In Penn's Shadow (1680-1720) - Philadelphia: The Great Experiment
For free educational materials, visit our website at historymakingproductions.com/philadelphia-the-great-experiment
Philadelphia celebrates its founder more than any other American city, but who exactly is William Penn? For many, he is a statue atop City Hall, but Penn's busy life reflected an era of chaotic upheaval and conflict. He is at once a radical Quaker, political prisoner, visionary city planner, absent landlord, and a slaveholder. His ideals, contradictions, and ambitions cast a long shadow across American history. This installment of Philadelphia: The Great Experiment explores what it means to live In Penn's Shadow.

VLOG 32: ഫിലാഡൽഫിയ ചുറ്റി കാണാം | Exploring Philadelphia | Malayalam Vlog | Trip Couple
Philadelphia is the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the fifth-most-populous city in the United States, with an estimated population of 1,567,442 and more than 6 million in the seventh-largest metropolitan statistical area, as of 2015. Philadelphia is the economic and cultural anchor of the Delaware Valley-a region located in the Northeastern United States at the confluence of the Delaware and Schuylkill rivers with 7.2 million people residing in the eighth-largest combined statistical area in the United States.
Stop No.1: Panoramic view of the Center City Philadelphia skyline, viewed from Camden, New Jersey, across the Delaware River. Comcast Center.
Stop No.2: The Philadelphia Museum of Art is an art museum originally chartered in 1876 for the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The main museum building was completed in 1928 on Fairmount, a hill located at the northwest end of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway at Eakins Oval. The museum administers collections containing over 240,000 objects including major holdings of European, American and Asian origin. The various classes of artwork include sculpture, paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, armor and decorative arts
Stop No.3: The 72 stone steps before the entrance of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have become known as the Rocky Steps because of their appearance in the triple-Oscar-winning film Rocky and five of its sequels, Rocky II, III, V, Rocky Balboa and Creed, in which the eponymous character runs up the steps to the song Gonna Fly Now. Tourists often mimic Rocky's famous climb, a metaphor for an underdog or an everyman rising to a challenge. A bronze Rocky statue was briefly situated at the top of the steps for the filming of Rocky III. This statue, now located at the bottom right of the steps, is a popular photo opportunity for visitors. The top of the steps offers a commanding view of Eakins Oval, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and Philadelphia City Hall.
Stop No.4: One Liberty Observation Deck, also called Philly From the Top, is an 883 ft (269 m) high observation deck located on the 57th floor of One Liberty Place in Center City, Philadelphia. The observation deck is fully enclosed and offers 360-degree panoramic views of the city from 883 feet above street level, which is the highest public access level and the tallest standing building attraction in Philadelphia as of 2016.
Stop No.5: Philadelphia City Hall, built in 1901 and located at 1 Penn Square, is the seat of government for the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The building was designed by Scottish-born architect John McArthur, Jr., in the Second Empire style, and was constructed from 1871 until 1901 at a cost of $24 million. City Hall was topped off in 1894, although the interior wasn't finished until 1901.

Children in Philadelphia Muslim Society: We Will Sacrifice Ourselves for Al-Aqsa
On April 22, 2019, the Muslim American Society Islamic Center in Philadelphia (MAS Philly) uploaded a video of an Ummah Day celebration to its Facebook page in which young children wearing Palestinian scarves sang: Glorious steeds call us and lead us [to] the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The blood of martyrs protects us… Take us, oh ships… until we reach our shores and crush the treacherous ones… Flow, oh rivers of martyrs! A young girl read a poem praising martyrs who sacrificed their lives for Palestine, and she asked: Will [Jerusalem] be a hotbed for cowards? Another young girl read: We will defend [Palestine] with our bodies… We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque… We will subject them to eternal torture. MAS Philly belongs to the Muslim American Society (MAS), which has 42 chapters in the United States and one in the United Kingdom. MAS' website says that its mission is to move people to strive for God-consciousness, liberty and justice, and to convey Islam with utmost clarity, and that its vision is a virtuous and just American society.

Live Travel News: Carnival Ends European Sailings Plus FAA Refuses to Regulate Seat Size on Planes! Costs cruises is adding 7 new cruise ships in the next 7 years to it overall fleet. Carnival will not sail in europe for the foreseeable future. It will leave the area in the hands of it's other lines namely Cunard, Holland America, Princess, P and O, Costa and Aida. The FAA has decided it does not need to regulate seat sizes on jet planes as they are fine the way they are. All jets must be evacuated in 90 seconds in an emergency. The FAA receives simulations from the aircraft manufacturers which also select the volunteers and video the simulations. No children, infirmed people, obese people or elderly people are used as volunteers for the simulations. Only adults are used. In 1980 the obesity rate in the USA was 15%, today it is 38%. 45% of all adults were overweight in 1960 today 70% are overweight. Seat pitch in 1970 was averaging 35 inches, today Spirit Airlines has a 29 inch pitch. Yuck...

UNCUT: 2019 First Coast Spelling Bee
WJXT, The Local Station hosted the 75th annual First Coast Spelling Bee at Jacksonville University's Terry Theater on Tuesday, Feb. 19.
Modern Times: Camille Paglia & Jordan B Peterson
Dr. Camille Paglia is a well-known American intellectual and social critic. She has been a professor at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (where this discussion took place) since 1984. She is the author of seven books focusing on literature, visual art, music, and film history, among other topics. The most well-known of these is Sexual Personae ( an expansion of her highly original doctoral thesis at Yale. The newest, Free Women, Free Men: Sex, Gender, Feminism, was published by Pantheon Books in March 2017 (
Dr. Paglia has been warning about the decline and corruption of the modern humanities for decades, and she is a serious critic of the postmodern ethos that currently dominates much of academia. Although she is a committed equity feminist, she firmly opposes the victim/oppressor narrative that dominates much of modern American and British feminism.
In this wide-ranging discussion, we cover (among other topics) the pernicious influence of the French intellectuals of the 1970's on the American academy, the symbolic utility of religious tradition, the tendency toward intellectual conformity and linguistic camouflage among university careerists, the under-utilization of Carl Jung and his student, Erich Neumann, in literary criticism and the study of the humanities, and the demolition of the traditional roles and identity of men and women in the West.
A Facebook page is maintained for Dr. Paglia by Pantheon at Penguin Random House in New York:

Calling All Cars: The Long-Bladed Knife / Murder with Mushrooms / The Pink-Nosed Pig
The radio show Calling All Cars hired LAPD radio dispacher Jesse Rosenquist to be the voice of the dispatcher. Rosenquist was already famous because home radios could tune into early police radio frequencies. As the first police radio dispatcher presented to the public ear, his was the voice that actors went to when called upon for a radio dispatcher role.
The iconic television series Dragnet, with LAPD Detective Joe Friday as the primary character, was the first major media representation of the department. Real LAPD operations inspired Jack Webb to create the series and close cooperation with department officers let him make it as realistic as possible, including authentic police equipment and sound recording on-site at the police station.
Due to Dragnet's popularity, LAPD Chief Parker became, after J. Edgar Hoover, the most well known and respected law enforcement official in the nation. In the 1960s, when the LAPD under Chief Thomas Reddin expanded its community relations division and began efforts to reach out to the African-American community, Dragnet followed suit with more emphasis on internal affairs and community policing than solving crimes, the show's previous mainstay.
Several prominent representations of the LAPD and its officers in television and film include Adam-12, Blue Streak, Blue Thunder, Boomtown, The Closer, Colors, Crash, Columbo, Dark Blue, Die Hard, End of Watch, Heat, Hollywood Homicide, Hunter, Internal Affairs, Jackie Brown, L.A. Confidential, Lakeview Terrace, Law & Order: Los Angeles, Life, Numb3rs, The Shield, Southland, Speed, Street Kings, SWAT, Training Day and the Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour and Terminator film series. The LAPD is also featured in the video games Midnight Club II, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, L.A. Noire and Call of Juarez: The Cartel.
The LAPD has also been the subject of numerous novels. Elizabeth Linington used the department as her backdrop in three different series written under three different names, perhaps the most popular being those novel featuring Det. Lt. Luis Mendoza, who was introduced in the Edgar-nominated Case Pending. Joseph Wambaugh, the son of a Pittsburgh policeman, spent fourteen years in the department, using his background to write novels with authentic fictional depictions of life in the LAPD. Wambaugh also created the Emmy-winning TV anthology series Police Story. Wambaugh was also a major influence on James Ellroy, who wrote several novels about the Department set during the 1940s and 1950s, the most famous of which are probably The Black Dahlia, fictionalizing the LAPD's most famous cold case, and L.A. Confidential, which was made into a film of the same name. Both the novel and the film chronicled mass-murder and corruption inside and outside the force during the Parker era. Critic Roger Ebert indicates that the film's characters (from the 1950s) represent the choices ahead for the LAPD: assisting Hollywood limelight, aggressive policing with relaxed ethics, and a straight arrow approach.

Suspense: The Bride Vanishes / Till Death Do Us Part / Two Sharp Knives
Together with the Authorized version and the works of Shakespeare, the Book of Common Prayer has been one of the three fundamental underpinnings of modern English. As it has been in regular use for centuries, many phrases from its services have passed into the English language, either as deliberate quotations or as unconscious borrowings. They are used in non-liturgical ways. For example, many authors have used quotes from the prayer book as titles for their books.
Some examples of well-known phrases from the Book of Common Prayer are:
Speak now or forever hold your peace from the marriage liturgy.
Till death us do part, from the marriage liturgy.
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust from the funeral service.
From all the deceits of the world, the flesh, and the devil from the litany.
Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest from the collect for the second Sunday of Advent.
Evil liver from the rubrics for Holy Communion.
All sorts and conditions of men from the Order for Morning Prayer.
Peace in our time from Morning Prayer, Versicles.
The phrase till death us do part (till death us depart before 1662[5]) has been changed to till death do us part in some more recent prayer books, such as the 1962 Canadian Book of Common Prayer.
References and allusions to Prayer Book services in the works of Shakespeare were tracked down and identified by Richmond Noble (Noble 1935, p. 82). Derision of the Prayer Book or its contents in any interludes, plays, songs, rhymes, or by other open words was a criminal offence under the 1559 Act of Uniformity,[6] and consequently Shakespeare avoids too direct reference; but Noble particularly identifies the reading of the Psalter according to the Great Bible version specified in the Prayer Book, as the biblical book generating the largest number of Biblical references in Shakespeare's plays. Noble found a total of 157 allusions to the Psalms in the plays of the First Folio, relating to 62 separate Psalms—all, save one, of which he linked to the version in the Psalter, rather than those in the Geneva Bible or Bishops' Bible. In addition, there are a small number of direct allusions to liturgical texts in the Prayer Book; e.g. Henry VIII 3:2 where Wolsey states Vain Pomp and Glory of this World, I hate ye!, a clear reference to the rite of Public Baptism; where the Godparents are asked Doest thou forsake the vaine pompe and glory of the worlde..?
More recently, P.D. James used phrases from the Book of Common Prayer and made them into bestselling titles—Devices and Desires and The Children of Men, while Alfonso Cuarón's 2006 film Children of Men placed the phrase onto cinema marquees worldwide.
