Montpellier‘s Arc de Triomphe – otherwise known as Porte du Peyrou – is the city’s most famous landmark. Here is a brief history of Paris’ southern triumphal arch cousin. The Porte du Peyrou is a triumphal arch in Montpellier, in southern France. It is situated at the eastern end of the Jardin de Peyrou, a park near the center of the city.
The arch was designed by François Dorbay, after the model of the Porte Saint-Denis in Paris. Its construction was completed in 1693. Its rusticated surface is crowned by a Doric entablature, suitable to a martial monument. Its later panels in bas-relief and inscriptions glorifying King Louis XIV of France were added in 1715.
These reliefs show four major events from the reign of Louis XIV, rendered as allegories:
the capture of Namur during the War of the Grand Alliance, in which the figure representing the Dutch Republic kneels before Louis XIV
Louis in the figure of Hercules being crowned by Victory
the digging of the Canal du Midi that links the Bay of Biscay with the Mediterranean Sea
the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.

For anyone wanting to know what the Porte du Peyrou arch of triumph in Montpellier, France looks like in HD video as opposed to just a picture, this short video shows it. This arch was built in the 1690's to honor the Sun King, Louis XIV and depicts in the 4 inlays, 4 significant events during his reign (which are well described in Wikipedia among other places. One of the 4 is the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes which had granted religious tolerance and freedom from persecution of France's protestant population, the Huguenots. The revocation ended up causing many of these industrious folk to leave France and in my view, is not anything to be proud of at all. I am seeing it as part of the Viking Cruises walking tour of Montpellier during the optional tour Montpellier and Chateau Flaugerges on November 27, 2018.

Montpellier is a city in southern France, 10km inland from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The town's stately Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Montpellier, distinguished by conical towers, dates to 1364. The city's Antigone district is a chic, modern development inspired by neoclassical motifs. Paintings from French and European Old Masters hang at the Musée Fabre.
Montpellier is the capital of the Hérault department. Montpellier is the 8th largest city of France, and is also the fastest growing city in the country over the past 25 years. Nearly one third of the population is students from 3 universities and 3 higher education institutions that are outside the university framework in the city.Located on the south coast of France on the Mediterranean Sea, it is the third-largest French city on the Mediterranean coast after Marseille and Nice.
Montpellier is one of the few large cities in France without any Roman heritage and also one of the few cities in southern France without a Greek foundation. During the 19th century the city developed into an industrial centre. In the 1960s, its population grew dramatically after French settlers in Algeria were resettled in the city following Algeria's independence from France. In the 1980s and 1990s, the city drew attention with a number of major redevelopment projects, such as the Corum and especially the Antigone District.
The city is situated on hilly ground 10 km (6 mi) inland from the Mediterranean coast on the River Lez. The name of the city, which was originally Monspessulanus, is said to have stood for mont pelé (the naked hill, because the vegetation was poor), or le mont de la colline (the mount of the hill) Montpellier is located 170 km (106 mi) from Marseille, 242 km (150 mi) from Toulouse. It is at a distance of 748 km (465 mi) from the capital of France, Paris. Montpellier's highest point is the Place du Peyrou, at an altitude of 57 m (187 ft). The city is built on two hills, Montpellier and Montpelliéret, thus some of its streets have great differences of altitude. Some of its streets are also very narrow and old, which gives it a more intimate feel.

The main focus point of the city is the Place de la Comédie, with the Opera Comédie built in 1888.

In the historic centre, a significant number of hôtels particuliers can be found. The majority of the buildings of the historic centre of Montpellier (called the Écusson because its shape is roughly that of an escutcheon) have medieval roots and were modified between the 16th and the 18th centuries. Some buildings, along Rue Foch and the Place de la Comédie, were built in the 19th century.
The Rue du Bras de Fer (Iron Arm Street) is very typical of the medieval Montpellier.
The mikve, ritual Jewish bath, dates back to the 12th century and is one of very few in Europe.
