LISBON: Parque das Nações - newest district (5/5) Portugal HD
Parque das Nações (English: Park of the Nations) is the newest district in Lisbon/Lisboa, having emerged from an urban renewal programme leading to the World Exhibition of Lisbon 1998, also known as Expo'98.
The Gare do Oriente is one of the main transport hubs of Lisbon for trains, buses, taxis and the metro. Its glass and steel columns are inspired by Gothic architecture, lending the whole structure a visual fascination (especially in sunlight or when illuminated at night).
The area is pedestrian-friendly with new buildings, restaurants, gardens, the Casino Lisbon, the Vasco da Gama Shopping Center, the FIL building (International Exhibition and Fair), the Camões Theatre, cable car, as well as the Oceanário de Lisboa (Lisbon Oceanarium), the second largest in the world.
To tour the area, visitors can jump on a toy train that passes by the main attractions every twenty minutes, or ride the cable car that runs the full length of the site, parallel to the river, while giving commanding views along the way.
The Marina Parque das Nações features 600 berths and modern infrastructures, a river pier for cruises or historical vessels and an exclusive pontoon prepared to receive nautical and on land events.

In the distance, the Vasco da Gama Bridge over the river Tagus (Tejo) can be seen. It is the longest bridge in Europe (including viaducts), with a total length of 12.3 kilometres (7.6 mi), including 0.8 kilometres (0.50 mi) for the main bridge and 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) in viaducts. It was built to alleviate the congestion on Lisbon's 25 de Abril Bridge, and eliminate the need for traffic between the country's northern and southern regions to pass through the capital city.
The bridge was opened to traffic on 29 March 1998, just in time for Expo 98, the World's Fair that celebrated the 500th anniversary of the discovery by Vasco da Gama of the sea route from Europe to India.

Lisbon is an illuminated city. The almost constant presence of sunshine and the River Tagus transforms the Portuguese capital into a mirror of a thousand colours - highlighting the city’s unique architecture and beauty.
There are so many things to see and do in Lisbon that visitors have access to a wide array of different experiences.
As we flight through Lisbon - whose history spans back thousands of years – we find streets filled with heritage monuments, and characteristic neighbourhoods where the city first developed and can still be experienced at its most genuine level.
The Nations Park, widely known even to English speaking visitors as Parque das Nacoes, is not a garden proper, but rather an area of Lisbon. The area was dramatically transformed in the late 20th century in view of accommodating the events and exhibitions occasioned by the Expo’98 World Exhibition, such that at present the Nations Park is one of the most exquisite places where tourists can spend time in Lisbon.
The area stretches in the very proximity of the Tagus Estuary.

Today is our third full day in Lisbon, Portugal. Imo and Izzy are having a mummy/daughter day. We head out on foot from our Airbnb accommodation in the Bairro Alto down to the Chiado Metro station, stopping to admire the scenery and peer into shop windows as we go.
Imo demonstrates how to check your travelcard credit with the Metro ticket machine and shows the way to the Lisbon Oceanarium, via Oriente Metro station.
As usual, we get a little bit lost on the way, but eventually find ourselves in the spacious, airy and rather magnificent Parque das Naçoēs - former home of Expo 98. We take in sights, sounds and a bit of a picnic before finally heading into the Oceanarium itself.
I made a mistake regarding the year I did my exchange - I believe it was a year later than I guessed - 1997.
Check out our next upload for the trip to the oceanarium. There was too much footage for one vlog, today, and we didn't want to skimp on the beautiful and enchanting scenes from inside the aquarium simply for the sake of brevity ; ¬)

Em 1992 Portugal venceu o Canadá sendo-lhe atribuída a organização da Expo 98.
Logo nesse ano vim conhecer o espaço onde seria construída.
A partir de 1993 quando adquiri uma câmera de filmar passei a registar o antes, a evolução dos trabalhos de desmantelamento e a construção.
Convertidos os filmes para digital estou a editá-los para que todos possam saber como era este espaço e como evoluiu até à construção da zona como hoje a conhecemos.
Convido-os a assistir e ver o trabalho gigantesco que foi levado a cabo pela Parque Expo.

LISBON - Parque das Nações ( Park of the Nations )
The Park of Nations is the neighborhood that was born in the northeast of the city, on the bank of the river, in what was the space of the former Expo 98.
To get there, we can take the red metro line to Oriente Station. The Oriente station is today the most important of the train stations in Lisbon and the great railway junction of Portugal.
Then we can enjoy the modern architecture of buildings such as the Atlantic Pavilion, the Vasco de Gama shopping center or the Oceanarium. There is also a cable car that offers beautiful views of the area, but that leads nowhere.
