MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS - WikiVidi Documentary
Marjory Stoneman Douglas was an American journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, she became a freelance writer, producing over a hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass , which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Its impact has been compared to that of Rachel Carson's influential book Silent Spring . Her books, stories, and journalism career brought her influence in Miami, enabling her to advance her causes. As a young woman, Douglas was outspoken and politically conscious of the women's suffrage and civil rights movements. She was called upon to take a central role in the protection of the Everglades when she was 79 years old. F...

SUMMARY
=======
The environment of Florida in the United States yields an array of land and marine life in a mild subtropical climate. This environment has drawn millions of people to settle in the once rural state over the last hundred years. Florida's population increases by about 1,000 residents each day. Land development and water use have transformed the state, primarily through drainage and infill of the wetlands that once covered most of the peninsula.
Much of Florida consists of karst limestone veined with water-filled caves and sinkholes, which provide homes to many species of aquatic life, some unique to particular Florida locations. As urban and suburban development have increased over the last decades, demand for groundwater has also risen, resulting in damage and drying out of portions of the cave system. This has led to ground subsidence as dry caves collapse, threatening property as well as ecosystems.Restoration of the Everglades has long been recognized as an environmental priority in the state. In 2000, Congress passed the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan, a $7.8 billion, 30-year project aimed at preservation and restoration of the region and its unique combination of environments.
By 2018, 30% of the land area of the state was in conservation.

SUMMARY
=======
The Walt Disney World Resort, also called Walt Disney World and Disney World, is an entertainment complex in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, in the United States, near the cities Orlando and Kissimmee. Opened on October 1, 1971, the resort is owned and operated by Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, a division of The Walt Disney Company. It was first operated by Walt Disney World Company. The property, which covers nearly 25,000 acres (39 sq mi; 101 km2), only half of which has been used, comprises four theme parks (consisting of Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Disney's Hollywood Studios), two water parks, twenty-seven themed resort hotels, nine non-Disney hotels, several golf courses, a camping resort, and other entertainment venues, including the outdoor shopping center Disney Springs.
Designed to supplement Disneyland, in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by Walt Disney in the 1960s. The Florida Project, as it was known, was intended to present a distinct vision with its own diverse set of attractions. Walt Disney's original plans also called for the inclusion of an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT), a planned community intended to serve as a test bed for new city-living innovations. Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, during construction of the complex. Without him spearheading the construction, the company built a resort similar to Disneyland, abandoning the experimental concepts for a planned community. Magic Kingdom was the first theme park to open in the complex, in 1971, followed by Epcot (1982), Disney's Hollywood Studios (1989), and Disney's Animal Kingdom (1998).
Today, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with average annual attendance of more than 52 million. The resort is the flagship destination of Disney's worldwide corporate enterprise and has become a popular staple in American culture.

Webinar: Mobility Plans and Mobility Fees: Planning and Funding 21st Century Mobility
Recorded on Nov. 16 by the APA Florida Broward County Section
1.5 CM credit. Add credit here:
Recent changes made by the Florida Legislature have taken a carrot and stick approach to transportation concurrency. On one hand, they have provided local governments throughout Florida the opportunity to plan for a land use and transportation system best suited to meet the needs of their community. On the other, they have substantially clamped down on the ability of local government to time, regulate and impose mitigation requirements on new development. Further, in many urban areas, adding roadway capacity is no longer feasible or desirable.
Thus, local governments throughout Florida are exploring Mobility Plans and Mobility Fees as an alternative to concurrency and road impact fees and exploring creative 21st Century ways to provide mobility through means other than adding road capacity. Learn how autonomous vehicles, car, ride and bicycle sharing, golf carts, kayaks, cycle tracks and multi-use trails that accommodate walking, bicycling and other 21st Century approaches are being integrated into Mobility Plans and how Mobility Fees can be used to assist with funding these alternative approaches to Mobility.
Speakers:
- Debbie Love, AICP, Director of Planning, Public Relations and Outreach at Keith and Schnars
- Jonathan B. Paul, AICP, Principal at NUE Urban Concepts, LLC
