A journey through LA FORESTERIA PLANETA Estate
The La Foresteria resort (four stars hotel) is the hallmark of the hospitality of the Planeta family (planeta.it), the ambassadors of Sicily and of its fine wines and oils throughout the world.
Located on the southwestern coast of Sicily, in Menfi, a town between Selinunte and Agrigento, it bears resemblance with a typical village of rural homes standing on the hill to watch over the surrounding vineyards and olive groves. An enchanting site located just 4 km away from the crystal-clear sea and the beaches of fine sand of Porto Palo, which has attained 16 Blue Flags, an internationally recognized eco-label awarded to seaside resorts that meet criteria on sustainable environmental management.
La Foresteria has 14 spacious rooms, each of which blends together a sense of essentiality and style to offer a vacation truly Mediterranean in spirit in a place of genuine beauty and superb hospitality of the Planeta family.
A stay at La Foresteria means enjoying a special vacation and unique experiences: the cooking course that our chef Angelo Pumilia holds
to teach you the recipes of the Planeta family and the secrets of traditional Sicilian cuisine, from Sicilian-style pasta with sardines to true caponata, from the superb timbale in Ricotta cheese crust to scabbardfish with herbs. Every recipe is made with local ingredients and finely matched with the best Planeta wines. While staying at La Foresteria, you can visit the wine cellar where you can taste wines matched with the dishes of Casa Planeta.
The resort also offers a wide range of services: a restaurant, a marvelous deck level swimming pool, a relaxing Turkish bath, fitness area, bicycles at your disposal for ride to explore the nearby olive groves and vineyards, guided tours to archaeological sites of Selinunte, Agrigento (Valley of Temples), and Segesta.

PLANETA
FOR EACH TERROIR, ITS OWN WINERY
Established in 1995, Planeta is a Sicilian wine producer built on a long agricultural tradition handed down since 1500 through 17 generations in the area between Sambuca di Sicilia and Menfi. Today Planeta represents not just one, but six ways of developing the territory, in six different settings.
There are, in fact, six Planeta wine producing estates, each one with a specific research and development project.
Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Sciara Nuova at Etna in Castiglione di Sicilia, and finally, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. These are the Planeta locations, comprising a total surface area of more than 350 hectares of vineyards.
Through its family properties, Planeta can conduct a virtual journey around Sicily and its greatest wines.
The stages are up-to-date and innovative yet consistent with a historical and ritualistic interpretation that elsewhere has almost been forgotten.
Planeta's project calls for patient and meticulous research, never hurried, and looks just as much to the past as to the future. On the one hand, a deep bond with the oldest wine-making Sicilian tradition, with its heritage of native varieties: Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d'Avola. On the other, the arena in which the greatest producers of the five continents are appraised for Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet: magnificent classics of international enology interpreted by a territory which puts its unmistakable mark on them. It is paramount to remember the most inspired and visionary varietal experimentation: it has resulted in obtaining for the first time in Sicily a Fiano with truly revolutionary features.
And then, that unique green gold, the Planetas' other passion: extra virgin olive oil produced in the natural oasis of Capparrina, near the beaches of Menfi.
The company's activity has one absolutely essential point of reference: environmental sustainability, achieved through landscape conservation, renewable energy, recycled materials and sustainable agriculture, with the utmost respect for the territory, cultural heritage and the communities within which the company operates.
Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta gave life to this project, but behind them they have the whole family, rooted in the reality of Sicilian agriculture for generations, beginning with Diego Planeta, considered the leading figure in the rebirth of the Sicilian wine industry in the last forty years. A brand, a family, that has aimed at ambitious goals, following the lode-star of quality.

Planeta: Ulmo Estate
Planeta is a winery with a rich Sicilian history. The winery has logged 500+ years and has been successfully passed through the hands of 17 generations of the Planeta family, who are a noble Sicilian family. A visit here transports you back in time to the heart of this island’s winemaking history and the family’s vineyards span the growing areas from Sambuca di Sicilia to Menfi, and is home to 350 hectares of vineyards scattered throughout the island of Sicily. Paying a visit to one of the family’s wineries in Ulmo, near Sambuca, is like taking a step back in time and winemaking practices. The winery is on the shores of Lago Arancio, in the heart of the Terre Sicane. The vineyards are home to grapes like Chardonnay, a benchmark varietal for the winery, as well as single-vineyard plantings of Merlot and Syrah. The Planeta family also produces a wide range of wines made from native grapes, such as Grecanico and Nero d’Avola.

Ulmo -- Sambuca di sicilia
Located near Sambuca di Sicilia, a town of Arab origin on the shores of Lake Arancio, the Ulmo estate, inaugurated in 1995, is Planeta's first winery. Surrounded by 93 hectares of vineyards where several grape varieties are grown, it stands in a landscape of matchless beauty, with a wine cellar built just a few meters away from the 16th-century farmhouse -- the Baglio -- which has always been owned by the family.
This estate is home to Chardonnay Planeta, one of the super crus grown by the firm, and to the single-vineyard crus: Merlot Sito dell'Ulmo and Syrah Maroccoli.
Finally, there are the territorial varieties: Alastro and Plumbago, monovarietal Grecanico and Nero d'Avola respectively.
At the Ulmo estate, special attention is devoted to guests and visitors who can take guided tours of the winery, enjoy wine tastings and stroll through the vineyards. The desire to promote the territory has led to the opening of an open-air Iter Vitis Museum, dedicated to the history of Sicilian wine, which includes a teaching field where you can observe all the Sicilian varieties and even some ancient Georgian varieties. Then there is the La Segreta Nature Footpath, which offers a choice of three routes along the vineyards, revealing surprising landscapes and pockets of wilderness.
The Winery Established in 1995, it is the first company's wine cellar.
Architecturally in keeping with the surrounding territory and local traditions, the ground floor houses the fermentation tanks. The underlying barrique cellar, which has about 700 barriques, is where our finest grapes are aged and where we make our Classical Method Brut, our latest challenge.
ULMO The valley, once crossed by a river in ancient times, has now become a lake. This has helped make the estate's soils very deep and pebbly. The upper layers are more calcareous, with portions of dark loam rich in organic matter.
MAROCCOLI The Maroccoli vineyard lies 450 meters above sea level. The soil is on average clayey and rich in silt. It has an extraordinary microclimate thanks to the breeze blowing from the sea, just a few kilometers away.
