Meadowlark Pioneer Memorial Cemetery-San Marcos Ca
Just like Pioneer Park in Mission Hills, all is not what it appears to be at this busy intersection. If you look closely, you will notice a modest memorial for a group of Spanish-colonial pioneers from Ventura & Ojai, CA. There are 7 people buried here total. Nearby are two white, wooden crosses within a 20X20' enclosure. This area is respectfully closed to the public.
The inhabitants of this cemetery are tied into some fascinating stories with the early history of San Diego. One of the couples lived on a 160-acre homestead near Questhaven Rd. Others were American Indians, one was killed by a relative of Colonel Cave Clouts, another was the descendant of the missionary scout who discovered the mouth of the San Francisco Bay. Taking care of the small cemetery has been an undertaking for the remaining family members for decades now, including fighting the city to help preserve it.
As more houses were built in the area, a need for wider roads became necessary. The city tried to negotiate moving the graves to a more formal cemetery. The Tico family were not having it and demanding their family member's to remain, as well as receive nice memorial. The City of San Marcos eventually widened the street and put a memorial on the side of the road and in the median commemorating those who are buried beneath.

I recorded Forty Blues at the player piano in the Musee Mechanique, pier 45. Information about the Mechanics Monument and Douglas Tilden comes from Historic Walks in San Francisco by Rand Richards and from San Francisco Then And Now by Dennis Evanosky and Eric J. Kos. A few steps to the northwest you'll find a plaque marking the bay shoreline as it was in 1848.

Village People YMCA, Macho Man, San Francisco 1979
Village People enhanced performance of their disco hits Y.M.C.A, Macho Man (3:39), and San Francisco (You've Got Me) (6:58) were live and lip-synced on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in Hollywood, CA on January 6, 1979.
Y.M.C.A. is Village People's biggest hit, reaching #2 on Billboard's Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 1979. Le Freak by Chic prevented YMCA from reaching #1: The audience joins in on the dance with arm movements used to spell out the four letters of the song's title. Y.M.C.A. is #7 on VH1's list of The 100 Greatest Dance Songs of the 20th Century. In 2018, Village People received a star on the legendary Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The 1978 breakthrough hit single Macho Man catapulted the gay disco group into the mainstream. San Francisco (You've Got Me) was released in 1977 as the lead single from their self-titled debut studio album Village People. Macho Man was played at the Trump Rally in Milwaukee, WI on January 14, 2020.
Village People classic line-up is Victor Willis (Cop), Felipe Rose (Indian), Alex Briley (GI), Glenn Hughes (Leather Man), David Hodo (Construction Worker), and Randy Jones (Cowboy).
Henri Belolo is dead and remembered in 2019. “I am devastated by the untimely death of Henri Belolo who was my former producer, mentor, and co-creator of Village People,” lead singer Victor Willis said in a statement.
Billboard.com: Henri Belolo, co-creator of Village People, died on August 3, 2019, as the band's official Facebook page confirmed.
In loving memory of Henri Belolo (1936-2019), they wrote. The cause of death is currently unknown. A private funeral was already held in France, but the band is currently working on a public memorial service, to be announced soon. Belolo was 82 years old.
Scorpio Music, the French record label founded by Belolo, issued the following statement today: “It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Henri Belolo, founder of Scorpio Music and pioneer of dance music. He passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2019. We extend our deepest sympathies to Henri’s family...Henri will live on in our hearts and minds forever.”
The French music producer helped shape disco music, penning hits that were featured in several films, Broadway, commercials, and more. Of course, their monster hits Y.M.C.A., Macho Man and In The Navy are also still played at every wedding, party, and bar and bat mitzvah today.

Sacramento Old City Cemetery - Part 1 Pioneers Of Our Past
Sacramento Old City Cemetery was established in 1849 by John Sutter captain of Sutter's Fort who founded the city and donated 10 acres of land to be used for public burial. Sadly a short time later a major Cholera epidemic outbreak occurred killing about a 1000 emigrants who came to Sacramento as a stage stop before heading up to the sierras in search of gold. During the 1850's many pioneers buried here were victims of fires, flooding and disease, As the years passed the cemetery expanded to over 60 acres containing some of the most beautiful monuments and graves in the state of California as it was Victorian by design. At one time this cemetery had a bell tower and a gate house even. Margaret Crocker in 1880 donated 23 acres of the cemetery who owned an observatory that overlooked this historic graveyard. In the 1800's many victims of the Cholera epidemic were buried in mass graves along with 3000 pioneers, various fraternal groups, mayors, governors and other politicians were served the state of California. Old City Cemetery is divided up into nine smaller cemeteries which includes veterans of the Civil War in the Grand Army Of The Republic, Masons, Spanish American War Soldiers, Pioneers and Fireman who started the first hook and ladder company in the state of California just to name a few. At one time the region was prone to severe flooding so many pioneers camped up the cemeteries hill to escape the rising waters in the 1860's. After the turn of the century the city began to neglect this cemetery many of the graves were exhumed to make room for the growing city streets and other structures. The cemetery for many years was forgotten, desecrated and vandalized. Names such as E.B. Crocker, William Stephen Hamilton, General George Wright, John Sutter, Members of the Donner Party, Mark Hopkins and many more notables were interred here which later led to graveyards historic status in the 1950's. Today the cemetery is not only a designated historical landmark but also a haunted one. Stories about a phantom dog, couple wearing all black, firefighter who greets cemetery visitors, heroic train engineer who saved his passenger and even a little girl who died of Encephalitis are said to haunt this cemeteries graves. We invite you to take a tour of one of the most beautiful pioneer cemeteries on the west coast which is full of nature, flowers, history, lore and beautiful craftsmanship of various monuments of the dearly departed.
