Vannes is the capital of the Département Morbihan on the French Atlantic coast and within its mighty walls hides a historical architectural treasure.Half-timbered houses that date back to the 15th and 17th centuries form the medieval centre of Vannes and can be found on the square dedicated to Henry The Fourth and also in many nearby lanes. Several charming facades lie closely packed together and create a fascinating historic setting. The fine old buildings are an important part of the town’s economy and in recent years have attracted hordes of tourists from around the world. The Cathédrale Saint Pierre towers above the historic rooftops of the fine old town. The architecture of the church dates back to the 13th century but its facade was restored much later in Neo Gothic design. The entrance to the northern nave leads into the church’s generously decorated interior most of which was built in the 15th century. The construction of the cathedral took almost six hundred years and thus contains the architecture of several historic epochs. Vannes is full of history and picturesque sights – well worth a visit!

Vannes is a walled town in the Brittany region of northwest France. Its well-preserved old town is characterized by narrow cobbled streets and medieval gates. At its heart, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Vannes blends Romanesque and Gothic styles, while Place des Lices square is lined with colorful timber-framed houses. The harbor, to the south, features restaurants and boats that cruise the Gulf of Morbihan.
Vannes is located on the Gulf of Morbihan at the mouth of two rivers, the Marle and the Vincin. It is around 100 kilometres (62 miles) northwest of Nantes and 450 km (280 mi) south west of Paris. Vannes is a market town and often linked to the sea. The name Vannes comes from the Veneti, a seafaring Celtic people who lived in the south-western part of Armorica in Gaul before the Roman invasions. The region seems to have been involved in a cross channel trade for thousands of years, probably using hide boats and perhaps Ferriby Boats.
The Gare de Vannes railway station offers connections to Quimper, Rennes, Nantes, Paris and several regional destinations. Vannes has a small airfield in the village of Monterblanc, called Vannes-Meucon airport, or Vannes – Golfe du Morbihan airport. It used to be a military airport, but it is now dedicated to general aviation aircraft. It belongs to Vannes Agglomeration community, the group of cities gathered around Vannes, and the main users of this airfield are Vannes flying club, the local ultralight aviation club, and Vannes school of skydiving.

In 14th century Vannes became capital of Brittany and it remained capital till nowadays.
With it's beauty, Vannes is a real magnet in the region of Brittany. The city is very nice on the north side of the Gulf of Morbihan, including it's port with promenade de la Garenne and the old city with St. Pierre Cathedral, beautiful old gates: (Porte Saint-Jean, Porte Prison, Porte Poterne, Porte Calmont ), city walls... The narrow streets in the pedestrian area of the old town, will surely attract your eyes. There you can enjoy walking and shopping between the high, old, medeival houses with interested roofs and windows that are richly decorated with flowers.
One of the most beautiful and famous old house in Vannes, is Maison de Vannes, on the corner of the Rue Noë and Place Valencia, with the facade images of Vannes and his wife.

The walls of Vannes are the fortifications erected between iii th and xvii th centuries to protect the city of Vannes in the department of Morbihan in France . Founded by the Romans at the end of the i st century BC. AD during the reign of Augustus , the civitas Venetorum is forced to hide behind a castrum at the end of iii th century , even though a major crisis shakes theRoman empire . This first enclosure remains the only protection of the city for more than a millennium. It was at the time of Duke John IV , at the end of the xiv th century , the city wall was rebuilt and extended southward to protect the new districts. The duke wants to make Vannes not only a place of residence but also a stronghold on which he can rely in case of conflict. The surface of the intramural city is doubled and the deputy deputy to the new enclosure its fortress of the Hermine .
The wars of the League of the late xvi th century forced the city to develop several bastions polygonal (Gréguennic, Upper Madness, Brozilay, Notre Dame). The spur of the Garenne is the last defensive work built in Vannes around 1630 . From 1670 , King Louis XIV sold piece by piece the elements of the ramparts to finance his wars. The gradual establishment of the protection of the ramparts as historical monuments between 1912 and 1958 follows. For several decades, the city undertakes the restoration and development of the parts of the ramparts which it owns. Keystone heritage Vannes and tourist element par excellence, the ramparts of Vannes are among the few urban fortifications that still exist in Britain .
At the end of iii th century , under the threat of Germanic peoples , the Emperor Probus authorizes Darioritum , like all cities of litus saxonicum to build fortifications. The ancient town of Vannes is surrounded by ramparts on the hill of Mené and abandons the hill of Boismoreau which formed the heart of the city. After the war, Jean IV , son of Jean de Montfort, appointed Duke of Brittany by the Treaty of Guérande , had the walls repaired and enlarged to the south to encompass the suburbs of the city. The area of the closed city then increases from 5 to 13 hectares.

What a beauty! Overlooking the Golfe du Morbihan, Vannes is one of the unmissable towns of Brittany. Spectacular fortifications encircle Vannes' meandering alleys and cobbled squares, and lead down to a sparkling marina lined with cafes and townhouses. The city still preserves much of its medieval atmosphere, but it's a long way from being a museum piece. It has a lively bar and restaurant scene year-round, and it's also an excellent base for exploring the glittering island-studded Golfe du Morbihan and nearby neolithic sites.
The name Vannes comes from the Veneti, a seafaring Celtic people who lived in the south-western part of Armorica in Gaul before the Roman invasions. Wheat that apparently was grown in the Middle East was part of this trade. At about 150 BC the evidence of trade (such as Gallo-Belgic coins) with the Thames estuary area of Great Britain dramatically increased.

Jardin des Remparts is very well maintained gardens that compliment the City Walls & Ramparts and the section in front of the Chateau are spectacular ! A really nice walk just as dusk was falling & mist was rising off the river. With nearly three-quarters of its preserved walls and despite the destruction of several segments xix th century , the city of Vannes pregnant is one of the best preserved in Britain. The protection and enhancement of the ramparts take many forms, from numerous restoration projects to the holding of exhibitions (Tour du Connétable, maritime photography festival ...), including the installation of the Cultural Institute of Brittany and numerous associations in the castle of Hermine , fireworks , light projection and organization of events at the foot of the ramparts (book fair, historical festivals , Arvor Festivals , photo exhibition of Sea).

A visit to Rennes, the historic capital of Britanny. The city has a long history going back to Gallic and Roman times. It was one of the major cities of the independent Duchy of Brittany. This duchy eventually became part of the Kingdom of France in 1547 after centuries of struggles. Because of its strategic importance, Rennes was heavily fortified during the Middle Ages. Some traces of Rennes' walls remain. The old town also possesses a large number of historic timber-framed houses.

Exploring Dinan - Brittany, France
Dinan captures medieval character with charm, and very little tourist hype. The buildings, bastions and churches are genuine, and have been authentically restored. Some of these buildings date from the 13th century. Large segments of the city walls remain, and can be explored via a path around the town.
We stayed at the bottom of town, at the river Port. You can also stay in the upper town area - either way there are lots of ups and downs when you explore this town, but the sights are worth the climb either way.
Dinan is a walled Breton town and a commune in the Côtes-d'Armor department in northwestern France. Its geographical setting is exceptional. Instead of nestling on the valley floor like Morlaix, most urban development has been on the hillside, overlooking the river Rance. The area alongside the River Rance is known as the port of Dinan and is connected to the town by the steep streets Rue Jerzual and its continuation outside the walls the Rue de Petit Fort.

Saint-Thégonnec Parish Close Ossuary, Brittany France
The Breton region of Finistere is known for its enclose paroissials - or Parish Closes. The Parish Close is an area enclosed by a wall that surrounds a church and other architectural elements that could include a monumental gateway, porch sanctuary, ossuary (place where bones are stored and revered), relic chapel, fountain, and a high cross known in Brittany as a Calvary.
The Parish Close is a repository of some of the most exquisite religious art in Europe. I visited several of these under the guidance of Brittany expert and author, Wendy Mews in 2016.
The ossuary at Saint-Thégonnec is named for Notre Dame after the Virgin Mary. The ossuary is a separate building within the Parish Close and serves as a crypt for notables. One end of the building is completely occupied by a collection of eleven lifesized figures carved out of oak by Jacques Lespagnol in 1702. Ten figures are gathered around the figure of the dead Jesus Christ. Each figure has a unique expression showing their grief at the death including three angels.

Brittany in the rugged west of France features picturesque old towns, castles and fortresses plus austere mediaeval cathedrals. Nostalgia and romantic harbour villages still exist here and it is also a land of menhirs and fishermen.Rennes is the capital of the region and it is here that our journey through Brittany begins. It is a small town in which both mediaeval and classical buildings stand side by side. In 1720 a disastrous fire that raged for seven days destroyed a number of historic houses. Several crooked, partly renovated frame-work houses are situated in the alleys of the old town, their carved windows and oriels create a medieval atmosphere. Thirty two kilometres south is Vitré, a picture postcard town with a city wall, narrow lanes and a castle. English troops besieged the town for many years until the lords of the castle finally paid a large ransom for their freedom. Le Mont Saint Michel with its historic buildings is located on an eighty metre high granite mound and is like something from a fairytale. Powerful fortifications surround the small town and the abbey at the top of the rock. Due to its unique location and architectural splendour this picturesque village is often referred to as the Wonder Of The Occident. Dinan is a small enchanting French town on the banks of the Rance is one of the most beautiful and well preserved mediaeval towns in Brittany. The western part of France has many faces and Brittany truly is a land of myths, castles, fishing villages and historic old towns.

Spectacular Time Lapse Dam Removal Video | National Geographic
October 28, 2011 — The White Salmon River in Washington state is flowing again as the nearly 100-year-old Condit Dam was disabled with explosives Wednesday. The reservoir draining took about 2 hours. Further demolition is scheduled in 2012. The event is a significant milestone for river restoration and dam removal nationwide.
