Hi, I'm Heather Dudley Nollette and I'm the great great great grand-daughter of Lucinda and Loren Hastings, who built this beautiful building in Port Townsend, WA in 1889.
The Hastings Building is still owned by the original family and we're seeking to complete a full historic rehabilitation on the building in the near future.
This building is one of only a few remaining structures designed by the architect, Elmer H. Fisher. In retrospect, Fisher is well-known for designing grand architectural features -- like this full-length glass atrium -- features that were perhaps too advanced for the engineering technology of the day.
The atrium here in the Hastings Building cracked under snow-pack sometime around the 1930's, and we're hoping to restore it, in addition to many of the other features like the conical cupola on the top of the building, when we complete the rehabilitation.
My brother and my cousins and I grew up visiting Port Townsend and running around playing hide and seek in this building. But most of the people in Jefferson County, including many who've lived in our community their whole lives, have never been inside the upper floors of this building.
My grandmother, Jean Dudley along with Mary Johnson, did use the upper floors of the Hastings Building to begin the Port Townsend Summer School of the Arts in the 1960's. And there are still people today who do remember taking classes from Jean and Mary in the building. They are so excited about the possibility of rehabilitating this building and bringing it back to the community
The Hastings Building is a pivotal historic structure in Port Townsend's downtown historic district. The Port Townsend Main Street Program has facilitated so much work over the last 26 years to ensure the historic preservation and economic vitality of our commercial historic districts ... while maintaining our small town quality of life. Winning this National Trust Challenge would help our community to develop historic preservation and economic development resources like an Online Interactive Building and Business Inventory, which would help us to preserve and promote the buildings and businesses in our commercial historic districts.
Historic places like the Hastings Building do matter to people -- they represent a connection to our past and an opportunity to come together today to steward our community resources into the future.
Vote for the Hastings Building because THIS PLACE MATTERS!
The Salish Sea: Jewel of the Pacific Northwest
The Salish Sea region is an ecological jewel straddling the western border between Canada and the United States, connected to the Pacific Ocean primarily through the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There, lush and mossy old-growth forests meet waters with dazzlingly-colored anemones and majestic orcas.
A beautiful new book, The Salish Sea: Jewel of the Pacific Northwest by Audrey DeLella Benedict and Joseph K. Gaydos (Sasquatch Books; $24.95; March 2015), combines a scientist's inquiring mind, dramatic color photographs, and a lively narrative of compelling stories. This is the first book of its kind to describe the Salish Sea, whose name was not even officially recognized until 2008. One of the world’s largest inland seas, the Salish Sea contains 6,535 square miles of sea surface area and 4,642 miles of coastline. Fashioned by the violent volcanism of the Pacific Rim of Fire, plate tectonics, and the sculptural magic wrought by Ice Age glaciers, the Salish Sea is a unique ecosystem home to thousands of different species of mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and macro-invertebrates.
Amongst breathtaking color photography, The Salish Sea takes a look at the region’s geology, fauna, and history, and ends with hope for the protection of its future. The reader is left with a sense of wonder for this intricate marine ecosystem and the life that it sustains.

Port Angeles Trip
This was my first time to the quaint town of Port Angeles.
Stayed at a cute hostel style hotel in downtown. Very affordable, clean, and cute:
Port Angeles is such a cute town with so much to do!! While I was there I explored Hurricane Ridge and Crescent Lake, along with the Olympic Game Farm.
All are MUST SEES if you're traveling the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state.
If you're exploring Port Angeles for the first time I highly recommend these places:
Bada Bean (great place to start the day, or just to sit back and relax. Super good coffee and even have some food!)
Next Door (they have some of the best food I've ever had!!)
Station 51 Tap House (the owners of this bar are seriously the nicest people I've ever met. Very helpful in helping you select a good beer and also recommended fun things to do in the area)
MOSS (super cute boutiqe that embodies the Pacific North West vibe)
Homecoming Parade (Port Angeles , Washington)

Washington's Olympic Peninsula
The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding is located on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State, a unique natural biome of the world. Surrounded by water on three sides, the Peninsula is a haven for people interested in marine activities such as boating and fishing. Mossy rain forests create native habitat for a host of wild animals.
Home to the Olympic National Park, the peninsula attracts visitors from around the world. Natural wonders include the Olympic Mountains and the Olympic National Forest.
-
pacific-oceanThe Peninsula has some of the most pristine Pacific Ocean beaches in the United States. You can visit Lake Ozette near the coast and take a day hike out to the beaches where you will see sand as well as logs, estuaries and sea stacks.
Tribal communities include Neah Bay, Elwah and Jamestown S'Klallam Tribes, who participate each year in the annual Canoe Journey. The Olympic Culinary Loop and local Wineries provide special events and tours that will satisfy everyone's taste for fine food and beverages.

SUMMARY
=======
Seattle ( (listen) see-AT-əl) is a seaport city on the West Coast of the United States. It is the seat of King County, Washington. With an estimated 744,955 residents as of 2018, Seattle is the largest city in both the state of Washington and the Pacific Northwest region of North America. According to U.S. Census data released in 2018, the Seattle metropolitan area's population stands at 3.94 million, and ranks as the 15th largest in the United States. In July 2013, it was the fastest-growing major city in the United States and remained in the top 5 in May 2015 with an annual growth rate of 2.1%. In July 2016, Seattle was again the fastest-growing major U.S. city, with a 3.1% annual growth rate. Seattle is the northernmost large city in the United States.
The city is situated on an isthmus between Puget Sound (an inlet of the Pacific Ocean) and Lake Washington, about 100 miles (160 km) south of the Canada–United States border. A major gateway for trade with Asia, Seattle is the fourth-largest port in North America in terms of container handling as of 2015.The Seattle area was inhabited by Native Americans for at least 4,000 years before the first permanent European settlers. Arthur A. Denny and his group of travelers, subsequently known as the Denny Party, arrived from Illinois via Portland, Oregon, on the schooner Exact at Alki Point on November 13, 1851. The settlement was moved to the eastern shore of Elliott Bay and named Seattle in 1852, in honor of Chief Si'ahl of the local Duwamish and Suquamish tribes. Today, Seattle has high populations of Native, Scandinavian, African, and Asian Americans, as well as a thriving LGBT community that ranks 6th in the United States for population.Logging was Seattle's first major industry, but by the late 19th century, the city had become a commercial and shipbuilding center as a gateway to Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush. Growth after World War II was partially due to the local Boeing company, which established Seattle as a center for aircraft manufacturing. The Seattle area developed into a technology center from the 1980s onwards with companies like Microsoft becoming established in the region; Microsoft founder Bill Gates is a Seattleite by birth. Internet retailer Amazon was founded in Seattle in 1994, and major airline Alaska Airlines is based in SeaTac, Washington, serving Seattle's international airport, Seattle–Tacoma International Airport. The stream of new software, biotechnology, and Internet companies led to an economic revival, which increased the city's population by almost 50,000 between 1990 and 2000. Owing largely to its rapidly increasing population in the 21st century, Seattle and the state of Washington have some of the highest minimum wages in the country, at $15 per hour for smaller businesses and $16 for the city's largest employers.Seattle has a noteworthy musical history.
