PALAZZO TRENTINI - LA CASA DELL'AUTONOMIA puntata n. 4
Trento: The Painted City (EN) - Trentino-Alto Adige - Italia.it
The City of Trento has always been considered as a bridge between the German and Latin cultures.
Trento's historic center bears numerous traces from the Renaissance, including its historic Piazza del Duomo with the 18th-Century Fountain of Neptune, the Palazzo Pretorio, the Rella Residences and the Duomo (the Cathedral of San Vigilio), which was the seat for the historic Council of Trent.
The city's history is strongly tied to the figure of the Prince-Bishop Barnardo Clesio. The Castello del Buonconsiglio, where he resided, is a magnificent and scenographic structure. On its interior, it is possible to observe beautiful frescoes realized by some of the best artists of the age, while the suggestive Eagle Tower (the Torre dell'Aquila), is a breathtaking masterpiece done in the Gothic style.

Trento, Italy: Things to Do - What, How and Why to visit Trent
If you are planning to visit #Trent (#Trento), in Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the city, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organise your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Trent city.
In this video:
WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Buonconsiglio Castle, the Cathedral of Saint Vigilius, Palazzo Pretorio, Palazzo delle Albere and MUSE, the museum of science and natural history.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily-tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Trent city and tips for nearby attractions.
Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Trent city, with his rich historic city center.
WHAT
Before the Romans, Trent was a Celtic village. It was conquered by the Romans in the late 1st century BC. Romans gave their settlement the name Tridentum as a tribute to the Roman god Neptune. (Actually, the origin of the name is not clear, it could refer to 3 small hills that rise around Trento, called Doss.) Tridentum became an important stop on the Roman road that led from Verona to Innsbruck. In the 16th century, the city was the location of the famous “Council of Trent”. Formerly part of Austria-Hungary empire, it was annexed by Italy in 1919.
With almost 120,000 inhabitants, Trento is one of the largest city.
What to see:
- Duomo (Cathedral of Saint Vigilius) is a Gothic cathedral of the twelfth century, built on top of a late-Roman basilica.
- Palazzo Pretorio, next to the Duomo, dates back to the 12th century, with a bell tower.
- Buonconsiglio Castle includes a museum and the remarkable Torre dell'Aquila.
- Palazzo delle Albere is a Renaissance villa next to the Adige river built around 1550, and now host a modern art museum.
- MUSE is the museum of science and natural history, planned by Renzo Piano and opened in 2013.
WHY
Trento why go here? Thy to visit this city?
As you have seen, the city offers a rich historical heritage, in a comfortable city setting and a panoramic alpine landscape.
But Trento offers a lot of attractions around the city:
Arriving in Trento by car, you will notice vineyards as far as the eye can see; so why don’t visit one of them?
In 40 minutes you can be in Garda lake and in just over an hour you can visit Brenta Dolomites and the village of Madonna di Campiglio (watch my videos on both of them)

TRENTO - THE BUONCONSIGLIO CASTLE
OUR TRAVEL THROUGH ITALY CONTINUES!
THE BUONCONSIGLIO CASTLE IS ONE OF THE MAIN MONUMENTS IN THE PROVINCE OF TRENTO AND ONE OF THE BIGGEST FORTRESS IN NORTHERN ITALY. HISTORIC RESIDENCE OF THE PRINCE-BISHOPS UNTIL 1803 IT'S MADE OF SEVERAL BUILDINGS SURROUNDED BY PROTECTIVE WALLS. CASTELVECCHIO IS THE OLDEST PART, BUILT IN THE 12TH CENTURY. THE MAGNO PALAZZO IS THE SIXTEENTH EXPANSION IN THE FORMS OF THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE, WANTED BY THE PRINCE-BISHOP BERNARDO CLESIO, WHILE THE BAROQUE-STYLE GIUNTA ALBERTIANA DATES BACK AT THE END OF THE 17TH CENTURY. THE CASTLE IS POPULAR, NOT JUST IN ITALY, FOR THE MANY PLASTERS AND FRESCOS, ESPECIALLY FOR THE FRESCO OF THE LOGGIA OF THE LIONS' YARD, A RENAISSANCE MASTERPIECE PAINTED BY GIROLAMO ROMANINO, WHERE THE SUN CHARIOT IS SURROUNDED BY THE ALLEGORIES TO THE SEASONS, THE SUN AND THE MOON, BIBLICAL, MYTHOLOGICAL, AND ROMAN HISTORY SCENES.
THE EAGLE TOWER
FROM THE LOGGIA BY ROMANINO YOU WALK ACROSS THE HALL ALONG THE PROTECTIVE WALLS UP TO THE EAGLE TOWER AND THE VERY FAMOUS CYCLE OF THE MONTHS, ONE OF THE BEST GOTHIC-STYLE PAINTINGS EVER MADE IN ITALY! ELEVEN FRAMES SEPARATED BY LITTLE COLUMNS MASTERFULLY SHOW LIFE AND SOCIETY JUST AS HABITS AND TRADITIONS OF PEOPLE IN THE LATE 13TH CENTURY. THE DAILY LIFE OF THE ARISTOCRATIC PEOPLE AND THE WORK OF THE FARMERS IN THE SURROUNDINGS OF TRENTO ARE SHOWN IN DETAIL AS THE DIFFERENT SEASONS OF THE YEAR GO BY.
THE BUONCONSIGLIO CASTLE WITNESSES MANY IMPORTANT HISTORIC EVENTS, AS YOU WILL SEE IN THE ROOM WHERE ARE THE PORTRAITS OF THE MANY BISHOPS OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL PRINCIPALITY OF TRENTO, AND EVEN MORE AFTER IT BECAME PART OF THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE AND THE BUONCONSIGLIO CASTLE BECAME A BARRACKS. RIGHT HERE DURING THE I WORLD WAR THE THREE IRREDENTISTS CESARE BATTISTI, FABIO FILZI AND DAMIANO CHIESA WERE DECLARED TRAITORS AND EXECUTED FOR BEING AUSTRIAN CITIZENS WHO VOLUNTARILY FOUGHT IN THE ITALIAN ARMY.
Benvenuti a TRENTO CITTA’ DEL NATALE
