SUMMARY
=======
The Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a National Wildlife Refuge located where the Occoquan River meets the Potomac River in Woodbridge, Virginia, United States. The 644-acre (2.61 km2) site, about half of which is wetlands, was a popular tourist spot known as Dawson Beach until the 1940s, after which it was used for military research by the U.S. Army's Harry Diamond Laboratories from the 1960s to the 1990s. When the land was purchased from the military, it was temporarily called the Marumsco National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge was formally established and renamed in 1998, and is now managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service as part of the Potomac River National Wildlife Refuge Complex.

The Buzz: Potomac Heritage Trail
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently voted to execute two rights-of-way permits, granted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior, to build and improve trails in the Occoquan Bay and Featherstone National Wildlife Refuges. The federal permits give the Prince William County Department of Parks and Recreation two-year construction rights-of-way and 50-year trail rights-of-way in each of the refuges.
The nearly two miles of trails will become part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail, which was conceived in 1983 as a U.S. National Park Service amenity and stretches between the Laurel Highlands of Pennsylvania to the Chesapeake Bay. We now have the legal right to construct and maintain the trails, said Seth Hendler-Voss, the director of the county's Department of Parks and Recreation. Both wildlife refuges have trails through them. We're just going to be enhancing them. There's going to be some boardwalk and bridge crossings, but they'll primarily be crushed stone and natural dirt trails.
Funding for the $258,650 trail through the Occoquan Bay refuge will come from the county's capital improvements program. A $568,000 grant from the Federal Access Land Program, along with a county match of $146,250, will pay for the trail through the Featherstone refuge, Hendler-Voss said. The Featherstone section of the trail will have spurs shooting off the main trail leading to fishing spots, observation areas and non-motorized boat access to Farm Creek and the Occoquan Bay.
Getting the permits is a significant accomplishment, Hendler-Voss said. It's a big deal. It's taken years to get the National Park Service and Fish and Wildlife Service on board. This is the last step in what was a very lengthy process to get the easements.
Trails in both of the wildlife refuges run on the east side of U.S. 1 to follow the Occoquan River and Occoquan Bay down to the soon-to-be-completed footbridge over Neabsco Creek. The trails will connect, through on- and off-road sections, to Rippon Park. Eventually, the trail system will connect to Potomac Shores and run down through Dumfries to the Museum of the Marine Corps and Locust Shade Park.
Hendler-Voss said the trails through the wildlife refuges are scheduled be completed by the winter of 2018. We're very excited to be knocking out a very large chunk of this trail corridor, and we're looking forward to getting it open to the public. It will provide a new level of user experience on the property.

THE BUZZ - Neabsco Boardwalk Ribbon Cutting
A large group gathered on Saturday, National Trails Day, for the long-awaited opening of the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk.
**********************************
The boardwalk — which is three quarters of a mile long, 10-feet-wide, and elevated with a two-story observation deck — is part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail and the newly formed Neabsco Regional Park. The new park includes the Julie J. Metz Wetlands, the Rippon Lodge historic property and the Rippon Landing Neighborhood Park.
Woodbridge District Supervisor Frank Principi spoke at the ceremony saying that he worked to bring the boardwalk to the Woodbridge District since 2008, when a small group of residents suggested the idea. It was worth the wait, however. “Good things come to those who wait. A decade later, we stand here today and celebrate the opening of … the Potomac National Heritage Scenic Trail, Neabsco Creek Boardwalk and Neabsco Regional Park.”
Principi went on to say that the boardwalk will join people with the environment. “The boardwalk connects us to both our nature and our history. The boardwalk connects us to our tidal wetlands and the wildlife habitats of fox, deer, muskrat, beaver, herons, egrets, ospreys, eagles, haws, snakes and an assortment of fish and birds. As we embarked on this journey, we knew we needed to strike a balance between our desire to be one with nature and the need to protect and preserve it for generations to come.”
“The boardwalk, regional park and the Potomac National Scenic Trail also connect people to history,” Principi said. “Whether you want to explore a trail used by Native Americans or Civil War embankments at Leesylvania State Park, or the Colonial and Civil War history at Rippon Lodge, you’ve come to the right place. We have something for everyone.”
Principi also said that the boardwalk will serve as an educational tool for county students as part of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Science in the Park program. “The step downs along the trail will allow our school students to engage with the aquatic life and learn about ways humans can both harm and heal our environment. Interpretive panels will highlight delicate ecology and encourage conservation.”
Virginia Senator Jeremy McPike also spoke at the opening and talked about the importance of the county’s wetlands “Places like this connect to the Chesapeake Bay and they connect all through Virginia. Places like this are the foundation for a healthy ecosystem everywhere. This is just a perfect place where we can experience it firsthand. This is an important place to teach our future generations how important it is to treat our environment right and enjoy it.”
Tanya Gossett, the superintendent Prince William Forest Park, said National Trails Day was meant to raise awareness about the importance of trails to communities and a day to encourage everyone to venture out on a trail close to home. She said the boardwalk and the new regional park helped in the effort to get people out to the Potomac National Heritage Scenic Trail. “It winds its way from the historic town of Occoquan through two national wildlife refuges, four county parks, one state park and one national park, and to this string of pearls, today we add the stunning Neabsco Creek Boardwalk.”
