Places to see in ( Turin - Italy ) Porta Palatina
The Palatine Gate is a Roman Age city gate located in Turin, Italy. The gate provided access through the city walls of Julia Augusta Taurinorum from the North side and, as a result, it constituted the Porta Principalis Dextra of the old town.
The Palatine Gate represents the primary archaeological evidence of the city's Roman phase, and is one of the best preserved 1st-century BC Roman gateways in the world. Together with the ancient theatre's remains, located a short distance away, it is part of the so-called Archaeological Park, opened in 2006.
The name Porta Palatina literally refers to a palazzo (palace) placed near the gate, but it is not clear what palace is here referred to. The most trusted theory suggests that it might be either the former Casa del Senato (House of the Senate), a medieval palace located very close to the Palatine Gate, inside the city walls, or perhaps the Palazzo di Città (City Palace), the city hall of Turin placed not far from the gate as well (though a little farther than the old House of the Senate).
A second theory hints to the presence of an alleged adjacent amphitheatre built near present-day Borgo Dora, a historical neighbourhood developing right outside the old city walls (north of the Porta Palatina). This facility might rapidly have fallen into disrepair and, as a result, it might simply have been dubbed palazzo by the ancients.
Over the centuries, however, the Palatine Gate was also known by some other names, such as Porta Comitale (Count's Gate, allegedly referring to a count's residence), Porta Doranea or Porta Doranica (since it led to the Dora river) and later as Porta Palazzo (a clear synonym of Porta Palatina).
The Porta Principalis Dextra served as an access to the cardo maximus, currently identified in Via Porta Palatina and Via San Tommaso. Its impressive remains are currently visible at the center of an open area, today's Piazza Cesare Augusto.
Quite similar to the ancient Porta Decumana, built into the medieval structure of the present-day Palazzo Madama, the Palatine Gate represents an example of a typical Roman gate facing a cavaedium (quadrangular courtyard on the inside of the city walls), the remains of which are placed in front of the gate.

Torino Porta Palatina e Parco Archeologico

Take a tour of Palatine Towers in Turin, Italy -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Turin, Italy is home to some remarkable sites remaining from the ancient Roman Empire.
Among these is the Palatine Towers, a structure which, for the most part, has stood for more than six hundred years.
Once, this was one of four colossal gates in the Roman city's defensive wall.
The two flanking towers were not part of the original wall, but were later additions.
The Palatine Towers is part of a park in Turin, which holds ruins of the original wall.
Replicas of Roman statues were placed in front of the gate, completing the ancient Roman experience.
Though the structure bears the marks of age, it is still accessible to visitors.

TORINO ( Italy ) - PARCO STORICO ARCHEOLOGICO DI TORRE PALATINA-The Archaeological Historical Park -

Porta Palazzo ( Pòrta Pila in the Piedmontese language ), is the area to the north-west of the historic center of Turin , which borders the neighborhoods Centro - zona del Quadrilatero Romano in the south, and Aurora area Borgo Dora - Balon in the north.
Its fulcrum is the octagonal Piazza della Repubblica which, with its 51,300 m² , is the largest square in the city , which daily hosts the largest open air market in Europe
The name derives from the ancient Roman gate of north-west-north access to the city, Porta Principalis dextera , later called Palatina or Comitale , or also Porta Doranea , in the context of the original fenced Roman castrum ( Quadrilatero Romano ) by Julia Augusta Taurinorum in about 28 AD, and from which one reached the Cardo maximo (the current Via Porta Palatina).
Northern boundary area of the ancient castrum (the remains of the Roman Theater were also found ), the southern part was always well connected to the city center , developing mainly around the current Duomo di Piazzetta San Giovanni , first Lombard church , then completely rebuilt in Renaissance period , and from the western side of the Palazzo Reale (from 1940 the seat of the Museum of Antiquities of Turin). From the south-western part, on the other hand, you can access the area called Quadrilatero Romano .
The north side of Piazza della Repubblica, on the other hand, is mainly occupied by the Borgo Dora district , located in the Aurora district and bordered by the great Corso Regina Margherita which - in fact - cuts the large square from east to west. In ancient times, this avenue was simply called Strada di Circonvallazione; on the corner with the ancient alley San Giobbe (the current Corso XI Febbraio), there were water springs, considered miraculous and attributed to the Roman goddess Minerva , then subsequently [ without source ] dedicated to Santa Barbara and San Massimo , and therefore the great course was calledViale di San Massimo and Santa Barbara for many years, only to be named after the Savoy Queen only in 1926 . In the corner building at the aforementioned alley San Giobbe was built, in 1882 , the barracks of the Fire Brigade , left in abandonment after the second post-war period .
The road to the north of the Piazza opens up instead at the beginning of Corso Giulio Cesare - Borgo Dora -one of Balon , where the ancient Torino Porta Milano station was located , already terminus of the Cirié-Lanzo railway , then the Church of San Gioacchino and theMoscow bridge on the Dora Riparia .
