We're spending the next few days exploring Scotlands largest island and trying to find the best things to do in Lewis and Harris. We took a tour in England with Rabbies last year also and loved it. So we're back to check out a new country all together. Watch last years series here —
Safe to say that Scotland has completely blown us away - the Isle of Lewis and Harris is stunning! It's a shame more people don't get out to Lewis and Harris when they travel to Scotland though and focus on Isle of Skye instead.
This is our first time in Scotland so all we had to go by was the experience of friends, we'd been told it was going to shock us in the best way possible. They were right. The beaches in Lewis and Harris would probably be considered the best thing to do in our book, not only are they covered in white sand, long and beautiful but they remind us a lot of New Zealand.

A Guide To Island Hopping in Scotland
Island hopping is a great way to experience the offshore gems and secret spots that Scotland has to offer – whether you have a week or a weekend to spend here, the islands won’t disappoint.
Scotland is famed for its staggering mountains, beautiful lochs, and a variety of gems to explore, but, did you know that our islands are magical and otherworldly? Scotland has over 790 islands, each unique in their own way. With incredible natural beauty, dramatic seascapes and magical atmosphere, you’ll never want to leave island life behind.
Our islands are split into a few groups – Inner Hebrides, Outer Hebrides, Shetland, and Orkney.
Navigating across these bucket list-worthy islands is easier than you may think. Regular ferry connections run from the mainland to the islands on the west and north coasts of Scotland, as well as between the islands themselves. Some ferries allow you to take your car so you can continue exploring when you’re there.
You can even fly to various islands from the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Or why not fly from island-to-island to save time travelling?
Our islands have more to show than you can fit into a day – so why not stay over? There’s plenty of accommodation options on offer – from cosy cottages on the waterfront and eco-friendly self-catering lodges, to quaint campsites, caravans and B&Bs – but make sure you book ahead!

On the west coast, enjoy the untouched beauty of the Isle of Jura, let your inner adventurer out and try windsurfing on the Isle of Tiree, or uncover the turbulent history at the ancient abbey on the Isle of Iona.
If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, the waters off the Isle of Coll are a great place to spot giant basking sharks, and even if you’ve never been there, you’re probably already familiar with Skye – it’s one of the most photographed, and talked about, of the Scottish islands.
The Outer Hebrides are perfect if you’re looking for crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches. Or hop further afield to Orkney and Shetland to tick these magical places off your bucket list. Places to see in ( Stornoway - UK )
Stornoway is a town on the Isle of Lewis, in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. Stornoway is home to Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (the Western Isles Council) and a variety of educational, sporting and media establishments. Observance of the Christian Sabbath (Sunday) has long been an aspect of the island's culture. Recent changes mean that Sunday on Lewis now more closely resembles Sunday on the other Western Isles or the mainland of Scotland.
Stornoway is also the public transport hub of Lewis, and buses run to Point, Ness, Back and Tolsta, Uig, the West Side, Lochs and Tarbert, Harris. These buses are provided by the Comhairle and several private operators as well as some community-run organisations.
Suggestions for the possibility of an undersea tunnel linking Lewis and Harris to the Scottish mainland were raised in early 2007. One of the possible routes, between Stornoway and Ullapool, would be over 40 miles (60 km) long and hence become the longest road tunnel in the world.
Stornoway Airport is located next to the village of Melbost, 2 miles (3 km) away from the town itself. From here services operate to Aberdeen, Benbecula, Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow, with flights from Flybe franchisee Loganair & Eastern Airways. The airport is also the base of an HM Coastguard Search & Rescue Sikorsky S-92 helicopter, and was previously home to RAF Stornoway. In 1898, the Hebridean Light Railway Company was proposed, with a terminus at Stornoway, but the line was never constructed.

Gerrannan Blachouse village -Isle of Lewis - Scotland
The buildings were generally built with double wall dry-stone walls packed with earth and wooden rafters covered with a thatch of turf with cereal straw or reed. The floor was generally flagstones or packed earth and there was a central hearth for the fire. There was no chimney for the smoke to escape through. Instead the smoke made its way through the roof.
The blackhouse was used to accommodate livestock as well as people. People lived at one end and the animals lived at the other with a partition between them. Although this is now a museum you can also stay in the Blackhouse's as they are now self catering houses.

Old Photographs Stornoway Isle Of Lewis Outer Hebrides Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. This Scottish town was founded by Vikings in the early 9th century, under the name Stjórnavágr. This town, and what eventually became its present day version, grew up around a sheltered natural harbour well placed at a central point on the island, for the convenience of people from all over the island, to arrive at the port of Stornoway, either by family boat or horse drawn coach for ongoing travel and trade with the mainland of Scotland and to all points south. In the mid 19th century, the ownership of Stornoway, and by extension the Isle of Lewis, passed from the MacKenzies of Seaforth to Sir James Matheson. In 1918, Matheson sold the island to William Lever, 1st Viscount Leverhulme. Notable people born in Stornoway include; Colonel Colin Mackenzie, born 1754, died 8 May 1821, who was a Scottish army officer in the British East India Company who later became the first Surveyor General of India. He was a collector of antiquities and an orientalist. He surveyed southern India, making use of local interpreters and scholars to study religion, oral histories, inscriptions and other evidence initially out of personal interest and later as a surveyor. He was ordered to survey the Mysore region shortly after the British victory over Tipu Sultan in 1799 and produced the first maps of the region along with illustrations of the landscape and notes on archaeological landmarks. His collections consisting of thousands of manuscripts, inscriptions, translations, coins and paintings were acquired after his death by the India Office Library and are an important source for the study of Indian history. Sir Alexander Mackenzie, or MacKenzie, born 1764, died 12 March 1820, who was a Scottish explorer. He is known for his overland crossing of what is now Canada to reach the Pacific Ocean in 1793. This was the first east to west crossing of North America north of Mexico and preceded the Lewis and Clark expedition by 10 years.

Lewis Chessmen Discovered Isle Of Lewis Outer Hebrides Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of the story of the Lewis Chessmen discovered on Isle Of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. The Lewis chessmen, Norwegian: Lewisbrikkene; Scottish Gaelic: Fir-Tàilisg; Scots: Lewis chesmen, or Uig chessmen, are named after the bay where they were found, They are a group of distinctive 12th century chess pieces, along with other game pieces, most of which are carved from walrus ivory. Discovered in 1831 on Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland They may constitute some of the few complete, surviving medieval chess sets, although it is not clear if a set as originally made can be assembled from the pieces. When found, the hoard contained 93 artifacts: 78 chess pieces, 14 tablemen and one belt buckle. Today, 82 pieces are owned and usually exhibited by the British Museum in London, and the remaining 11 are at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

We've spent the past 3 days exploring Lewis and Harris, a ridiculously beautiful area of Scotland, on a tour with Rabbies. Today's main attractions are the Callanish Standing Stones and Doune Broch.
The Callanish Stones are legit older than the pyramids, older than Stonehenge and you can just walk right up and touch them when you visit Scotland! The Callanish Circle is one of the more popular tourist attractions on the Isle of Lewis yet there was still very few people there. Both Lewis and Harris continue to impress us.
Our first stop was Doune Broch, considered part of the wider Callanish attractions it was an amainzing first stop on our last day with Rabbies - the views were amazing as we've come to expect from both Lewis and Harris either way.
