Juneau, Alaska
Recorded June 19, 2007.
Juneau is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the panhandle of Alaska. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-Alaska Territory was moved from Sitka. Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. As of the 2000 census, the City had a population of 30,711. Downtown Juneau sits at sea level below steep mountains about 3,500 to 4,000 feet high. Atop these mountains is the Juneau Icefield, a large ice mass from which about 30 glaciers flow; two of these, the Mendenhall Glacier and the Lemon Creek Glacier, are visible from the local road system.
This video begins as we sail into Juneau's harbor on the Sapphire Princess. After disembarking the ship I take the tramway to the top of Mount Roberts for fantastic views of the Gastineau Channel and the city of Juneau. Next I journey out to Mendenhall Glacier before returning to the city and sailing away.

The Grizzly Bear: (aka Brown Bear) can range 6-7 feet in length, weigh 200-850 lbs, live approximately 20-25 years and can travel at 35 mph! Their hair coloration is usually darkish brown but can vary from very light cream to black. The long guard hairs on their backs and shoulders often have white tips and give the bears a grizzled appearance. Grizzlies range 6-7 feet in length, weigh 200-850 lbs, live approximately 20-25 years and can travel at 35 mph! In North America there were at one time a population of grizzly bears that numbered nearly 50 thousand. Now, although the population in the lower 48 states is down to around one thousand, in Alaska the population is still estimated at over 30 thousand. Featured in this program: Stan Price State Wildlife Sanctuary: Explore the bear population at the mouth of Pack Creek on the eastern shore of Admiralty Island about 30 miles south of Juneau, Alaska. Bush pilot & wilderness guide Butch Laughlin shares his knowledge and insights into Alaskan Grizzlies and former Pack Creek resident, Stan “The Bear Man” Price. A broad estuary and tidal flat at the mouth of Pack Creek is used frequently by bears for travel, feeding, and resting. Humpback Whales: These magnificent creatures create quite a spectacle near Point Adolphus, arguably the best place in Southeast Alaska to watch humpback whales on their annual migration to and from Mexico. Denali National Park: Not only home to 39 species of mammals, 167 species of birds and 10 species of fish, it also provides Grizzly Bears with a smorgasbord of feasting opportunities including ground squirrels, moose or caribou calves, carrion, small plants and wild blueberries!

Ketchikan Shore Excursion Visit to Alaska Raptor Center and Creek Street
This is video from our excursion to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, Raptor Center, and Totem poles. In this video we pick up where we left off after our nature walk through the Tongass rainforest. We watched a native Alaskan tribesman carving a totem pole, visited an historic lumber mill, and then the Alaska Raptor Center. This was the first stop on our Northbound Alaskan cruise sailing out of Vancouver in July. This was one of the excursions offered by the Norweigan Cruise ship. We learned a lot on this tour, the guide was quite knowledgable and shared a lot of information, overall a great experience! The video of the Tongass Rainforest nature walk is here:
