Pézenas is a City of Art and History boasting a beautiful heritage: numerous mansions of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, such as the Lacoste mansion, the Malibran mansion and the Alfonce mansion succeed one another. Beautiful paved streets lined with craft workshops cheer up the stroll. Besides, Pézenas is unusual in that it has been Molière's place of residence of in the 17th century.
The House of Art professions, situated in the former consular house, is dedicated to know-how and art professions. At the beginning of June, « Pézenas Sous le Regard de Molière » is a festival during which the old town comes alive through street manifestations.
Pezenas is a town in the Herault department of Languedoc-Roussillon region, north of Agde and 20 kilometres north-east of Beziers in the Val d'Hérault. It is one of my favourite towns in this area and well worth the trip to visit it. Pezenas has a nice attractive old town, unspoiled by modern development, with narrow streets to explore as well as some grand 17th century houses. Its town centre was one of the first in France to be protected as an historic monument.
Look out for the magnificent detail as you amble through the lanes. There are example of lovely stone detail to windows and doors, interesting wrought iron balconies and stone staircases. There are numerous imposing houses from the 16th to 18th centuries including the Hotel Jacques Coeur, the Hotel Carion de Nizas and the Hotel de Lacoste among those to look out for. There is also a well preserved Jewish ghetto in the town dating from the middle ages.
The most important religious monument in Pezenas is the 18th century Collegiale Church of Saint-Jean, above all for the important treasury that it contains. Others include the roman style Church of Saint-Jean-de-Bébian, classified as a historic monument, and the other main church - the Church of Saint-Ursule - also merits a visit.
The town is also reputed for its antique and bric-a-brac shops.
The Tourist Office in Pézenas offers guided tours of the town to help you make the most of a visit. The tourist office itself was once the barbers shop and it was here apparently that Moliere dreamed up some of the characters for his plays. If you are staying in or close to Pézenas during the evening you can wander through the old town and find a number of inviting restaurants to tempt you.
The town is especially proud of its association with Moliere, who brought his troupe to the town on several occasions, and has a monument to commemorate the fact by the reputed sculptor Jean-Antoine Anjelbert. Budding authors seeking inspiration can visit the Museum de Vulliod Saint-Germain where you can even see Moliere's armchair. There is also a Museum of Toys, an Arts and Crafts Centre and an interesting Centre for Architecture and Heritage in Pezenas. Each summer Pezenas plays host to the Mirondela de l'Arte, and music and street entertainment takes over the town. The market day is Saturday in Pezenas.

Pezenas France • A Delightful Village Associated with the Playwright Molièr
Pézenas, France - the delightful 16th century capital of the Languedoc mostly known for its associations with the French playwright Molière
Pézenas was the seat of local Government for the Languedoc during the 16th and 17th centuries. The entire old town, one of the first in France to be protected by the state historic monument department, is rich with hotels particuliers - period mansions - with wonderful wrought iron balconies, stone sculpture and ornate doorways. The interior of the Consular House dates back to 1552 and it is recorded that the consuls of Pézenas met on this site from 1242 until the Revolution in 1789.
Pézenas is a town rich with the sort of good living that the Languedoc is famous for. The Boudet family have been manufacturing berlingots de Pézenas, a unique variety of hard boiled sweet, for many years. Legend has it that the recipe dates back to the time of the medieval fairs. Another specialty, the petit pâté de Pézenas, was brought to the town by Lord Clive of India in 1768. The recipe is proudly kept secret by the town's bakers who to this day almost all produce the famous pâtés.
Pézenas is a town that has always been popular with actors, singers and all manner of performing artists. It was this love of the arts that attracted the famous French playwright Molière to Pézenas back in the mid 1600's. Molière is reputed to have created some of his famous characters in Pézenas in the barber's shop (now the tourist office).
What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especiallly on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!
European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.
The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.
Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

Every year, the delightful small city (or large town) of Pézenas in the Languedoc region of southern France hosts a fascinating fair of the trades. They call it FILM. The fair has booths where students and teachers demonstrate all sorts of artisanship, from boat building to stove carving to theater costume design to hair styling.
