Tram Ride to Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral MSC Preziosa Marseilles France
Tram Ride to Notre Dame de la Garde Cathedral MSC Preziosa. We were in Marseilles today, as part of a cruise ship stop. From the cruise ship port, we took the free port shuttle to the port gates, and then walked to the city center of Marseilles where we bought tickets for the petite train (8 Euros per adult, 4 per child). The tram took us on a scenic ride and brought us here. Wonderful!
Notre-Dame de la Garde (literally Our Lady of the Guard), is a Catholic basilica in Marseille, France. This Neo-Byzantine church was built by the architect Henri-Jacques Espérandieu on the foundations of an ancient fort. The fort was located at the highest natural elevation in Marseille, a 149 m (490 ft) limestone outcrop on the south side of the Old Port of Marseille. It is an important local landmark and the site of a popular annual pilgrimage every year on Assumption Day, August 15.
The basilica was consecrated on June 5, 1864, replacing a church of the same name that was built in 1214 and restored in the 15th century. Charles II d'Anjou mentioned it as a guardpost in the 15th century,[1] but the present basilica was built on the foundations of a 16th-century fort erected by Francis I of France to resist the 1536 siege of Marseille by the Emperor Charles V. It consists of a lower church or crypt in the Romanesque style, carved from the rock, and an upper church of Neo-Byzantine style decorated with mosaics. A square 41m bell tower (135 ft) topped by a 12.5m belfry(42 ft) supports a monumental 11.2 m (27 ft) statue of the Madonna and Child made of copper gilded with gold leaf.[2]
The green limestone from the Florence area that was used to build the basilica was discovered to be sensitive to atmospheric corrosion. An extensive restoration took place from 2001 to 2008, including work on mosaics damaged by candle smoke and the impact of bullets during the Liberation of France at the end of World War II.
People from Marseille traditionally see Notre-Dame de la Garde as the guardian and the protector of the city. Local inhabitants commonly refer to it as la bonne mère (the good mother).[3]

Marseille Saint-Charles station
Marseille, France | 2007 | Railway station
A RENOVATED STATION WITH A NEW HALL
Client: SNCF (halls and services, square, car parks), Marseille Urban Community (tunnel and urban networks), Département 13 Assembly (bus platform and land acquisition)
Prime Contractor: SNCF Gares & Connexions, AREP / Design office: SETEC, SMM, SIDF / Site organisation and planning: AREP
Site surface: 31 000 m²
Delivery: 2007
Due to its elevated position, Marseille Saint-Charles railway station looked like a XIXth century acropolis, amplified by the monumental staircase built in 1930.
XXth century urbanization cut the station off from its immediate environment. The arrival of the TGV and the launch of the great Euroméditerranée project provided an opportunity to break the station's isolation by redesigning its surroundings and access, while doubling its capacity thanks to the construction of a side wing extending the historical façade, with a similar stone colonnade. The development of retail activities turned the station into a transport exchange and service center open to the neighborhood, giving it a new identity.

Le Petite Train: sightseeing in Marseille with kids
If you are visiting Marseille in France with kids then one of the best ways to see the sights and an epic view of the city is on Le Petit Train. We visited France's second city during our Mediterranean cruise in June 2016. Read about our cruise here:
It was an extremely hot day so we wanted to look around with minimal effort. The fun train was the perfect answer. We took Notre Dame Tour Circuit 1 starting in the Old Port and climbing 162m to Notre Dame de la Garde Basilica. It is said to be the most magnificent building of it kind in Southern France. The tour also takes you past Fort St Nicolas, Palais du Pharo, and along the beautiful sea road.
