The Familiar Clacking Sound
Chinese wooden clogs also pronounced as “muji” in Mandarin. It is a very old type of footwear that is made from wood. It is very comfortable to wear even it has a flat and hard wood surface. Older generation often wear it to keep their feet clean and dry, especially wearing it in the kitchen to prevent slippery. Sadly, Chinese clogs seem to have been left behind as time goes by. In Ipoh, there’s only one couple making the clogs.

The origins of this site specific work lie in the interactions of different cultures and the curiosity of what those interactions might look like when coexisting in the same time and space.
The main elements considered for this piece were traditional Chinese clogs, Mexican costumes, and the Swedish statue of Nils Ferlin. These visual elements were very important in the development of each situation and the overall theme of the piece.
Various motifs of images and sounds bring to life the history of Nils Ferlin, utilizing the outside atmosphere of Karlstad´s main city square.
Our creative process is based in the contemporary field, with improvisation, partnering work, and tasks related to the cultural aspects involved.
We feel attracted to transform the space and habitat, giving another intention to the statue and changing its immobility. Nils will dance again, alongside us.
Working in a space outdoors provides the opportunity to connect easily with the audience. Everybody is a guest, making this a special celebration.
Through several performatic events, the cultural shock is going to happen. This intersection of Malaysia, Mexico and Sweden celebrates the coincidental present, the different pasts, and the unknowing future.
