Palais Equitable
The Palais Equitable is a mansion in Stock-im-Eisen-Platz (now part of Stephansplatz) in the Innere Stadt of Vienna, Austria that was built in the 19th century for The Equitable Life Assurance Society of the United States and that incorporates the Stock im Eisen on one corner.
The building is on the site of five small medieval buildings that were demolished in 1856--86, partly in order to expand Kärntner Straße. It was designed by Andreas Streit and constructed in 1887--91. It is one of the few palaces or mansions in Vienna never to have been an aristocratic residence.
The Palais Equitable has a richly detailed façade featuring American eagles. The Stock im Eisen, enclosed in glass, is in a niche on the Kärntner Straße corner of the building, and bronze reliefs by Rudolf Weyr on the main doors depict its history. The remainder of the ornamentation is by Viktor Oskar Tilgner and Johann Schindler.
The interior is also extremely sumptuous: marble from Hallein and granite from Saxony were used for the dramatic stairway and the vestibule, and the glass-covered interior courtyard is completely clad in tile and maiolica. (The stairway was apparently intended to be adaptable for access to a future subway.) A painting on the ceiling of the lobby and the stucco ornamentation on the second floor are by Julius Victor Berger.
Wilhelm Beck & Söhne, providers of uniforms to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, had its shop in the building, and the United States consulate was located there.
The Palais Equitable was damaged in World War II but was restored in 1949. The entrance area was renovated by Rüdiger Lainer in 1997. Today the building houses offices of various companies and organizations including the Austrian division of Sal. Oppenheim, and a retail outlet for Aurgarten Porcelain.
GRABEN, VIENNA - travel shorts
The Graben (German: Trench) is one of the most famous streets in Vienna's first district, the city centre. It begins at Stock-im-Eisen-Platz next to the Palais Equitable and ends at the junction of Kohlmarkt and Tuchlauben. Another street in the first district is called Tiefer Graben (deep ditch). It is crossed by Wipplinger Straße by means of the Hohe Brücke, a bridge about ten metres above street level.
Vienna (Wien) Austria (Österreich) in HD - The Universal
I shot this while I was in Vienna. Some sites are Stephansdom, The New Palace (Neue Hofburg), Parliament, Thaliastrasse. Vienna (Wien) is quite a beautiful city in Austria. It was a little humid in the August weather and that surprised me, being from Texas and all.
My favorite thing in Vienna was the old classic street trams. They were uncomfortable but really cool to ride in. Hope you enjoy and get to see Vienna (Wien) for yourself sometime.
According to Tyramde Whisperwind:
0:04 Vienna Subway. From the type and the open plattform style with wooden roof I suppose U6 along the Gürtel.
0:25 U6 metro station in the northern part of town along the Gürtel in direction Siebenhirten.
0:47 Tram stop with night line stop along the Gürtel. This narrows it down to the lines 49, 43 and 41. In addition to the information before I would suggest Nr. 43at stop Alser Straße.
1:01 Austrian Parliament. Bad people (I would never dare) would point out, that the statue of the goddess of wisdom Athene is outside the parliament and looking away from it.
1:06 Heldenplatz (Heroes Square). Statue of Archduke Charles.
1:18 Neuer Trakt (New/Modern Part) of the Hofburg, Imperial Residence. Finished in 1913. Statue of Prince Eugene of Savoy.
1:25 Ring at night. I suppose nearby the Burgtheater.
1:38 I suppose Stock im Eisen Platz - St. Stephens Cathedral behind cameraman. Palais Equitable in the background.
1:45 Kärntner Straße, pedestrian area with touristy spots between State Opera and St. Stephens Cathedral.
1:48 Tombstone on St. Stephens Cathedral. Some of them where situated around the cathedral (the construction was outside of the city walls when it got built and richer citisens could leave their tombstone there). To my knowledge there were no tombs around the cathedral.
1:51 St. Stephens Cathedral
2:08 Palais Equitable (not a major attraction)
2:11 St. Stephens Cathedral with its Square. The main building is gothic (14th century), the main entrance is romanic (1250). Its called Riesentor (Giants Gate) as people once found dinosaur bones in the area, thought they were from giants and fixxed it at the gate to show it around.
2:14 Various tombstones
2:17 St. Stephens Cathedral with Square. You can visit the Southern Tower for a look over the city (600 steps), the Northern Tower to see the Pummerin, a giant bell (elevator) as well as take a tour with a guide in and outside the cathedral for some history or a tour in the catacombs underneath it.
2:36 Wurstlprater, entertainment section of the Prater (which is a huge green area in the middle of the city - like Central Park in NY). At the entrance you can find the oldest Ferrys Wheel (1897).
2:47 St. Stephens Square - Cathedral on the right.
2:50 St. Stephens Cathedral

Vienna is Austria's primary city, with a population of about 1.8 million (2.6 million within the metropolitan area, nearly one third of Austria's population), and its cultural, economic, and political centre. It is the 7th-largest city by population within city limits in the European Union. Until the beginning of the 20th century, it was the largest German-speaking city in the world, and before the splitting of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in World War I, the city had 2 million inhabitants. Today, it has the second largest number of German speakers after Berlin. Vienna is host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC. The city is located in the eastern part of Austria and is close to the borders of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. These regions work together in a European Centrope border region. Along with nearby Bratislava, Vienna forms a metropolitan region with 3 million inhabitants. In 2001, the city centre was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In July 2017 it was moved to the list of World Heritage in Danger. Apart from being regarded as the City of Music because of its musical legacy, Vienna is also said to be The City of Dreams because it was home to the world's first psycho-analyst – Sigmund Freud. The city's roots lie in early Celtic and Roman settlements that transformed into a Medieval and Baroque city, and then the capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is well known for having played an essential role as a leading European music centre, from the great age of Viennese Classicism through the early part of the 20th century. The historic centre of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including Baroque castles and gardens, and the late-19th-century Ringstraße lined with grand buildings, monuments and parks. Vienna is known for its high quality of life. In a 2005 study of 127 world cities, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked the city first (in a tie with Vancouver, Canada and San Francisco, USA) for the world's most liveable cities. Between 2011 and 2015, Vienna was ranked second, behind Melbourne, Australia. For eight consecutive years (2009–2016), the human-resource-consulting firm Mercer ranked Vienna first in its annual Quality of Living survey of hundreds of cities around the world, a title the city still held in 2016. Monocle's 2015 Quality of Life Survey ranked Vienna second on a list of the top 25 cities in the world to make a base within. The UN-Habitat has classified Vienna as being the most prosperous city in the world in 2012/2013. The city was ranked 1st globally for its culture of innovation in 2007 and 2008, and sixth globally (out of 256 cities) in the 2014 Innovation Cities Index, which analyzed 162 indicators in covering three areas: culture, infrastructure, and markets. Vienna regularly hosts urban planning conferences and is often used as a case study by urban planners. Between 2005 and 2010, Vienna was the world's number-one destination for international congresses and conventions. It attracts over 6.8 million tourists a year.
Vienna - Iconic Sites: walking in Stephan Platz - Video Blog by Simona Cochi
Vienna - Iconic Sites: walking in Stephan Platz
The Stephansplatz is a square at the geographical centre of Vienna, Austria. It is named after its most prominent building, the Stephansdom, Vienna’s cathedral and one of the tallest churches in the world. Before the 20th century, a row of houses separated Stephansplatz from Stock-im-Eisen-Platz, but since their destruction, the name Stephansplatz started to be used for the wider area covering both.
To the west and south, respectively, run the exclusive shopping streets Graben (literally «ditch») and Kärntner Straße («Kärnten» is the German for Carinthia). Opposite the Stephansdom is the Haas-Haus, a piece of striking modern architecture by Hans Hollein.
Although public opinion was originally skeptical about the combination of the mediaeval cathedral and the glass and steel building, it is now considered an example of how old and new architecture can mix harmoniously.
Stock im Eisen
The Stock-im-Eisen («staff in iron») is located at the corner of Kärntner Straße and Graben in a niche on the corner of the Palais Equitable.
It is a section of tree trunk into which hundreds of nails have been hammered since the Middle Ages, and which is ringed by an iron band closed by a large padlock. The earliest written mention of it dates to 1533 and it is the subject of legends about the Devil.

My Youtube Channel Manifesto
This editorial project has been conceived on my return to Milan (September 2017) after a year and a half of work and research in different european fashion and design cities and in some new luxury retail outposts. London, Bicester, Oxford, Manchester, Liverpool, Copenhagen, Dublin, Vienna, Ibiza they all gave me he opportunity of discovering different brands, retail trends, customer care approaches, promotional tecniques, dominant styles and aesthetic standards.
Anyhow I want to express myself in this global language.
My main goal is to strengthen and use foreign contacts to support and make foreing people better understand the alchemy of Italian style and its local and international protagonists.
The aim of my vblog is to explain with my reportage how Fashion, Design and Lifestyle are so important to develop and animate the two districts: Quadrilatero and Gae Aulenti.
I will be covering some of the iconic spots of Milan along with Fashion and Design weeks.
We will discover together the mechanisms and concepts about the Entertainment Design and the New Entertainment Retail. I hope you will enjoy it.
p.s. as a Vblogger I am a beginner!

Raft Project Unterleiten Hollenstein
ENGLISH
Drawing Studies made of a Pine Cone by students (ages 14-16years) from Fachschule Unterleiten Hollenstein were the initial stages of the Raft Project.
It endeavoured to harness a new combination of old elements with new,and using the river to reconfigure, and come up with its alternatives to what the students present to it on its banks. The underlying aim was to demonstrate alternative approaches to design thinking
and in particular pattern making with its traditional use and understanding.
From nature the students took a Pine Cone, studied its form, content, function, and structure. Then re-constructed,abstracted,and designed patterns and shapes.
Then rectangular pieces of wood, were prepared and the students final
designs, implemented the use of nails. The symbolic use,was to compare the middle of the nineteenth century (or earlier) - tradition of generations of skilled craftspeople who embarked on a journey after their apprenticeship was complete. Using hand forged nails as business cards with their initials, hammered into various Stock’ or Posts
in many towns throughout Austria, including the one in the centre of Waidhofen and is a special document of the past. There is one in Vienna on the corner of the magnificent Palais Equitable at the corner of the Graben and Karntner Strasse .
This final part of the project was to launch their own ‘rafts’ back to the Ybbs river,at Waidhofen and see how the river’s ebb and flow, might play
with their designs.Tied together, using bowlines and half hitches knots, in the best formation in terms of floatation and balance- ‘Muster der Natur’
was successfully launched off the banks of the river 22 March 2019 at 10.00 GMT. Lat.47.951 Long. 14.744
Fachschule Unterleiten Hollenstein offers some unique features for any artist in residence.
Its history is long and well established in the community, but apparently out of step with the current educational thinking of the present government.
There is a move on to now close this unique school and approach to educational apprenticeship,in order to keep up with’current thinking’ on education in Austria.
Conclusion
One of the underlying aims of the project was to generate within the students a sense of their own leadership and independence.
The commitment to organise and complete their project,to be proud of something they achieved for themselves and their school in Hollstein.
