The bridge of San Francesco di Paola in Taranto is the structure that connects the island of Borgo Antico with the peninsula of Borgo Nuovo. Inaugurated on 22 May 1887 by Admiral Ferdinando Acton , the bridge dominates a navigable canal 400 meters long and 73 meters wide, which joins the Mar Grande to the Mar Piccolo.
Built by the Italian industrial construction company ( Castellammare di Stabia ) by Alfredo Cottrau , based on a project by Ing. Giuseppe Messina who directed the construction work, originally consisted of a large six-sided arch in wood and metal, divided into two arms that turned independently from one another around a vertical pin placed on a shoulder. The operation took place thanks to hydraulic turbines powered by a large tank located on the adjacent Aragonese Castle , capable of 600 cubic meters of water that in fall operated the two arms of the bridge.
The structure was subsequently modernized in the years 1957 - 1958 , introducing an electrical operation, but keeping the engineering principles of the then constituting Directorate of military engineering for the Navy unaltered. The project was carried out by the Società Nazionale Officine di Savigliano, for everything concerning the mechanical organs and electrical controls. The new bridge was inaugurated by the President of the Republic Giovanni Gronchi on 10 March 1958 , and was named after San Francesco di Paola , protector of the sea people.
The bridge currently measures 89.9 meters in length and 9.3 meters in width. The revolving bridge is periodically subjected to accurate maintenance interventions, both of the mechanical parts and of the entire metal structure. Each half-bridge that actually constitutes its structure, rotates around a central pivot anchored by means of bolts to the concrete quay, moving over a rack by means of a pinion always in a grip driven by an electric motor. Everything is based on a rolling track consisting of a series of steel cylinders. The opening of the bridge is necessary to allow the passage of large military ships directed to the docks and basins of the Navy Arsenal located in the Mar Piccolo for maintenance work. The procedures for opening and closing the bridge require a total of about twenty minutes, the maneuvers are conducted from the inside of two cockpits located near each half-bridge, while four workers check the correct operation of the automatic devices, ready to intervene in failure of the same.
The first manual operations to be carried out are those of removing the eight coverings and uncoupling the two bolts located at the ends, which have the purpose of making the bridge stable when it is closed. The actual opening begins with the rotation of about 45 ° of the half-bridge on the Borgo Antico side, then with the 90 ° rotation of the Borgo Nuovo half-bridge, followed by the completion of the rotation of the Borgo Antico side.
The revolving bridge is the main symbol of the city of Taranto, and can be considered for its uniqueness a marvelous naval engineering work . Apertura straordinaria del Ponte Girevole nel pomeriggio di lunedì 22 marzo.
Alle 14.45 il ponte che collega il borgo antico di Taranto con la città nuova
si è aperto per consentire il transito in uscita del cacciamine ex nave Squalo
e in entrata della barca a vela Calypso. Numerosi i curiosi che dalla ringhiera
di corso due mari hanno potuto assiste all'apertura del ponte, da sempre uno
dei simboli del capoluogo ionico.

SPETTACOLARE INGRESSO NAVE CAVOUR DAL PONTE GIREVOLE DI TARANTO
Nave Cavour è la terza unità della Marina Militare a fregiarsi del nome dell’illustre statista. La prima è stata una nave da trasporto di 1^ classe costruita a Londra alla fine del 1800, mentre la seconda è stata la nave da battaglia Conte di Cavour che, con la gemella Giulio Cesare, prese parte al secondo conflitto mondiale ed operò fino alla metà del 1950.
Nave Cavour (CVH 550) è una portaerei STOVL (Short Take Off and Vertical Landing) italiana, costruita da Fincantieri, ed entrata in servizio per la Marina Militare italiana nel 2009.
E’ la Nave sede dell’Insegna del Comandante in Capo della Squadra Navale (CINCNAV) da cui dipende organicamente: è pertanto la Nave Ammiraglia della Marina Militare ed il suo Comandante prende l’appellativo di “Comandante di Bandiera”.
La Portaerei Cavour prende vita da un progetto degli anni 90, sancito tramite un contratto tra la Direzione Generale degli Armamenti Navali (NAVARM) e la Fincantieri, firmato nel novembre del 2000, nato per dotare la Marina Militare di una vera e propria Portaerei.
Il Cavour, un progetto interamente italiano, rappresenta l’investimento tecnologico più importante del sistema industria difesa nazionale; la Nave è stata impostata nel cantiere di Riva Trigoso (GE) il 17 luglio del 2001. Per le sue dimensioni, è stata realizzata in due distinti tronconi: il varo, della sola parte poppiera, è avvenuto il 20 luglio del 2004 nel cantiere navale genovese alla presenza del Presidente della Repubblica Carlo Azeglio Ciampi; successivamente, lo scafo varato è stato trasferito a Muggiano (SP) per essere unito alla parte prodiera. Il 15 settembre 2004, con il congiungimento della prora è terminata la prima fase di impostazione della nuova ammiraglia della Marina Militare.
Le prove in mare sono iniziate il 18 dicembre 2006, mentre la consegna alla Marina Militare è avvenuta il 27 marzo 2008.
Ha ricevuto, alla presenza del Presidente della Repubblica e delle più alte cariche militari e civili dello stato, la Bandiera di Combattimento il 10 giugno 2009.
La costruzione di Nave Cavour ha tenuto conto della necessità dell’impiego “dual use”. Da un lato l’Unità riveste un ruolo centrale nelle missioni di proiezione, sul mare e dal mare, nei vari contesti organizzativi, tanto a carattere interforze che multinazionale. La Nave risponde all’interesse di disporre di uno strumento navale con elevate capacità di Comando e Controllo, da impiegare quale strumento operativo per la gestione di qualsiasi tipo di operazione necessaria per la sicurezza globale e la tutela degli interessi del Paese nel mondo.
Dall’altro la capacità di portare, con tempestività e grande autonomia logistica, un potenziale di intervento in zone in cui si sia verificato un disastro ambientale o in aree in cui si richiede un soccorso umanitario, con una spinta versatilità e flessibilità. In tale contesto si inquadra la missione umanitaria White Crane a favore alla popolazione di Haiti a seguito del rovinoso terremoto del gennaio 2010. L’intervento ha fornito un eloquente esempio delle potenzialità del Cavour: con la moderna area ospedaliera e le elevate caratteristiche di autonomia logistica, mobilità e flessibilità, sono stati raggiunti risultati importanti in termini di assistenza e benefici per la popolazione haitiana.
Considerando le caratteristiche descritte si può considerare Nave Cavour come 4 navi in una: è infatti in grado di assolvere totalmente i ruoli di portaerei, piattaforma logistica ed anfibia, unità sede di comando e nave ospedale.
PORTAEREI
La Marina Militare italiana è stata una delle prime al mondo a comprendere l’importanza dell’impiego degli aeromobili sul mare e dal mare. È infatti già negli anni 50 che, prima in Europa, ha imbarcato sulle proprie unità gli elicotteri per la caccia antisommergibili. L’evoluzione di questo importante concetto operativo porterà poi allo sviluppo di unità portaeromobili come il Garibaldi ed infine ad unità portaerei come il Cavour.
Il Cavour ha un ponte di volo lungo 234 metri, dotato di 6 punti di decollo ed appontaggio per aerei ed elicotteri, 2 aree di parcheggio aeromobili e due elevatori da 30 tonnellate che collegano il ponte di volo con l’hangar.
Può imbarcare un gruppo di volo misto, aerei ed elicotteri, composto da circa 20 aeromobili. Gli aerei impiegati sul Cavour sono gli AV8B, a decollo corto ed atterraggio verticale, con compiti di protezione aerea della flotta e supporto ravvicinato alle operazioni anfibie e terrestri. Gli elicotteri sono tutti quelli in linea attualmente in Marina ed in particolare i nuovi EH101 ed NH90.
L’hangar, necessario per il ricovero e la manutenzione in navigazione degli elicotteri e degli aerei, è lungo 134 mt e largo 21, con la capacità di ospitare fino ad 11 aeromobili.

Taranto is a coastal city in Apulia, Southern Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Taranto and is an important commercial port as well as the main Italian naval base. Taranto is an important commercial and military port. It has well-developed steel and iron foundries, oil refineries, chemical works, some shipyards for building warships, and food-processing factories. In ancient times around 500 BC the city was one of the largest in the world with population estimates up to 300,000 people.
The Old Town or Città Vecchia is where the Greeks built their acropolis. To date it has the same lay out as it did in 967, when the Byzantines under Nicephorus Phocas rebuilt what the Saracen troops led by the Slavic Sabir had razed to the ground in 927 AD. There are four main arteries (Corso Vittorio II, Via Duomo, Via di Mezzo and Via Garibaldi) which run in a straight direction however the side streets were purposely built narrow and winding to impede the passage of an invading army.
Incorporating the Aragon Castle, Doric Columns and Piazza Fontana, it is situated and entirely enclosed on the artificial island between the Big and Little Seas and is reached from the New Town by crossing the Ponte Girevole from the south and the Ponte di Porta Napoli from the north. Almost rectangular in shape, it is divided into four ''pittaggi'' ( quarters) that are delineated by the cross formed between Via di Mezzo and postiliera Via Nuova. These are Baglio and San Pietro in the upper section which face the Big Sea; and Turipenne and Ponte in the lower part fronting the Little Sea.
The nobility, clergy and military personnel made their homes in Baglio and San Pietro, whilst the artisans and fishermen dwelled in Ponte and Turipenne. An Armenian community was present in the 10th and 11th centuries having arrived in Taranto as troops in the Byzantine Army. The San't Andrea degli Armeni church in Piazza Monteoliveto, located in the Baglio quarter, stands as testimony to the neighbourhood where the Armenians made their homes.
There are a number of 17th and 18th-century palazzi in Old Town. For years, they served as the main residence of local aristocratic families and the clergy. These include Palazzo Calò, Palazzo Carducci-Artenisio (1650), Palazzo Galeota (1728), Palazzo Gallo (17th century), Palazzo Latagliata, Palazzo Lo Jucco (1793) and Palazzo Pantaleo. The 17th century de Beaumont-Bonelli-Bellacicco palace houses the Spartan Museum of Taranto - Hypogeum Bellacicco which extends below street and sea level to the hypogeum that is a crossroads with other hypogeum of Old Town which together form the system of subterranean Taranto.
Churches include the San Cataldo Cathedral (10th century) in Piazza Duomo, San Domenico Maggiore (1302), Sant'Andrea degli Armeni (16th century), San Agostino (1402), San Michele (1763), the Madonna della Salute sanctuary (1752), and San Giuseppe (16th century). Close to the San Agostino church, located near Pendio La Riccia, the buried remains of an ancient Greek temple were discovered.
Beginning in 1934 Benito Mussolini embarked on a project of rejuvenation that involved the demolition of the working class Turipenne pittaggio along the Via Garibaldi and ''Discesa Vasto'' which contained the homes of local fishermen as well as the old Jewish quarter. The demolitions, which also razed the old medieval wall and three churches out of the four within the area, continued until the outbreak of World War II. Modern edifices and apartment blocks were erected to replace the demolished structures.
In addition to the many palazzi, Old Town has myriad arched alleyways, saliti, vicoli and small streets, some of which are closed to traffic. Between 2013 and 2014 two Neapolitan urban artists Cyop and Kaf embarked on a project to decorate derelict buildings, walls and doors in the piazzi and vicoli with 120 representations of street art. It has since become a striking feature of Old Town which is described as the abandoned district of Taranto.

© CLAUDIO MORTINI* Popolata da quasi 200 mila abitanti, capoluogo dell'omonima provincia della Puglia, Taranto è una creatura mutevole, vivace e gentile allo stesso tempo, carica di storia e proiettata verso un futuro fiorente.
Oggi si tratta del secondo centro più popoloso della regione, nonché terzo dell'Italia meridionale peninsulare, ma ancor prima dei nostri giorni la città ha conosciuto popoli innumerevoli: il suolo di Taranto è stato solcato da piedi valorosi, il suo territorio è stato desiderato da uomini potenti di ogni tempo, e il tessuto urbano porta le cicatrici dei tempi più duri ma anche i gioielli dei giorni più ricchi. Incastonata lungo l'omonimo golfo che si affaccia sullo Ionio, la città è lambita dal Mar Grande e dal Mar Piccolo, e si estende a un'altitudine media di 15 metri s.l.m.: a sancire lo sposalizio tra terra e mare è anche la forma particolare dell'area, che si divide in ben tre penisole naturali e un'isola artificiale. Il Mar Grande è quello che costeggia il litorale esterno, mentre il Mar Piccolo è considerato il vasto bacino interno. Tra i monumenti più significativi c'è il Ponte Girevole, o Ponte di San Francesco di Paola, che collega l'isola artificiale del Borgo Antico con la penisola del Borgo Nuovo: aperto nel 1887 ad opera dell'Ammiraglio Ferdinando Acton, il passaggio consente di scavalcare un canale navigabile lungo 400 metri, che unisce i due mari della città. la costruzione più imponente di Taranto è indubbiamente il Castello Aragonese, o Castel Sant'Angelo, con una massiccia pianta quadrangolare che occupa l'angolo estremo dell'isola del Borgo Antico. La parte più datata risale al lontano 916, fondata dai Bizantini con lo scopo di proteggere l'abitato dagli attacchi pirateschi e della Repubblica Veneziana.
