Katie Parla's Rome: The New Testaccio Market
The nearly three year old Testaccio Market is new by Roman standards. When it opened in the summer of 2012, fans of the original market were skeptical of the modern space that had moved away from the heard of the district. But now, due to thriving new businesses and hard working well-established ones, the New Testaccio Market is proving to be a successful marketplace. I visit Sartor (Box 70) for meat, Da Artenio (Box 90) for baked goods, Mordi e Vai (Box 15) for sandwiches, Fior di Zucca (Box 82) and Silvia & Gabriele (Box 68) for produce, Chicchi e Lettere (box 43) for coffee beans, and Dess'Art for dessert.

The Nuovo Mercato Esquilino is just a short walk from the main train station, Termini. We have heard that this market is more multicultural than the other markets of Rome. Already during the walk through the quarter we notice many Asian stores.
As we reach the market, we are a little disappointed because the offer obviously includes only fabrics, clothes, leather goods, etc.. In the courtyard we see many students. In one corner is a café and where we take a rest, enjoying a cappuccino.
Obviously, the market is housed on the ground floor. Upstairs are lecture halls of university or an institute.
As we get back on the road, we notice that the real market in a neighboring building. Here we find fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and anything else for daily consumption. Both the seller and the customers seem to come from all over the world. Just like the range of goods for sale. Everything looks very fresh. The different cultures and their colors joy amaze us and we can not get enough of us.
The Nuovo Mercato Esquilino has replaced the previous green market at the Piazza Vittorio Emanuelle II.
Where once was the market, is now a park. The square with its surrounding imposing city palaces was built around 1880. It is located on the bottom of a Roman cemetery for slaves and criminals.
In the park, you can visit the Porta Magica. It is next to the striking oversized architectural remains of a Roman fountain, the Nymphaeum of Alexander Severus and the Villa of the Marquis Massimo Palombara di Pietra Forte, one of the most famous alchemists of the 17th century.

Jhs.

WHAT TO EAT IN ROME, ITALY | Rome food tour
We're in Rome, Italy! In this 3 part series we're exploring Italy's capital city to hunt down the best Roman food. Rome has a distinct cuisine- one based on nose to tail eating, punchy bold flavours, fresh ingredients prepared simply and they love their street food.
This is our second video from Rome and we're eating street food plus Cucina Romana (Roman cuisine) from a traditional, local restaurant. We start at Mercato Testaccio and hunt down one of the city's best sandwiches- a braised beef sarnie filled with bitter greens. It's utterly delicious and well worth eating. Next up we head to a famous bakery that has a long history of producing maritozzi, a beloved breakfast bun made up of sweet dough piled with whipped cream. We wash it down with an espresso before heading for a more modern Roman street food snack- trapizzino. Trapizzino are a sort of pizza pocket- fluffy, chewy dough encasing traditional Roman dishes like tongue cooked in salsa verde, tripe and chicken cacciatora. They are SO good! We finish up at a raucous, fun restaurant where we eat horse, traditional Roman pasta (cacio pepe), tripe and bull's testicles!! What a meal!
We hope you enjoyed this Roman food tour! And we hope it helps you in your search for what to eat in Rome! #romanfood #romefoodtour #italianfood
