The 2019 Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards
The Anisfield-Wolf Awards recognize books that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and human diversity. For 84 years, the distinguished books earning Anisfield-Wolf prizes have opened and challenged our minds. Cleveland poet and philanthropist Edith Anisfield Wolf established the book awards in 1935, in honor of her father, John Anisfield, and husband, Eugene Wolf, to reflect her family’s passion for social justice. Presented by the Cleveland Foundation, it remains the only American book prize focusing on works that address racism and diversity.
The awards ceremony was held on Thursday, September 26, 2019, in the KeyBank State Theatre of Playhouse Square in downtown Cleveland.

Nov. 6, 1873 Cecil Mack, The Charleston
Cecil Mack (November 6, 1873, Portsmouth, Virginia – August 1, 1944, New York, New York) was an American composer, lyricist and music publisher.
Born as Richard Cecil McPherson in Portsmouth, Virginia, (his birthdate is also given as 1880 and 1883, and an 1876 date is shown by his World War I Draft Registration card, as referenced above, and the 1900 Federal Census, but an 1891 Navy Enlistment Record and the 1880 Federal census both point to an 1873 birth year) Richard attended the Norfolk Mission School and Lincoln University in Pennsylvania (class of 1897) before leaving to go to New York City where the 1900 Federal Census lists his occupation as a stenographer. Mack started writing song lyrics, starting with Good Morning, Carrie in 1901. He co-founded the Gotham-Attucks Music Publishing Company in May 1905, in New York City; it was likely the first black owned music publishing company. In July 1906, an article in the New York Age refers to Mack as the company's secretary and treasurer and general business director. In 1907 he wrote the lyrics for the musical The Black Politician. In 1925 he co-wrote the book for the musical Mooching Along. Mack also formed a choir, the Southland Singers, that year. In 1931 he co-wrote the music for the musical Rhapsody in Black.
His obituary observed that Not even Irving Berlin exceeded the output of this talented New York Negro. His songs were as American as Stephen Foster's --one or two of them may be remembered as long--and were typically representative of the pre-radio era when fortunes were made over the 10-cent-store counters. Cecil Mack's songs were pure fun and never had an off-color line. He was married to Dr. Gertrude Curtis, a pioneering African-American dentist who had an office in Harlem. They had no children.
The Charleston is a jazz composition that was written to accompany the Charleston dance. It was composed in 1923, with lyrics and music by Cecil Mack and James P. Johnson, who first introduced the stride piano method of playing.
The song was featured in the American black Broadway musical comedy show Runnin' Wild, which had its premiere at the New Colonial Theatre in New York on October 29, 1923. The music of the dockworkers from South Carolina inspired Johnson to compose the music. The dance known as the Charleston came to characterize the times. Lyrics, though rarely sung (an exception is Chubby Checker's 1961 recording), were penned by Cecil Mack, himself one of the most accomplished songwriters of the early 1900s. The song's driving rhythm, basically the first bar of a 3 2 clave, came to have widespread use in jazz comping and is still referenced by name by musicians. Harmonically, the song features a five chord ragtime progression (I-VI7-II7-V7-I).
The Charleston is one of many works from 1923 that will enter the public domain in the United States in 2019.

18. Fighting the Revolution: The Big Picture
The American Revolution (HIST 116)
Today's lecture concludes Professor Freeman's discussion of the four phases of the Revolutionary War. America's victory at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 marked the end of the third phase of the war, and led to a turning point in the conflict: France's decision to recognize American independence and enter into an alliance with the fledging nation. Although the British made one final attempt at reconciliation in 1778 with the Conciliatory Propositions, they were rejected by the Continental Congress. The fourth and final phase of the war lasted from 1779 to 1781, as the British Army focused its attention on the American South. The British seized Charleston and South Carolina, and defeated the Continental Army in a series of battles. But with the help of the French fleet, Washington was able to defeat Cornwallis's army at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781. Peace negotiations to end the Revolutionary War began in Paris in June of 1782.

World Shocked at Enduring Racism, Gun Violence in US
Often the target of U.S. human rights accusations, China wasted little time returning such charges following the shooting at a historic black church in South Carolina that left nine people dead. Elsewhere, the attack renewed perceptions that Americans have too many guns and have yet to overcome racial tensions. Some said the attack reinforced their reservations about personal security in the U.S. — particularly as a non-white foreigner — while others said they'd still feel safe if they were to visit. Especially in Australia and northeast Asia, where firearms are strictly controlled and gun violence almost unheard of, many were baffled by the determination among many Americans to own guns despite repeated mass shootings. A frontier nation like the U.S., Australia had a similar attitude toward firearms prior to a 1996 mass shooting that killed 35. Soon after, tight restrictions on gun ownership were imposed and no such incidents have been reported since.
