Spanish Steps and Piazza di Spagna, Rome, Italy
The Spanish Steps, named after the Spanish embassy to the Vatican, is a popular hangout for both locals and tourists.
The wide and curving staircase leading up from Piazza di Spagna, 138 steps in all, is an icon of Rome and is busy at all hours of the day and night. The stairs lead up to two Baroque churches along with great views of the piazza below.
This area has been a favorite for Romantics, artists, and writers such as Keats, Wagner, Openshaw, and Goethe to name a few. In 1821, British poet John Keats died of tuberculosis at the age of 25 in the orange house on the right (currently under construction). It was in that same building where he pondered his mortality.
At the foot of the Spanish Steps is the Sinking Boat Fountain also known as Fountain of the Ugly Boat (Fontana della Barcaccia). This early Baroque fountain depicting a half-sunken ship is powered by an aqueduct. It is believed that the fountain was created between 1627 and 1629 by Italian sculptor Pietro Bernini.

Piazza di Spagna, at the bottom of the Spanish Steps, is one of the most famous squares in Rome (Italy). It owes its name to the Palazzo di Spagna, seat of the Embassy of Spain among the Holy See.
In the middle of the square is the famous Fontana della Barcaccia, dating to the beginning of the baroque period, sculpted by Pietro Bernini and his son, the more famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
The Spanish Steps (Italian: Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are a set of steps between the Piazza di Spagna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinità dei Monti church at the top.
The monumental stairway of 135 steps (the slightly elevated drainage system is often mistaken for the first step) was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy, and the Trinità dei Monti church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, both located above — to the Holy See in Palazzo Monaldeschi located below.
