Oltrarno, Florence: Come for the Views, Stay for the Gelato
August 31, 2018 / VLOG NO. 138 – Oltrarno in Florence is a great place to visit for the panoramic views overlooking the city. I had a whole day to explore and while I did enjoy the center of town, it was just too busy and too crowded with the endless stream of tourists. Make sure you climb up to the top of the Piazzale Michelangelo to see a gorgeous panorama of the surrounding Tuscan landscape, and be sure to grab a gelato and sample of Italy's best desert!

Street Art in Artisan Neighborhood Oltrarno I Florence Italy
Today, we explored the south side of the Arno River - the Oltrarno neighborhood - which has a lot of amazing street art. The french artist Clet, for example, is famous for putting stickers on street signs in the area, which you can se many places. In general, so many of the houses and buildings have incredible facades and wall art. Definitely worth checking out, if you're into art and culture! :)
If you're planning to go here though, keep in mind that parking is a nightmare and can be very expensive. However, depending on where you stay in Florence, driving by car can still be preferable to taking the bus. For us, taking the bus just took way too long and even though it was hard to find parking spaces, we still prefered to take our car.

Medieval Towers of Oltrarno
The Oltrarno district of Florence is best known for its artisans, but it's also the best place to see the city's medieval towers some of which date back to the 11th century. Many of the towers were levelled off or shortened. LdM News went to visit them.

TheFlorentine's Marco Badiani recruited by KLM for short film
Being in the international public eye as the city's longest-running English-language newspaper has its perks. When KLM's iFly magazine was looking for someone to star in their short film dedicated to Florence, they called us. The guide would spend two days with a troupe, showing KLM flyers and readers the best of the city, focusing on less touristy areas, artisans, art and food.
Thrilled to be asked, we gave them our boss, Marco Badiani, director of The Florentine. Who better to show people around than a bona-fide Italian with international flair. It doesn't hurt that he is over six feet tall and well dressed, too. Marco showed the troupe a good time, ate lampredotto, walked all over the Oltrarno and discussed Medici history earlier this fall, and finally the result is live.

Nice area to stay in -- Oltrarno district (try around Piazza Santo Spirito) but you can't go too wrong. Make sure you have air conditioning if visiting in the summer. Horto Convento is a beautiful choice :

For those who really want to know the true and picturesque Florence, then a trip to the area Oltrarno is a must moving away from the classic tours and itineraries which take you to Piazza del Duomo - Piazza della Signoria - Ponte Vecchio and Piazza della Repubblica.
When the Florentines say ”Oltrarno” (or “Diladdarno”) they intend the whole area on the other side of the Arno River (the side opposite of the river to the Duomo). This area is also known as the historic district of Santo Spirito and San Frediano, and even today it is still inhabited by many native Florentines, even if it is often an area of choice by foreigners for its authentic atmosphere and lively quarters. You can call it a Florentine rive gauche or left bank: the Oltrarno is the meeting place of excellence for intellectuals, artists and bohémiens.
Though you will find it animated during the day with markets, passing tourists and students of all ages, Piazza Santo Spirito really comes to life starting in the evening with the ”movida” (the nightlife), filling up with both Florentine locals and visitors, creating an interesting and lively mix, sometimes even just a bit too much.
Piazza Santo Spirito was founded in the second half of the 1200’s. It was built to welcome the faithful that came to pray together with the Augustinian friars who had built a convent with a church dedicated to «Santa Maria d'Ognissanti e allo Santo Spirito» This church eventually became known simply as “Chiesa di Santo Spirito”, for which the square is named.
It is impossible to miss the splendid Basilica di Santo Spirito as you enter into the square. Built on a design by Filippo Brunelleschi in 1444, the Basilica was the last masterpiece by this celebrated architect. At the time of his death the project was passed over to Antonio Manetti, Giovanni da Gaiole and Salvi d’Andrea, who finished the church by the end of the 1400’s.
