Octagonal Bath| Hampi | Karnataka | The World Heritage Site
Hampi- Dampi
5th Video of Series
Not to confuse this with the Octagonal Water pavilion you may find on the main road to Hampi. This structure, as the name indicates, is a gigantic bathing area made in the shape of an Octagon. The bath shelter is designed with an octagonal shaped platform at the middle and an encircling pillared veranda around it. The circular section between the veranda and the platform is the water (now empty) area. To the west of it you can spot the ruined bases of numerous palaces.
This is at a bit isolated location though pretty well connected by a mud road. At about a kilometer or so in a northeast direction from the Chandrashekara temple you can spot its polygon structure. Most probably a makeshift thorny gate closes the mud road (what you see in the picture is the Saraswathi temple nearby).
Just jump over it and proceed. No one would question you as this has been made by the local flower farmers to protect their flowers being eaten by the wandering cattle! For all that matter a lone farmer (the only pathfinders available at times) can direct you to the location.
The same trail you taken from Chandrashekara temple to here continuous its way eastwards. This winding mud path along the edges of the fields can lead you to Srinagarada Hebbagailu (the huge gateway to the citadel), located behind the Elephant Stables.

Nearby Lotus Palace - Hampi,KARNATAKA...Part (5)
UNDER GROUND SHIVA TEMPLE - This is one of the oldest temples in Hampi. This Siva temple was built below the ground level for some reason and most time the temple core is submerged under water. BAND TOWER - This two-storied hexagonal structure has its narrow stairways at the northeast side. The lower portion has arched walls joining the pillars around. The upper story has alternate arch and rectangular windows. The dome is multi layered like that of the temples. VIRA HARIHARA MUSEUM - The original entrance to the compound is at the eastern side of the wall. You can trace the two large rectangular structures breaking the eastern wall leaving a 3-meter wide gateway. This is the highest structure in this section you can access, it's a vantage point to survey the plan of this locality.. LOTUS PALACE - The shape of the structure is what brought it the name. Basically this is a two storied structure with an open base floor the sidewalls are having tall arched windows. The upper floors have balconies with arched windows. Hook like structures are made on to the wall close to the windows to hang curtain. The arches of the ground floor are recessed and ornate. The decorations and architecture is a curious mix of Hindu and Islamic styles. ELEPHANT STABLES - Elephant Stable is a major tourist attraction. This long building with a row of domed chambers was used to 'park' the royal elephants. There are 11 domed tall chambers; some of them are inter- connected. The center one is specially decorated and big. BHIMA'S ARCH - The gate got its name from the legendary Bhima of the Hindu epic Mahabaratha. A figure of Bhima -- the strongest of the five Pandavas brothers -- is carved on the gate. Also there are carvings of Draupadi (Pandava's wife) tying her hair. Slaying of Kichaka who tried to molest Draupathi is depicted next to it. QUEEN'S BATH - This Tis a rectangular building with the long veranda inside approaching a square tank of 6 feet depth from all sides. This is considered as the Royal bath, where the king and his wives had their baths. It's believed that water in the tank was filled with perfumes and fragrance flowers for the royal family OCTOGONAL TANK - This structure, as the name indicates, is a gigantic bathing area made in the shape of an Octagon. The bath shelter is designed with an octagonal shaped platform at the middle and an encircling pillared veranda around it. The circular section between the veranda and the platform is the water (now empty) area.

Hampi ഹംപിയിലേക്ക് ഒരു യാത്ര
Located in Karnataka near the modern-era city of Hosapete, Hampi's ruins are spread over 4,100 hectares (16 sq mi) and it has been described by UNESCO as an austere, grandiose site of more than 1,600 surviving remains of the last great Hindu kingdom in South India that includes forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures and others. Hampi predates the Vijayanagara Empire; there is evidence of Ashokanepigraphy, and it is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Puranas of Hinduism as Pampaa Devi Tirtha Kshetra. Hampi continues to be an important religious centre, housing the Virupaksha Temple, an active Adi Shankara-linked monastery and various monuments belonging to the old..In the sacred centre near the southern banks of the Tungabhadra River and close to the Vitthala temple complex, are gateways and a monument now called the King's Balance.[117][118] The latter is similar to those found at the entrances of South Indian Hindu temples for the tula-purush-dāna or thulabharam ceremonies in which a person gives a gift by weight equal to, or greater than, their body weight.[117][118][119]
The Vijayanagara rulers built forts, fortified gateways and watchtowers after their dynasty was founded from the ruins of war and for security from repeated raids and invasion. Hindu-style corbelled arches are the most common gateways and watchtowers in Hampi.[note 4] One such gateway is located south-east of Ganagitti Jain temple;[120] it incorporate a central barbican wall designed to entrap and confuse a stranger aiming for a surprise, while frequent visitors knew the three changes of direction before the gateway. These functional Hindu monuments are identifiable by a legendary Hindu character incorporated into them, such as of Bhima of the Mahabharata's Pandava fame. Another such gate is found on the north-east road to Talarighat Hindu monument and the Vitthala temple.[120][121]
The Hampi site has over 1,600 surviving ruins—mostly Hindu—spread over a wide area.[7] Other significant monuments include a temple near the octagonal bath for Saraswati, a Hindu goddess of knowledge and music; a temple in the suburbs for Ananthasayana Vishnu; an Uddana Virbhadra temple for Shiva and Vishnu; a shrine for Kali, the fierce form of Durga unusually shown holding a ball of rice and a ladle;[122] an underground temple in the royal centre; a Sugriva cave temple;[123] the Matanga hill monuments; the Purandaradasa temple dedicated to the scholar-musician famed for the Carnatic music tradition; the Chandrashekhara temple for Shiva near the Queen's bath monument; and the Malyavanta hill dedicated to Rama-Sita-Lakshmana and Shiva. The Malyavanta hill features several shrines including the Raghunatha temple and a row of Shiva lingas carved in stone.[124]

When you hear the name Hampi, you will immediately think of the beautiful architecture of the sprawling city of Vijayanagar surrounding the famous ruins. The capital of the Vijayanagara Empire and a site that splendidly displays the Hoysala tradition of architecture, Vijayanagar or Hampi is a rhapsody in stone.
