The Arctic Cathedral, The Cable Car, The Tromsّ Museum, the Polar Museum and the Botanic Garden.
Aurora
--------
The Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights is a natural light phenomenon in the night sky.
Tromsّ is very favorably located for viewing the Northern Lights, but you cannot see the aurora at all times.
Tromsّ is within the aurora belt mostly between 6pm and midnight, occasionally between 4pm and 2am.
It has to be dark for you to see it. Between late September and late March, it is dark after six, and you have maximum chances of seeing the lights.
Clouds obstruct the view of the Northern Lights. October and November are humid autumn months, and often you don't see the lights. From December onwards, the weather is drier. March is THE driest month in this six-month period of good chances.
Conclusion: December to mid/late March are the best times. Pick December/January for atmospheric visits in the dark, or February/March for thrilling outdoor activities. Sporty, outdoorsy people are recommended to come in March, as this month gives the opportunity to do outdoor activities in plenty of sunshine and good weather, and still observe the aurora after dark. The mid term holiday in February in many European countries is also a good time to come.

This is our second international trip alone together. I regretted not filming our trip in France so I bought a GoPro off some dude on Craiglist (bless his soul for not ripping me off) and this was the end result.
We only saw the slightest glimpse of the Northern Lights, but I wasn't disappointed at all because Norway makes you feel like you have the whole country to yourself. The lands are simply untouched and the atmosphere is just so serene.
Most of the outdoor footage was from our last day in Norway. I rented a car with a fellow traveler and we took it out to Sommarøy. The drive was so relaxing. Nothing but beautiful green fields and waterfalls on the way there. Then Sommarøy itself is an island with white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. I would have never thought to go to Norway, but cheap flights and wanderlust prompted us to do so. Now I can't wait to go back and explore much more!
Huge thank you to our Couchsurfing host Ihsan and his friends for their amazing hospitality (home-cooked Pakistani meals everyday omg). Another huge thanks to Julia, for pushing us to explore more and for her amazing German driving skills lol. We miss you all already!
I hope you all enjoy the video. Bear with me, this is my first time using a GoPro and editing a video lol.
