The Pacific Union Club, Nob Hill, San Francisco CA
The Pacific-Union Club is a private social club located at 1000 California Street in San Francisco, California, at the top of Nob Hill. It was founded in 1889 as a merger of two earlier clubs: the Pacific Club (founded 1852) and the Union Club (founded 1854).
The clubhouse was built as the home for the silver magnate James Clair Flood. The former Flood Mansion is located in the Nob Hill neighbourhood. It was designed by Willis Polk. It is considered the first brownstone constructed west of the Mississippi River. Along with the Fairmont Hotel across the street, these were the only structures in the area to survive the San Francisco earthquake and fire of 1906.
This club figured prominently in the history of the west coast of the United States. Many prominent citizens have been active among its membership. To this day, the club's membership remains all-male per its charter.

Huntington Park is a park in Nob Hill right next to Grace Cathedral. The park was originally the site of a mansion, lived in by Arabella Huntington until the 1906 earthquake destroyed the home. Huntington deeded the land to the city in 1915. The has a big fountain in the middle of it.

Alfred Hitchcock made several movies with scenes in San Francisco — with lavish backdrops like the Flood Mansion in Nob Hill, Grace Cathedral, Mission Dolores, Union Square, Palace of the Legion of Honor and of course the Golden Gate Bridge. One of his most memorable films shot here is Vertigo, made in 1957. Starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, there are enough familiar scenes in this murder mystery to create many a walking tour. But hats off to San Francisco City Guides and the true movie buffs who take you on the journey down the sidestreets and back streets you might otherwise miss — and for keeping it free of charge.
On many a Sunday afternoon, crowds gather at the fountain in Huntington Park off of Sacramento, for a chance to follow along to catch Madeleine's apartment building, the site of the Podesta Baldocchi Floral shop, or the site of the exclusive Pacific Union Club. I always wanted to know where the pet shop filmed in the opening of The Birds sits — and now I know it was Maiden Lane, but not the brown building I would have suspected.
The storytellers include incredibly knowledgeable guides --Robert Munzer, Rory O'Connor, and Jay Sherwin who truly know their stuff.
It's also worthy of note that this June 14th, Kim Novak, the star of Vertigo, will receive the San Francisco Cinematic Icon Award. Also -- Saturday, April 7 at 2:00 pm at the Golden Gate Club, 135 Fisher Loop on the Main Post in the Presidio of San Francisco, contributors to a new book - The San Francisco of Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo: Place, Pilgrimage and Commemoration will be on hand for a signing. Hitchcock made his mark in San Francisco and his work and legacy live on.

Jewel Box House - NOB HILL - Palace Hill, San Francisco CA
It was more than 100 years ago that four of San Francisco's most wealthy and powerful railroad and industry magnates had their pick of more than 43 hills on which to build their mansions. Charles Crocker, Mark Hopkins, Collis Huntington and Leland Stanford selected Nob Hill in the heart of the city for its stunning views of the bay. It eventually became known as the Hill of Palaces because of their palatial mansions.
The 1906 earthquake levelled most of the homes, but Nob Hill's grand reputation has carried over to modern times. Built-in 1913, shortly after the big quake, one mini-mansion that became known as the Jewel Box home still stands as a tribute to San Francisco's high society at the turn of the last century. The current owner, Elisa Stephens, president of the Academy of Art College, strove to restore the home to its original grandeur.
One of the easiest decisions Stephens made when she bought the Jewel Box house four years ago was to revive its turn-of-the-century splendour. The challenge was matching the restoration to photos of the classically detailed interior. I wanted to restore it to its jewel-like quality. I wanted the interior to be livable and comfortable yet traditional because this house requires elegance, Stephens says.
The six-story, 5,200-square-foot home was designed by George A. Shastey, the original designer of the Fairmont Hotel's interiors. He called it a Petit Palais and emphasized details like the intricate crown mouldings, traceried grillwork, gilded vaults and leaded glass ceilings. Viewed from Huntington Park across the street, the home still looks like a mini-mansion, resting quietly amid the giant apartment buildings that flank it.
Stephens says it was originally built by a bachelor to house his mistress, and there is allegedly a tunnel running underneath California Street that connects the home to the old James Flood mansion, now the Pacific Union Club.
Photographs of Shastey's details inspired to Stephens to re-create the grandeur but with a modern flair. Union Square, Nob Hill, and Chinatown - Urban Hiker SF
The Union Square, Nob Hill, and Chinatown Tour explores 3 of San Francisco’s most central and historic neighborhoods in 3 ½ miles and 2 ½ hours.
The hike starts right in Union Square, now famous for shopping, but once a gathering place for celebrating Union victories in the Civil War.
From here, you’ll take in the sights of Nob Hill—the Fairmont Hotel, The Pacific Union Club, Grace Cathedral, and the Cable Car Museum—learning about San Francisco before and after the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906.
From Nob Hill, you head into Chinatown, visiting places like the Chinatown Gate, the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory, and the location where Gold Rush was announced to the world.
We take a quick trip to North Beach to visit Jack Kerouac Alley and City Lights Bookstore and visit the Transamerica Pyramid and Transamerica Redwood Park—all before arriving back at Union Square.
