Haleakala Maui Run - Sea to Summit to Sea by FOOT -Kaupo Gap to Kihei
I've wanted to get to the top of this huge Maui landmark by foot starting at the ocean every time I've visited this Hawaiian island. Doing a traverse starting at one point and traveling the entire crater then descending down another trail seemed even better. With two running buddies on board to share the experience, David Clancy and Curtis Day, it all came together to make the attempt a reality.
We weren't sure exactly what the distance would be. Nor did we know where precisely the trails went - or how they connected. But we did have an amazing time on the mountain. It is a sublime place to experience in this way.
Maui TRAIL RUN - Lahaina Pali Trail
#running #trailrunning #ultrarunning #maui #paradise #whalewatching
I was lucky to sneak away one morning and attempt the full crossing of the Lahaina Pali trail while staying in Maui!
You start by going up 1,600 feet in 2.5 miles. Drink in an awesome view, and listen to the whirling windmills before descending down the other side to the highway... you then retrace your steps back to the parking lot on the west side of the trail, going up and over the same peak.
This journey totals just over 10 miles with 3,200 feet of gain in total.
From the higher points, you get a sweet view of the ocean below, where kayakers and whales mingle under the rising sun, towering above Mount Haleakala on the east side of the island.
Planes were landing, hikers were hiking and I was happily running through it all when the rocky, steep and technical trail would allow it. Cheers!! ????

Hawaiian mythology comprises the legends, historical tales, and sayings of the ancient Hawaiian people. It is considered a variant of a more general Polynesian mythology, developing its own unique character for several centuries before about 1800. It is associated with the Hawaiian religion. The religion was officially suppressed in the 19th century, but kept alive by some practitioners to the modern day.
Prominent figures and terms include Aumakua, the spirit of an ancestor or family god and Kāne, the highest of the four major Hawaiian deities.
List of Hawaiian state parks
There are many Hawaiian state parks. The main Hawaiʻi (island) has state parks, recreation areas, and historical parks. Kauaʻi has the Ahukini State Recreation Pier, six state parks, and the Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park. Maui has two state monuments, several state parks, and the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area. Moloka'i has the Pala'au State Park. Oʻahu has several state parks, a number of state recreation areas, and a number of monuments, including the Ulu Pō Heiau State Monument.
Literature in Hawaii
The literature in Hawaii is diverse and includes authors such as Kiana Davenport, Lois-Ann Yamanaka, and Kaui Hart Hemmings, author of The Descendants. Hawaiian magazines include Hana Hou!, Hawaii Business Magazine and Honolulu, among others.
Music of Hawaii
The music of Hawaii includes an array of traditional and popular styles, ranging from native Hawaiian folk music to modern rock and hip hop. Hawaii's musical contributions to the music of the United States are out of proportion to the state's small size. Styles like slack-key guitar are well-known worldwide, while Hawaiian-tinged music is a frequent part of Hollywood soundtracks. Hawaii also made a major contribution to country music with the introduction of the steel guitar.

President Donald Trump said on Feb. 12 that if the United States and China are close to a trade deal, he might let the March 1 deadline slide for a little while, to further boost tariffs on Chinese goods, but said he’s not inclined to do that. Trump responded to reporter’s question whether the March 1 deadline will slide, saying: “If we’re close to a deal where we think we can make a real deal and it’s going to get done, I could see myself letting that slide for a little while. But generally speaking, I’m not inclined to do that.” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and trade representative Robert Lighthizer are in Beijing this week in talks to resolve the trade war. Trump said: “And I think we’re gonna have some good answers. I think, either way, I’m happy. I’m happy either way. I could live receiving billions and billions of dollars a month from China. China never gave us 10 cents. It was always the opposite way. Now they’re paying billions of dollars a month for the privilege of coming into the United States and honestly taking advantage of our country. So we’ll see how it works out.” The United States plans to further boost tariffs on $200 billion in goods barring a deal before the March 1 deadline, which marks the end of a 90-day tariffs truce. A Hawaiian Snowstorm Brought Winds, Flood, Snow to the Tropical Paradise Winds reaching speeds of up to 190 mph uprooted trees, leaving them across roadways and power lines. At Kapiolani Park in Honolulu, winds took down kiawe trees believed to be nearly a century old, reported local station KNHL. Snowfall is not unheard of in Hawaii and often blankets the state’s highest mountains. But snow in the Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area on the island of Maui might be a first. Sam Lemmo, Administrator of Hawaii’s Department of Land and Natural Resources, said that “We rarely, if ever, have seen the combination of record high on-shore waves, coupled with gale force winds.” National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Foster told the Star-Advertiser that “the immediate threat from this strong, low-pressure system is about over.” Read Chefs Create King Kong Sculpture Made Entirely Out of Chocolate Chefs Amaury Guichon and Christophe Morel can do some serious “chest-thumping” over their recent creation—a 6-foot tall, edible milk chocolate sculpture recreating the image of “King Kong” atop the Empire State Building. A time-lapse video shows the two with 135 pounds of milk chocolate, using various sculpting tools in almost a building-and-trades fashion to make the superstructure. Then creating the intricate side details with carving tools, before hand-fashioning the angry “Kong” and placing him atop the building, complete with bi-plane in hand. The project took 26 hours to complete. There is no word yet on when and how the marvelous creation was or will be consumed.

SUMMARY
=======
Hawaii ( ( listen) hə-WY-ee; Hawaiian: Hawaiʻi [həˈvɐjʔi]) is the 50th and most recent state to have joined the United States, having received statehood on August 21, 1959. Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania, the only U.S. state located outside North America, and the only one composed entirely of islands. It is the northernmost island group in Polynesia, occupying most of an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean. The state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian archipelago, which comprises hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles (2,400 km). At the southeastern end of the archipelago, the eight main islands are—in order from northwest to southeast: Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and the Island of Hawaiʻi. The last is the largest island in the group; it is often called the Big Island or Hawaiʻi Island to avoid confusion with the state or archipelago. The archipelago is physiographically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania.
Hawaii's diverse natural scenery, warm tropical climate, abundance of public beaches, oceanic surroundings, and active volcanoes make it a popular destination for tourists, surfers, biologists, and volcanologists. Because of its central location in the Pacific and 19th-century labor migration, Hawaii's culture is strongly influenced by North American and East Asian cultures, in addition to its indigenous Hawaiian culture. Hawaii has over a million permanent residents, along with many visitors and U.S. military personnel. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oʻahu.
Hawaii is the 8th-smallest and the 11th-least populous, but the 13th-most densely populated of the 50 U.S. states. It is the only state with an Asian plurality. The state's oceanic coastline is about 750 miles (1,210 km) long, the fourth longest in the U.S. after the coastlines of Alaska, Florida, and California.
