Notre Dame Cathedral & Buu Dien in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam | Vlog #25
Hey, guys. What is good?
It is my first day in Ho Chi Minh City also known as Saigon in the beautiful country of Vietnam. I arrived late last night but still managed to wake up early to try my hostel's breakfast. Then started my walking tour immediately afterwards.
My 4th stop is the Notre Dame Cathedral/Square & Saigon's Central Post Office or Buu Dien. It is one of the famous places to visit here in HCMC but unfortunately you won't be able to enter the church because it is currently under renovation. And just a street away is the Buu Dien or Post Office of Saigon, this place has a beautiful interior full of shops, travel agents and everything in between.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (Saigon) - Part 1 - Notre Dame Cathedral, City Hall, Central Post Office
This is part 1 of a trip I made to Vietnam in March 2014. This was the first stop on an almost three week tour throughout the country. This video highlights the first videos I took here, which are really the first videos I took of any of my trips. These show some major sites in Ho Chi Minh City, such as the Central Post Office, Notre Dame Cathedral, the City Hall and main square area, Reunification Palace, and the Ben Thanh Market area. Enjoy!
Vietnam walk - Strolling around Ho Chi Minh Square (人民委員会庁舎,ホーチミンスクエア) - 4K
In this video we’ll show you Strolling around HCMC (人民委員会庁舎,ホーチミンスクエア), Vietnam.
Ho Chi Minh Square can be found in the middle of District 1, right in the city centre, and is surrounded by beautiful French colonial style buildings. On this square you will find a statue of Uncle Ho, which was placed to honour the 100th birthday of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee (City Hall).
The City Hall is a popular place for tourists to take pictures and is especially beautiful around dusk, when many of the landmarks are lit by soft lighting. On the left flank of the square you find the five-star Rex Hotel which is also designed by French architects and was home to International journalists during the Vietnam War. A state of the art shopping mall with all international brands, a food court and some luxury hotel rooms can be found on the right side (also French colonial architecture).

Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon by City Pass Guide
City Pass Guide is proud to bring to you beautiful intro videos of the most iconic attractions around Vietnam.
NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL
The famous central Saigon Cathedral, built in 1877, is one of HCMC's architectural marvels, built with materials imported from France. Sitting between two streams of traffic, the streets outside are always bustling with traffic and street vendors. Inside, the decor is austere, but the church is lively during services and is a popular location for wedding photos.
Many tourists to Ho Chi Minh City head straight to Notre Dame Cathedral as their first stopping point of interest, and with good reason. It's hard to miss the church's twin towers projecting into the sky some 200 feet. Notre Dame Cathedral's red bricks arrived in Vietnam from Marseille.
In 2005, the statue of the Virgin Mary located out front supposedly shed tears, according to eyewitnesses, although the Catholic Church of Vietnam refuted this event.

If this is your first time in Ho Chi Minh City, knowing exactly what to do can be a challenge as this large city is filled with unique landmarks. Today, Ho Chi Minh City is a popular tourist destination due to its fascinating culture, classic French architecture, and sleek skyscrapers as well as ornate temples and pagodas. The city is also filled with rooftop bars that overlook Saigon and beyond, while fantastic restaurants offer a combination of French, Chinese, and, of course, local Vietnamese cuisine.
Ho Chi Minh at a Glance:
The city centre is located in District 1, where you can visit some of its most popular landmarks. Backpackers can find affordable accommodation, restaurants, and bars at Pham Ngu Lao Street.
District 2 houses the city’s expat community, so expect plenty of high-quality apartments, villas, and houses if you’re staying in this neighbourhood.
What's good about Ho Chi Minh? The most modern city in Vietnam, however, still has a lot of history, with a nice mix of modern and historical landmarks. Excellent for shopping and a good range of restaurants suitable for all budgets.
What is less good? Traffic congestion – so many scooters! More expensive than most cities in Vietnam. Be aware, pickpockets are active in touristy areas.
Things to do:
Notre Dame Cathedral.
Built in the late 1880s and is located in Paris Square. Measuring almost 60 metres in height, the cathedral’s distinctive features include the all-red brick, stained glass windows, two bell towers containing six bronze bells that still ring to this day, and a peaceful garden setting in the middle of downtown Ho Chi Minh City District
A Virgin Mary statue also stands in front of Notre Dame Cathedral, which locals claimed to have shed tears in October 2005. While this incident was refuted by the Catholic Church of Vietnam, thousands of visitors still flock to this statue in hopes of witnessing a miracle. Aside from its status as one of Ho Chi Minh City’s most prominent attractions, Notre Dame Cathedral still serves as a religious institution for the local population. The best time to visit is during Sunday mass at 09:30. As with any holy places around the world, do dress appropriately and refrain from disturbing the worshippers when you’re exploring (and photographing) Notre Dame Cathedral.
Reunification Palace.
The palace is like a time capsule frozen in 1975. You can see two of the original tanks used in the capture of the palace parked in the grounds. The Palace has lush gardens, secret rooms, antique furniture, and a command bunker. It's still in use to host important occasions in Ho Chi Minh, including APEC summits.
Central Post Office.
The Central Post Office is a beautifully preserved remnant of French colonial times and perhaps the grandest post office in all of Southeast Asia. Located next door to Notre Dame Cathedral, the two cultural sites can be visited together and offers visitors a chance to imagine life in Vietnam during the times of the Indochinese Empire. Once inside, the looping arches, intricately designed marble floors and antiquated telephone boxes all serve as a reminder of the importance the post office played in days before email and mobile phones
This is still a functioning post office, and everyone is encouraged to send a letter or postcard from here – it’s a piece of living history where even the old fashioned glue pots are still in use for sticking stamps to letters.

Saigon's Most Iconic Church: The Notre Dame Cathedral
There are many iconic Saigon buildings, but The Cathedral Notre Dame may be one of the most photographed and most well-known. Built by and for the French colonialists in the 19th century, today, the church services the Catholic community and is often used as a popular photography backdrop.

Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), the Largest City in Vietnam
Ho Chi Minh City, formerly named Saigon is the largest city in Vietnam. The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers from the South China Sea and 1,760 kilometers south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The metropolitan area is populated by more than 9,000,000 people, making it the most populous metropolitan area in Vietnam and the countries of the former French Indochina.
The city was once an important Khmer sea port prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century. Conquered by France in 1859, the city was influenced by the French during their colonial occupation of Vietnam, and a number of classical Western-style buildings and French villas in the city reflect this.
Under the name Saigon, it was the capital of the independent state of South Vietnam from 1955-75. In 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding province and was officially renamed Ho Chi Minh City, after the pre-eminent but by-then deceased North Vietnamese leader. However the old Saigon name is still used by both Vietnamese and foreigners, especially when referring to the most central part of the city to which most tourists flock.
Today, the city's core is still adorned with wide elegant boulevards and historic French colonial buildings. The most prominent structures in the city center are Reunification Palace, City Hall, the Municipal Theatre and Notre-Dame Cathedral. Some of the historic hotels are the Hotel Majestic, dating from the French colonial era, and the Rex and Caravelle hotels are former hangouts for American officers and war correspondents in the 1960s/70s. The city has various museums, such as the Ho Chi Minh City Museum or the Museum of Vietnamese History.

What is Tet? (from Wikipedia)
Tết, or Vietnamese New Year, is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture. The word is a shortened form of Tết Nguyên Đán, which is Sino-Vietnamese for Feast of the First Morning of the First Day. Tết celebrates the arrival of spring based on the Vietnamese calendar, which usually has the date falling in January or February.[1]
Tết is generally celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year, except when the one-hour time difference between Vietnam and China results in new moon occurring on different days. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Vietnamese calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tết by cooking special holiday food and cleaning the house. These foods include bánh chưng, bánh dày, dried young bamboo soup (canh măng), giò, and sticky rice. Many customs are practiced during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year (xông nhà), ancestor worship, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop.
Tết is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. They start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year. They consider Tết to be the first day of spring, and the festival is often called Hội xuân (spring festival).
