Along with the old town, the region, historically was often depicted as Ekamra Khetra (Temple City). With the diverse ranges of heritage resources, it showcases significant sacred cultural landscape components which have evolved with the support of available natural resource base and cultural trigger.
It is a confluence of Hindu, Buddhist and Jain heritage boasting of some of the finest Kalingan temples. With many 6th-13th century CE Hindu temples, which span the entire spectrum of Kalinga architecture, Bhubaneswar is often referred to as a Temple City of India. With Puri and Konark it forms the Swarna Tribhuja (Golden Triangle), one of eastern India's most visited destinations.
Most of the older temples in Bhubaneswar were built between 8th and 12th centuries, under Shaiva influence. The Ananta Vasudeva Temple is the only old temple of Vishnu in the city. In 1568, the Karrani dynasty of Afghan origin gained control of the area. During their reign, most of the temples and other structures were destroyed or disfigured
The Lingaraja temple is the largest temple in Bhubaneswar. The central tower of the temple is 180 ft (55 m) tall. The temple represents the quintessence of the Kalinga architecture and culminating the medieval stages of the architectural tradition at Bhubaneswar. critic and historian rated the temple as one of the finest examples of purely Hindu temple in India
The temple is active in worship practises, unlike most other temples in Bhubaneswar and Shiva is worshipped as Harihara.

Rameshwar temple, Bhubaneshwar
The first temple on the way to Lingaraja temple near State museum, Bhubaneshwar
Brahmeswara Temple (ब्रह्मेश्वर मंदिर) | 11-12th century AD | Bhubaneswar, Odisha
Architecturally, the temples of Bhubaneshwar can be resolved into three broad styles as rekha, pidha and khakhara. Most of the temples of the first two orders have two main components--the sanctum, with a convex curvilinear spire, locally known as the deul, also called bada deul (the big temple) or the rekha deul (temple of which the spire gives the optical impression of one continuous line), which towers over the sanctum having the deity image; and an entrance porch or assembly hall called jagamohana, or pidha deul (a temple of which the root is made up of horizontal platforms or pidhas), characterized by a stepped pyramidal roof.
The bigger temples may have two to three of these porches--usually a nata-mandira (dance hall) and bhoga-mandapa (hall of offering). A khakhara style is distinguished by a barrel elongated roof, called khakhara--the local name of a variety of pumpkin-guard. Over the khakhara are placed kalasas or amlas flanked by lions.
The outside of temples are profusely decorated with sculptured relief broadly classified as - hieratic deities, human beings, geometrical, birds and animals and the floral patterns. The iconography includes the divine images, representation of planets, dikpalas and their female counterparts.
More than 500 temples that remain in Bhubaneswar, some significant, of the early period (7-9th century AD) are the Parasuramesvara and Vaital Deul; the middle period (10-11th century), the temple such as the Muktesvara, the Rajarani and the Lingaraja; and the later period (12-13th century), the Ananta Vasudeva, the Meghesvara and the Yamesvara, are architecturally typical and impressive. Most of these are active places of worship.

Located on the east coast, Odisha (Formerly Orissa), also known as The Soul of India, is a mystical land where the hoary past and the modern today form a harmonious blend - where ancient temples mingle with modern five star hotels. Odisha is filled with interesting destinations and just deciding on what to do and where to go can often be a daunting task. A land filled with awe inspiring monuments, thousands of master craftsmen and artists, numerous wildlife sanctuaries, stunning natural landscapes. Odisha is located between the parallels of 17.49'N and 22.34'N latitudes and meridians of 81.27'E and 87.29'E longitudes. It is bounded by the Bay of Bengal on the east; Madhya Pradesh on the west and Andhra Pradesh on the south. It has a coast line of about 450 kms. It extends over an area of 155,707 square kms. Accounting about 4.87 of the total area of India.
On the basis of homogeneity, continuity and physiographical characterstics, Odisha has been divided into five major morphological regions: The Odisha Coastal Plain in the east, the Middle Mountainous and Highlands Region, the Central plateaus, the western rolling uplands and the major flood plains. It is the modern name of the ancient kingdom of Kalinga, which was invaded by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka in 261 BCE. The modern state of Orissa was established on 1 April 1936, as a province in British India and consisted predominantly of Oriya speakers. Odisha is the 9th largest state by area in India, and the 11th largest by population. Oriya is the official and most widely spoken language, spoken by three quarters of the population. Odisha has a relatively unindented coastline and lacked good ports, except for the deepwater facility at Paradip, until the recent launch of the Dhamara Port. The narrow, level coastal strip, including the Mahanadi river delta supports the bulk of the population.
The landscape of Odisha is dotted with a large number of temples. The temples of Odisha conform to the Indo Aryan Nagara style of architecture, with distinctive features specific to this region. The best known of these are the Lingaraja temple at Bhubaneshwar, Jagannath Temple at Puri and the Sun Temple at Konark. The temples of Odisha exhibit a majestic grandeur. Odisha is also well known as a Buddhist and Jain pilgrimage destination. North-east of Cuttack, about 10 km from Bhubaneshwar, there are Buddhist relics and ruins at the three hilltop complexes of Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves, which still bear witness to Buddhism's fruitful tryst with this region until well into the 13th century.
