Piazza De Ferrari is the main square of Genoa. Located in the heart of the city - and in particular at the ancient district of Portoria -, it is the core business, financial and economic, as well as being the main point of reference on the occasion of the major events of the city life. The square, named after Raffaele De Ferrari, Duke of Galliera, politician and banker, has an irregular shape, due to successive urban interventions, which resulted in the merging of two contiguous areas, urban planning differentiated, as highlighted by the different architectural styles of buildings. It occupies a total area of about 11,000 m². The current appearance of the square takes shape in the first two decades of the twentieth century, with the construction of the three ways that will converge to the east, via XX Settembre (1892-1901), Via Dante and Via Petrarca (1901-1915), and the four large buildings in eclectic style, corporate offices and institutions, built between 1899 and 1923 in the area obtained from the excavation of the hill of St. Andrew. [2] in these contrasts, on the opposite side, the profile of neoclassical buildings made in the first half of the nineteenth century by Carlo Barabino in what was the ancient Piazza San Domenico: the Teatro Carlo Felice (1827) and the Academy building Ligustica (1831). Finally, on the side of the square facing the old town overlooking the side elevation of the Palazzo Ducale and two other historic buildings, dating back to the sixteenth century but remodeled in the nineteenth century. Towards the west, next to the Teatro Carlo Felice, open two other important ways: slightly uphill, in the direction of Piazza Corvetto, the elegant Via Roma, full of shops and boutiques, flanked by the gallery and Mazzini, slightly downhill, with outlet in Piazza delle Fontane Marose, the Via XXV Aprile, Once a Carlo Felice. In the space in front of the theater, where he was once the facade of the church of San Domenico, is the equestrian statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, the sculptor Augustus Rivalta (1893). At the center of the square since 1936 there is the large bronze fountain, designed by architect Giuseppe Crosa of Vergagni and soon became, along with the lantern, one of the main symbols of the city. From the early years of the twentieth century the square is the reference point for measuring distances to other cities and places from Genoa. Although not the largest square in the center of Genoa, is still the main reference point for social and cultural events, such as political rallies and demonstrations and student unions, rock concerts, dance and theater. In some of these occasions was also found at the center of unrest, as happened in June 1960, during the protests against the convening of the congress of the MSI in Genoa, or during the G8 summit in July 2001. On 27 January 1979 there was held a large demonstration on the occasion of the funeral of Guido Rossa, the worker union leader murdered by the Red Brigades three days before the house in the district of Oregina. The square, today almost completely pedestrianized, has regained its former glory after a massive restyling operation, performed particularly on the pavement, on the same fountain and the Palazzo Ducale, on the basis of a renovation project of Bernhard Winkler. Systematic restoration operations were conducted between the nineties and the early years of this decade, the first time on the occasion of the celebrations for the fifth centenary of Columbian discovery of America, and then for the meeting of the G8 in 2001.

Genova Olaszország legnagyobb és a Földközi-tenger második legnagyobb kikötője (Marseille után). Liguria székhelye, a Nyugati- és Keleti- Riviéra találkozásánál fekszik, fontos közlekedési csomópont.
1100-ra Genova önálló városállam lett, névleg a Német-római Császárság fennhatósága és a genovai püspök irányítása alatt, de gyakorlatilag az évente választott konzulok vezették. A kereskedelem, a hajóépítés és a bankok lehetővé tették, hogy a Földközi-tenger térségének egyik legnagyobb flottáját tartsa fenn. A Genovai Köztársaság a mai Liguria és Piemont mellett Szardíniára és Korzikára is kiterjedt.
A városállam fénykorát a 13. században érte el, amikor Pisát és az örök rivális Velencét is legyőzte. Ez azonban nem tartott sokáig: a fekete halált egy Fekete-tenger környéki genovai kereskedőtelepről hurcolták be Európába, és a városban is nagy pusztítást okozott. Genova vereséget szenvedett Velencével szemben; Franciaország, majd a Milánói Hercegség uralma alá került, elvesztette Szardíniát és Korzikát.
A 16. században Genova újra felvirágzott. Ebben az időszakban számos művész élt és alkotott itt, többek között Rubens, Caravaggio és Van Dyck.
1797-ben Napoléon Bonaparte tábornok nyomására francia protektorátussá lett, és 1805-ben Franciaországhoz csatolták. 1814-ben a genovaiak felszabadították magukat, de a bécsi kongresszus döntése értelmében a várost a Szárd–Piemonti Királysághoz csatolták. Innen indult 1860-ban Garibaldi önkénteseivel Itália egyesítésére.
Amikor Genovában jártak, Montesquieu, Dumas és Flaubert is úgy írta le a várost, mint a márvány városát. Valóban, a történelmi belváros - mely Európa legnagyobbika - tele van óriási és dúsan díszített középkori épületekkel, melyeket a város gazdag kereskedőcsaládjai építettek.

Genova lakosainak száma 631.000, ami Olaszország összes lakosságának 1,14%-a. Sok a külföldi bevándorló. A város területe 240 km2 amelyből 75 km2 lakott, a többi ipari terület. Genova területe nagyobb, mint a szomszédos Milánóé, vagy például Barcelona-é, de a rendelkezésre álló természeti erőforrásai és népessége kevesebb. A népsűrűség a városközpontban átlagosan 28 fő/hektár.
Genova az Európai Kultúra Fővárosa volt 2004-ben.
A város főtere a Pizza De Ferrari, a város történelmi központja, mely 2001-ben nagyobb felújításon esett át.
A szabálytalan alakú tér területe 11 000 m² lett a két szomszédos kisebb tér egyesítése révén.
Névadója Piazza De Ferrari, a híres bankár, politikus és mecénás, akinek 1876-ban bekövetkezett halálát követő en 1877-ben elismeréseként kapta a tér a nevét.
1936 óta működik a tér központjában a gyönyörű bronz szökőkút, melynek tervezője Giuseppe di Crosa Vergagni. Ez a látványos kút hamarosan a város jelképévé is vált.
Itt találhatóak a központi bankok, nagyon sok, jelentős irodaház, és más vállalkozások, Genova pénzügyi központja is.
Igaz a 19 század végéig Genova Olaszország pénzügyi központja is volt.
A helyiek egyszerűen, népszerű nevén City Genova-nak nevezik.
Legjelentősebb épületek a téren: a Il palazzo della Nuova Borsa (az Új Stock Market), a Il Teatro Carlo Felice, a Il palazzo dell'Accademia Ligustica e sullo sfondo la torre scenica del Carlo Felice (A Ligur-Akadémia épülete, a háttérben, a légy toronnyal, a Carlo Felice-vel), a Il palazzo della Società Italia di Navigazione oggi sede della Regione Liguria, (a Liguriai régió központja), a Il prospetto laterale del Palazzo Ducale (oldalsó falával a Dózse Palota, és az il palazzo del Credito Italiano(Olasz Kredit Bank), de nem utolsósorban a Garabaldi emlékmű.

Video of our second day on the MSC Meraviglia. We arrived early in the morning in Genova, Italy. After we took breakfast at the buffet 'market place' at the MSC Meraviglia, we started to explore Genova.
We saw the palazzo ducale, piazza raffaele de ferrari, torri di porta soprana, duomo di genova and much more.
In the evening we had dinner at Cirque du Soleil, but the show was cancelled due to bad weather conditions, there was a storm at sea. We ended the day with some dancing classes and a wonderful performance of the MSC animations team (michael jackson, thriller)!

I also made a cruise with the MSC Meraviglia in Northern Europe !

Genova Loves Monuments 2015

Il Comune di Genova aderisce anche nel 2015 a Wiki Loves Monuments, il concorso internazionale di fotografia rivolto a fotografi professionisti, appassionati e semplici dilettanti che vogliono documentare il patrimonio culturale di tutto il pianeta. Tutti sono quindi invitati a partecipare con i loro scatti a una manifestazione che già nel 2013 era entrata nel Guinness dei Primati come la più grande del Mondo del suo genere.
In occasione dell’adesione all’edizione 2015 il Comune di Genova ha deciso di “liberare” altri monumenti che si aggiungono così a quelli oggetto di una medesima delibera dello scorso anno, di cui era già possibile fare e diffondere fotografie. Il Codice Urbani (D.lgs 42/2004) sancisce infatti l'impossibilità di fotografare monumenti e diffonderne le immagini senza una precisa autorizzazione da parte degli Enti territoriali che li hanno in consegna. La delibera del Comune e la lista dei monumenti interessati è dunque elemento indispensabile alla realizzazione del concorso e alla buona riuscita di un’iniziativa che si offre come occasione preziosa di visibilità per il patrimonio culturale e architettonico della nostra città.
Dal Castello D’Albertis alla Fontana di Piazza De Ferrari, dal Monumento a Cristoforo Colombo a quello a Giuseppe Mazzini, dalla Scalinata di Piazza Tommaseo al Monumento ai Mille di Quarto e altri ancora, ben 17 sono le new entries che vanno ad aggiungersi ai monumenti dell’edizione 2014 della manifestazione, che ha visto premiata una foto del Cimitero monumentale di Staglieno scattata durante un mapping party.

Di seguito la lista dei 17 nuovi monumenti “liberati”:

Stanze della Duchessa, l'allure di Parigi a Palazzo Rosso

Un angolo di Parigi a Genova, nell'elegantissima e cinquecentesca Strada Nuova, ora via Garibaldi. E' all'ultimo piano di Palazzo Rosso, dove il museo civico ha aperto nuovi affascinanti spazi espositivi appena restaurati con il contributo della Compagnia di San Paolo. Arredi, quadri, stoffe, ori, volumi preziosi arrivano dagli anni parigini della Duchessa di Galliera che alla fine della sua vita li destinò al Palazzo genovese dei Brignole-Sale dov'era nata. Proprio qui.

Nella stessa sala i ritratti della Duchessa di Galliera, dei suoi genitori Antonio Brignole-Sale e Artemisia Negrone, di sua sorella maggiore Luisa e di suo figlio Filippo. Perché ebbero tutti ruoli determinanti per la donazione di Palazzo Rosso alla città. Ispirata dalle intenzioni del padre Luisa Brignole Sale, infatti, a sua volta con il proprio testamento indusse poi anche la Duchessa di Galliera a donare, insieme al figlio Filippo, il palazzo a Genova nel 1874.

La Duchessa e il marito, il marchese Raffaele De Ferrari, nel 1854 si trasferirono a Parigi, acquistando come propria residenza l'Hotel Matignon, di cui ora a Palazzo Rosso si riflettono, fra dipinti, specchiere, stipi, candelabri e panoplie, lo sfarzo e l'eleganza degli arredi che Maria Brignole-Sale De Ferrari, morta nel 1888, volle lasciare al suo palazzo genovese.

Il figlio Filippo, eccellente studioso, coltivò con convinzione gli ideali socialisti, mentre la Duchessa sua madre fu sempre profondamente conservatrice. Anche per questo, come tutta la grande aristocrazia francese, non ebbe alcun contatto con gli impressionisti e i loro capolavori.

E allora dall'elegante necessaire da viaggio alle vetrine angolari, dal comò ai vasi giapponesi di fine '700 ecco la sontuosa stanza da letto, ricostruita filologicamente sulla base dei documenti e delle fonti disponibili.
